CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS., Barker, Ralph.
6 Barker, Ralph. CHILDREN OF THE BENARES: A WAR CRIME AND ITS VICTIMS.
Methuen, London, 1987, first edition.
172 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0413423107 B&w photographs. "When the passenger liner 'City of Benares' sailed from Liverpool on Friday, 13 September 1940 she was carrying 90 evacuee children from the bombed cities of Brit ain, bound under a government-sponsored scheme for a safe haven in Canada. Her sinking by U-boat four days later, without warning, in total disregard of the plight of survivors and in defiance of international law, shocked and horrified the c i v i l i s ed world. Of 406 people on board 256 were lost - including, at first count, 83 of the evacuee children. In Britain and the Commonwealth the reaction was one of righteous indignation, accompanied by an intense desire for retribution. N or w as t he propaganda value neglected, a broadcast by King George VI the day after the news broke being clearly directed at neutral America. 'The world,' he said, 'could have no clearer proof of the wickedness against which we fight than th is fou l d eed '. Su s picions subsequently arose, however, that the British authorities had quite as much to answer for as the Nazis. Parents who, despite many misgivings, had entrusted their children to the scheme when invasion threatened, began to ask que stio ns when t hey learned that the promised naval escort had abandoned the convoy twenty-one hours before the 'Benares' was sunk. Allegations that crew members rushed the boats, that emergency equipment had failed, and that the whol e vo yage had b een u nde rtake n u nder the blight of racial prejudice, demanded a formal investigation. But somehow this was avoided, and the scandal was successfully hushed up. Ralph Barker, after a vivid and poignant reconstruction of the disa ster, turn s his attent ion to wha t re ally happened behind the scenes at the Admiralty and the Ministry of Shipping. The result is a harrowing story of human fallibility and human survival." Light to moderate browning to pages and edges of text block , mino r wrin kling a t to p/botto m of spine. Dust jacket has two areas of light edge wrinkling, Very Good-/Very Good

IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
8 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. 264 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0333216148 Includes "a glossary of Naval lower-deck terminology and technical terms" and "a brief account of the fortunes of convoy PQ17". "The year is 1942. A small group of merchant ships escorted by two old destroyers, a corvette and two trawlers are ploughing through Arctic seas to northern Russia in the wake of the ill-fated convoy PQ17. For Ordinary Signalman Ludd - inevitably dubbed 'Lobby' - it is his first trip and li k e l y t o be a tough one. The convoy must run the gauntlet of U-boats, aircraft - there is even the threat that enemy battleships will put to sea; finally there is the other enemy - the bitterest weather, the cruelest seas in the world...Seen f ro m th e p er sp ectives of both wardroom and lower deck, (although a work of fiction, this book) gives an entirely authentic account of the experience of sailors on Arctic convoys during World War II. From the final shore leave in Liverpool to th e a rr iva l at an in hospitable Russian port, through tragedy and much suffering, the men in the cramped messdecks maintain their unflagging humour to the end. Old sailors will relive every minute of these days, and in the characters recognise t hems elv es 3 5 yea rs a go; others will be gripped by a compelling story." 310 pp, 8vo (8 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "With the call to action stations of August 1914, the Royal Navy faced its greatest test since the time of Nelson. Geoffrey Bennett's classic history of the Great War at sea combines graphic and stirring accounts of all the principal naval engagements - battles overseas, in home waters and, for the first time, under the sea - with analysis of the strategy and tactics of both sides. He brings these sea battles dramatically to life, and confirms the Allied navies' vital contribution to victory. In his words, 'Though the titantic struggle on the Western Front dominated the strategy of the Allies, it was their Navies, of which the British was immeasurably the strongest, that in the end brought Germany to her knees.' Illustrated with maps, plans and contemporary photographs, this detailed, immaculately researched account is the authoritative history of an often overlooked but hugely important aspect of the First World War." THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
16 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
17 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

Originally published under the title: "L'Enfant et la Riviere". "This is the story of Pascalet and the river that at first filled him with fear and curiosity and later, when he knew it better, became his friend. It ran beyond the flat French fields that surrounded his home, and though he was forbidden to go to the river, once or twice every year the river came to him. It came when the flood waters ran swiftly over the low fields almost to Pascalet's door; but it came more urgently and mysteriously in the shape of Bargabot, the poacher, whose tempting talk of the joys that awaited those who ventured down to the water's edge filled Pascalet with a longing to escape from the monotony of his quiet home and seek for himself the magic beyond the fields. One fine spring day Pascalet's chance came to explore the river. He found there all the dangers his parents had warned him against, and many beautiful things beside, but chief among all he found Gatzo - a boy of his own age - and together they launched a boat and floated away into a world of enchantment: Pascalet dreaming and fearful, Gatzo sharp and practical and brave."
