WORLD WAR II IN PHOTOGRAPHS., Boyle, David.
1 Boyle, David. WORLD WAR II IN PHOTOGRAPHS.
Rebo, Lisse, Netherlands, 1998.
600 pp, 4to (11 15/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1840530898 "World War II was the most intensively photographed conflict in history. Military and press photographers, propagandists, camera-wielding soldiers and civilians - all took the opportunity to record the tumultuous events of 1939-45. The scenes they captured of mass suffering and individual heroism, of atrocious cruelty and humanitarianism against the odds, of hate and comradeship, misery and hope, remain undiminished in t heir intensity and constitute a vital record of an extraordinary period. (This book) features 900 clearly captioned images selected from a wide variety of sources. Every major theatre of conflict is covered, from the icy seas of the Arctic C i r c l e to the jungles of the South Pacific, from the deserts of North Africa to the steppes of Russia. Throughout, proper historical grounding is given by an informative, indexed commentary summarizing the many complex events of the period. Wi th i ts w ea l th of memorable images, this book provides an unrivalled overview of a time when three-quarters of the globe went to war." Slight wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; tiny bump at top edge, near spine, of a few pages. Dust jacket has li ght ed ge wri nk ling/creasing. Very Good+/Very Good

2 Brayley, Martin. Series editor, Martin Windrow. THE BRITISH ARMY 1939-45 (1) NORTH-WEST EUROPE. OSPREY MEN-AT-ARMS SERIES 354. (I)
Oxford Osprey 2001 1841760528 / 9781841760520 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good Colour Plates By Mike Chappell.
48 pp, 9 3/4" H. B&w photographs, drawings, diagrams, map. 8 pages of colour uniform studies. "The Second World War was Britain's last as a world power; it was a citizen's war, in which most British men and women were mobilised. For a year it saw Britain standing alone aginst the fascist dictatorships; and winning it cost the sacrifice of the entire national wealth. This first title of three describes and explains the uniforms developed for European service. It traces the appearance of the 'Tommy' from pre-war mobilisation, through the years of defeat and endurance, to the final return to Europe on D-Day and the long fighting advance to northern Germany by the spring of 1945. Uniform information is supported by a campaign summary, infantry organisation tables, lists of arms and services, and basic specifications of a number of heavy weapons." Interior - small ghost sticker mark at top inside corner of front cover, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - crease down front cover near spine.

4 Deighton, Len. Introduction by A.J.P. Taylor. FIGHTER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN.

261 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0785812083 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, maps/battle plans, cartoons, drawings. "Drawing on the mastery of technical detail he displayed so brilliantly in 'Bomber' (the s tory of an RAF bombing raid), (Deighton) gives us an altogether factual and comprehensive picture of the men, the machines, the strategies (and the blunders), and the events on both sides. He shows us the British squandering precious fighter pl a n e s in a futile effort to halt the German blitzkrieg in France, and the Germans refusing to believe in the effectiveness of British radar. He compares the fire power, combat tactics, and ground control, analyzing the performance of both the pl an es ( th e Messerschmitt broke up in mid-air more often than the Spitfire) and the pilots (men such as the fabled Douglas Bader, who flew better with two artificial legs than other men with two real ones; or 'Onkel Theo' Osterkamp, a WWI German a ce who be cam e an ace in WWII as well, until he was finally ordered off combat flying at the age of forty-eight). We see the British General Staff divided against itself (after the Battle, the man most responsible for the British victory - Sir Hu gh Dowd ing , C om mander in Chief, Fighter Command - was dismissed); the German High Command, unsure of its objectives; exaggerated British claims (and an almost fatal shortage of pilots); and German technical superiority that was continually und erc ut by Nazi in c ompetence." PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT., Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray.
9 Harclerode, Peter. Foreword by Lieutenant General Sir Michael Gray. PARA! FIFTY YEARS OF THE PARACHUTE REGIMENT.
Brockhampton, London, 1999.
415 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1860199127 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The catalyst for the formation of British airborne forces came with the spectacular display of the capabilities of airborne assault by the German forces in the blitzkrieg against the west in 1940. Impressed by the daring and courage of the fallschirmjager, Churchill sought to create a similar arm for the British Army. Initially airborne operations were carried out by volunteers from all regiments and corps. While Britain was on the defensive, the newly formed parachute units took part in two airborne raids, carrying the war to the enemy in Italy and France. Of these, the most famous is the raid on Bruneval in 1942, duri ng which German rad ar technology was captured. By the time the Allies were ready to invade 'Fortress Europe' in 1944, The Parachute Regiment, which had been formed in 1942, comprised a large number of well equipped and highly trained battali o n s . Those of the 6th Air borne Division were given the task of holding the vital left flank of the Normandy invasion beaches to block German reinforcements and ensure swift Allied breakout over the strategically vital bridges. The Regiment's m os t fa mo u s hour was again an e xcellent example of the nature of the warfare it had been conceived to conduct: the ill-fated combined airborne/ground assault in Holland in September 1944 depended entirely on a surprise airborne assault to open a c or rid or in t o Germany along which the British Second Army was to pour into the heart of Hitler's Reich. Although the plan failed, it firmly established The Parachute Regiment as an elite force: tough, well-trained and capable of undertaking haza rdo us o per ati on s deep in enemy territ ory. This tradition is no less true now, fifty years on, with the post-war period having seen many further stirring examples of the Regiment's skill and valour throughout the world: from Suez and the jungl es o f Mal aya to t he mountains of the Radfan , the Falkland Islands and duties in Northern Ireland." DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH., Harman, Nicholas.
10 Harman, Nicholas. DUNKIRK: THE NECESSARY MYTH.
Hodder and Stoughton, London, 1980.
271 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 034024299X B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(The author), in this long, close and hard look at one of the events which shaped the course of the war, cogently argues that if the ful l truth had been known at the time, the nation's exultation at its deliverance would have been greatly dimmed; and that the Dunkirk spirit, which helped to sustain the British people through five more hard years of war was to a considerable e x t e n t b ased on myth; necessary myth, which was eagerly embraced by a nation under the spell of Churchill's oratory. For while the soldiers, or most of them, displayed fortitude, there was deception and trickery, conflict and contradictory ord er s at t he po litical and high command level. It can be argued that in war it is sometimes necessary to deceive allies as well as enemies. The reader will be able to judge for himself the morality of actions taken by desperate men as catastrop he lo ome d e ver nea rer. Nicholas Harman scrutinises the Dunkirk affair at all its levels. He sees it through the eyes of Cabinet ministers and military commanders; from the naval angle and from the viewpoint of those who manned the 'little shi ps' ; a nd h e ha s re s earc hed a wealth of revealing anecdote about the confused, exhausted soldiers who made the long retreat to the port, and who, on arrival in Britain, were welcomed as if they had been conquerors." Barnes & Noble, New York, 1995.
238 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1566197503 B&w illustrations. "(T)races the background and influences that shaped the character of the German soldier from the time of Frederick the Great to the end of the Second World War. ...Laffin provides an illuminating account of the attitude of the individual soldier to the increasing militarism of the years before the First World War. Included here are extracts from letters written by young German soldiers who, in spite o f t h e mud and carnage, regarded the war as a sacred mission that would bring honor and glory to their country. After Germany's defeat the Treaty of Versailles came as a blow to German pride and helped pave the way to the Second World War. P s yc ho l og y no w played a role in the German soldier's training, and emphasis was given to individual initiative - a concept wholly contrary to the old training that required strict obedience. But such preparation was no match for the Russian wi nt er of 19 42, a nd John Laffin's graphic account of that ill-fated campaign, culminating in the defeat at Stalingrad, pays tribute to German tenacity and resourcefulness." Osprey, Oxford, 2000.
96 pp, 9 3/4" H, soft cover. ISBN 1841762806 Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, colour maps/battle plans, plates. "The first battle of the desert war, Operation Compass was originally envisaged as a spoiling attack, combined with a recon naissance in force to disrupt Italian forces that had advanced into Egypt in September 1940. Lt Gen. Richard O'Connor launched what amounted to a British 'Blitzkrieg'. In less than two months the British forces swept 500 miles along the coa s t o f N orth Africa. 7th Armoured Division raced across the desert to cut off the retreating Italians, and O'Connor's men destroyed nine Italian divisions, and took 130,000 prisoners. This title guides the reader in full detail through the sta ge s o f th e r apid advance, and the hard fighting in an unforgiving environment, as well as examining the consequences of the clash. 16 Lucas, James. BATTLE GROUP! GERMAN KAMPFGRUPPEN ACTION OF WORLD WAR TWO.
Rigel, London, 2004, reprint.
192 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1898800081 B&w photographs, maps. "The German army in the Second World War sought to fight and win swift, decisive victories in a succession of short campaigns - blitzkrieg, or lightning war . Flexibility was as essential as the will to win. Battle groups - or shock troops - were created from miscellaneous, and often disparate, military units to undertake a specific local operation; it was the army's skill in combining superior n u m b e r s, aggressive tactics and the battle group commander's ability to exploit the changing situation on the ground which brought success on every battlefield. The actions described here by James Lucas, the military historian known for his c lo se s tu di es of the German soldier, cover all theatres of the war, and include battle groups large and small, deployed usually to smash a breach in the enemy line or seal off an enemy penentration. Many of the accounts demonstrate the autonom y g ive n t o a co mma nder of relatively low rank and the use he made of his powers. The battle groups' contribution to Wehrmacht fortunes offers powerful lessons in the tactics of battle management." Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/ bott om o f sp ine and flap -folds. Ian Allan, London, 1991, 2nd edition.
294 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0711019118 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The term Blitzkrieg, or lightning war, was coined by the Germans, but has been part of the English language for the past 50 years. It r eflects the aim of armies throughout history to achieve quick and decisive victory. As this book describes, Blitzkrieg originated in the deadlock of trench warfare on the Western Front 1915-17 and the efforts by both sides to break it. T h e i n t e r n a l combustion engine, both in the air and on the ground, provided the means and fast moving mechanised forces closely supported by air power were the result. Theory and experimentation in the 1920s and 1930s gave way to the Blitzk ri eg ca mp ai gn s of 1 939-42, which left Germany master of Continental Europe and much of western Russia. The Allies eventually found the antidote and applied the concept themselves during the latter part of the war. Since then Blitzkrieg has be en a t t he for efr on t o f I sraeli strategy and dominated both Soviet and Western military thought on conventional operations during the Cold War years. Today it provides the background to conventional arms control....This new edition has be en s ign if ican tly exp ande d a nd b roug ht up to date in order to provide an even more comprehensive account of this phenomenon of 20th century warfare." 804 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w photographs, map. "Bomber Command's campaign started on the very first day of the Second World War and ended within a few hours of the final victory in Europe five and a half years later. It was an attempt to win a war in Europe by strategic bombing on such an enormous scale that historians are only now beginning to piece together the finer details of the individual raids. There have been many books about Bomber Command, but Martin Middlebrook, the aviation historian, and his research colleague Chris Everitt are the first to compile the full story of this fascinating campaign in reference form. They undertook the gargantuan task not only of documenting every Bomber Command operation but also of obtaining information from local archives in Germany, Italy and the occupied countries on the effects of the raids. Little of this material has been published previously, and never before have the two sides of Bomber Command's war been brought together in this way.
