THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR., Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake.
10 Bishop, James. Foreword by Lord Blake. THE ILLUSTRATED LONDON NEWS SOCIAL HISTORY OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Angus & Robertson 1982 0207148260 / 9780207148262 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
144 pp, 10 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated with b&w reproductions of photographs, drawings, advertisements. "The First World War, which claimed the lives of so many men on the battlefields of the Western Front, also profoundly affected the character and everyday life of the nation at home. It was the first 'total war' and the whole country contributed to the war effort. The unrelenting demands of the trenches eventually forced the Government to introduce conscription while, for those left behind, the state intervened more and more in the lives of its citizens. Hardships increased: food and fuel were in very short supply and rationing had to be imposed in 1916. The civilian population was also directly involved in the hostilities with the bombing raids of zeppelins and aeroplanes. But the war did bring some changes for the better. The salaried classes grew, working conditions improved and the war also helped liberate women who replaced men in factories and public services, and joined the armed forces. When the armistice finally came, in November 1918, Lloyd George promised 'a fit country for heroes to live in' - though the reality proved to be less Utopian. The Illustrated London News continued to publish throughout the First World War and was supplemented by The Illustrated War News. These magazines provided a vivid pictorial chronicle of contemporary events and enable us, today, to enter into the spirit of a bygone era. (The author) has written a fascinating and fully-documented account of these momentous years, complemented by over 200 pictures from the original issues." Light edge wear to boards. Dust jacket has one tiny edge tear, light foxing at top & bottom inside edges, very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny dents and faint line indentations on front panel.

12 Blake, Steve and Lloyd, Scott. With John Baldock. THE KEYS TO AVALON: THE TRUE LOCATION OF ARTHUR'S KINGDOM REVEALED.
Shaftesbury, Dorset Element 2000 1862047359 / 9781862047358 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
302 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w maps, family trees, decorations, colour and b&w photographs. "(The authors) unearth the truth about King Arthur and the magical realm of Avalon. They reveal how, through their investigations, they traced original key documents which had lain neglected for centuries. By combining the ancient sources with an intimate knowledge of the British landscape, they have managed to cast new light on the Dark Ages. Every piece of the puzzle they have put together fits - perfectly. The authors prove that the stories about Arthur and Avalon are rooted firmly within historical events which took place within a precise geographical setting in Wales; they also expose how and to what ends Arthurian legend has been hijacked for political gain throughout the ages. By establishing the historical facts about Arthur, his knights and the exact location of Avalon, (they) rip away the tissue of fabrication and fairy-tale that has shrouded the true origins of the British people and of anyone claiming ancestry from these isles." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very minor edge wear, minor browning at inside edges, minor rubbing.

252 pages, 6 15/16" H. "A corps of corpses was what it seemed Garrett had committed himself to when Blake Peters turned up to reclaim some overdue favors. Someone was trying to kill Peters' boss, wealthy, retired General Stantor, in a most lingering, painful, and maybe poisonous way. And Peters wanted Garrett to keep the general from becoming a ghost of himself. But Stantnor's mansion held a host of surprises for a human detective who thought he'd seen it all. For while the general was dying slowly, his employees were losing their lives at a far speedier rate. And when some of the not-long-departed tried to enlist their comrades in the growing legions of the dead, Garrett knew it was time to call in his own troops in the person of Morley Dotes, the toughest half-elf around. Morley would guard his back against whoever had decided that Garrett, too, belonged six feet underground. And meanwhile, Garrett would try to handle - or get his hands on - both the killer and the mansion's two elusive beauties - who seemed invisible to everyone but Garrett!" 19 Crane, Walter. OF THE DECORATIVE ILLUSTRATION OF BOOKS OLD AND NEW.
London Bracken 1984 0946495416 / 9780946495412 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
243 pp, 8vo (8" H). B&w illustrations. "Originally published in 1896, this survey of book illustration is both a comprehensive guide to many facets of early work in the field and important evidence of Victorian taste and the influences which shaped it. Walter Crane, as a leading designer and illustrator, was exceptionally well placed to survey the subject - indeed, some of the finest pieces among over 100 drawings reproduced here are those by Crane himself. Crane begins by describing the artist's role in producing manuscripts and early printed books up to the end of the sixteenth century, giving an account of Italian, French and (particularly) German work. He then moves to the beginning of 'modern illustration', which he dates from the work of Blake, and takes in most of the major Victorian exponents of the art, with examples from such men as Rossetti, Selwyn Image, Arthur Hughes, Laurence Housman, Howard Pyle and Will H. Bradley. The result is a book which has delighted the collector for many years, and is now in increasing demand among art historians and typographers." Faint erased pencil mark on front free endpaper, light browning in margins of pages and to edges of text block, light wrinkling at fore-edge of pages 32 to 44 with two very small tears on fore-edge of pages 37 to 40 that are archivally taped. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
