2 Bailey, Catherine. THE SECRET ROOMS: A TRUE GOTHIC MYSTERY.
London Viking 2012 0670917559 / 9780670917556 Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
466 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, floor plans, map, family tree. "At 6 a.m. on 21 April 1940 John, the 9th Duke of Rutland, and one of Britain's wealthiest men, ended his days, virtually alone, lying on a makeshift bed in a dank, cramped suite of rooms in the servants' quarters of his own home, Belvoir Castle. For weeks, as his health deteriorated, his family, his servants - even the King's doctor - had pleaded with him to come out, but he had refused. After his death, his son and heir, Charles, the 10th Duke of Rutland, ordered that the rooms be locked up and they remained untouched for sixty years. What lay behind this extraordinary set of circumstances? (The author) unravels a complex and compelling tale of love, honour and betrayal, played out in the grand salons of Britain's stately homes at the turn of the twentieth century, and on the battlefields of the Western Front." Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing on rear panel.

4 Gossage, Carolyn. A QUESTION OF PRIVILEGE: CANADA'S INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS.
Toronto Peter Martin 1977 088778156X / 9780887781568 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
301 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)he first comprehensive examination of the independent schools and their role in Canadian society. Based on extensive research in neglected historical records and on hundreds of interviews from coast to coast, it documents the evolution of fifty schools across the country, sketches some of the famous (and infamous) headmasters and mistresses, and reveals the often unconventional beginnings of these Establishment establishments. No dry academic history, (it) concentrates on the people and the colour behind the grey walls: the milkman who became a headmaster by soliciting students on his rounds; the seven Anglican sisters who financed their school by selling used clothing; the school that acquired its property, an opulent nineteenth-century mansion, at a cut-rate price from a bankrupt social climber. (This) is a delight for everyone interested in Canadian education and social history." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, two tiny corner creases. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at bottom of spine, two tiny scuffs at top of spine, a few tiny dents on front hinge.

F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.), Gwynn-Browne, Arthur.
5 Gwynn-Browne, Arthur. F.S.P. - AN N.C.O.'s DESCRIPTION OF HIS AND OTHERS' FIRST SIX MONTHS OF WAR, JANUARY 1st - JUNE 1st 1940. (FIELD SECURITY PERSONNEL.)
London Chatto & Windus 1942 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Fair
159 pp, 7 1/2" H. "Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is in Field Security Personnel. He joined up 1939. Being a soldier is a new experience for him. 'F.S.P.' begins on a parade ground; it ends on Dunkirk beaches; in between it says a lot that has not been said before. Sergeant Gwynn-Browne is a character - (and) he is subtly and devastatingly and unexpectedly funny. The solemn and ceremonious business of standing in a line being counted is funny; so is the dubious pleasure of living on a Flemish farm with a 'very premeating little pig' as a co-billettee. Routine, discomfort, uncertainty, danger - they are all funny as Sergeant Gwynn-Browne sees them. But there is another side to the picture. There is Dunkirk with the soldiers waiting patiently on the beaches as the town blazes and the bombs fall. There is the 'honour and humanity' we are fighting for, and the new world we hope for. Indeed there is as much seriousness as of laughter in this book; and every reader will find himself in the company not only of a lively jester, but also of an original and thoughtful personality." Several small creases at bottom corner of title page - some indentation on a few subsequent pages, page leaf 13/14 has bee roughly trimmed at bottom edge, small shallow bump on front edge of spine, light edge wear, wrinkling at bottom and top of spine, light browning to edges of text block - small faint stain on top . Dust jacket is price-clipped, has a piece missing at bottom of front panel, several edge tears (one with old tape on inside) and edge chips light browning - a little more at edges and on spine, protected in a mylar sleeve.

8 Jack, Donald. Forewords by Pierre Berton and Martin M. Hoffman, M.D. ROGUES, REBELS, AND GENIUSES: THE STORY OF CANADIAN MEDICINE.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1981 0385155751 / 9780385155755 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
662 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(A) lively and absorbing account of more than 400 years of medicine in Canada, from the Indian shamans to the present day. Canadian doctors have made an enormous contribution to world medicine - their achievements range from the discovery of insulin to the development of the cobalt bomb. And the famouse names are here: Grenfell, Archibald, Osler, Bethune, Penfield, Selye, Banting. But, as Pierre Berton points out in his foreword, (this) is 'more than a history of Canadian medicine: in a curious way it is also a history of the Canadian nation. In his monumental examination of the place of doctors in our history, Donald Jack makes it clear that since Cartier's day medical men have been bound up in the development of the country - not only as practitioners but also as politicians, explorers, gadflies, soldiers, community leaders.' The author brings to his subject not only a depth of research but a novelist's eye for the dramatic, the humorous, and the eccentric. The medical men and women who appear in these pages, 'in their furs and shirtsleeves, bloodstained frock coats and sterilzed gowns, tell an intensely personal story of triumphant response to challenge; triumphant not least because their lives affirm the supreme value of the individual ego'." Wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, light rubbing, slight browning to top/bottom edges.
