QUADRANTUS REX., Coulehan, Norbert.
3 Coulehan, Norbert. QUADRANTUS REX.
Macmillan, London, 1959, first edition.
298 pp, small 8vo (7 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "In the second year B.C. the Emperor Augustus decided to call a conference for world peace, 'Pax Mundana', and despatched a young sea tribune, Titus to collect and escort to Rome the three gr eat Kings from Africa, Asia and the Baltic. This, in the first place, is the story of how Titus carried out his unusual assignment, the hazards and dangers of his voyages and his difficulties, both practical and diplomatic, with his noble c h a r g e s . But no less important than the sea tribune is Quadrantus, the Master of the squaresailer in which he travelled. It is soon apparent that this is no ordinary ship and Quadrantus is no ordinary master: a giant of a man, he runs his du mb c re w wi th u n canny precision and his navigation and seamanship verge on the miraculous. After the fruitless conference, Titus and Quadrantus escort the three Kings on what seems a hopeless mission to King Herod. Guided by a strange st a r, the Ki ngs a re lan ded n ear Philippi, and the half-whispered stories of the phenomena which heralded the Birth of Christ and the legend of a fourth King who set off for Bethlehem with his fellows yet failed to arrive, are given an unexpect ed tw ist when see n t hro ugh the mir ror of Norbert Coulehan's narrative." Tiny foxing specks on the top and fore-edge of the textblock, light to moderate edge wear, small bump at top of spine, light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket i s p rice cli pped, has ligh t to mod erat e ed ge wear/wrinkling, very small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light rubbing, light browning on flap-folds. 4 DeMond, C. W. PRICE, WATERHOUSE & CO. IN AMERICA: A HISTORY OF A PUBLIC ACCOUNTING FIRM.
Price Waterhouse, New York, 1951.
356 pp, 8vo, hard cover (dark green boards, gold lettering on spine/front cover) - no dust jacket. "The present volume is essentially a history of the United States firm and its practice. The first chapter gives some of the highlights of the initial development of the London firm. References are later made to many of the associated firms in other countries, particularly to the early days of the Canadian firm when the American practice was all one. The London firm during its second 50 years developed and expanded its practice throughout Great Britain and initiated many of the overseas developments of the international organization. This record is written for the intimate family of Price Waterhouse & Co., not for outside distribution. It closes with the death of one of our most colorful figures, J.C. Scobie, in 1944." Interior - a few erased pencil check marks against peoples names listed at the rear of the book who were linked to Price Waterhouse, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. MORE TALES FROM THE MESS., Noonan, Miles.
9 Noonan, Miles. MORE TALES FROM THE MESS.
Century, London, 1985, first edition.
173 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0712610677 B&w cartoons. "Readers who enjoyed 'Tales From the Mess' will be glad to know that that collection by no means exhausted its compiler's rich fund of anecdotes about the absurder a spects of life in the British army. Further researches have enabled Miles Noonan to assemble this sequel which again, while in no way reducing our admiration for the Nation's armed forces, will not encourage us to regard them with excessiv e s o l e m n i ty. Once again the settings of the tales range geographically from Malaya to Ireland and from South Africa to Liverpool and historically from Victorian times to the present day, and once again Miles Noonan does not vouch for their ab s ol ut e un va rn is hed truthfulness." Book very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling, minor browning at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good
