NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809., Deane, Anthony.
3 Deane, Anthony. NELSON'S FAVOURITE: HMS AGAMEMNON AT WAR 1781-1809.
London Caxton 2003 184067430X / 9781840674309 Reprint Fine Very Good+ Geoff Hunt cover art.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, maps. "This compelling narrative recounts the 28-year career of HMS Agamemnon, a 64-gun ship of the line which became one of the most famous vessels of the Royal Navy, commanded between 1793 and 1796 by Nelson, who always referred to her as his favourite ship. For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. This fascinating account of Agamemnon's career highlights all the significant events of the period and portrays the authentic world of the Nelsonic era." Book is Fine. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, two small faint scratches on rear panel.

Hamlyn, Quentin Reynolds, Adolf Galland, H.E. Bates, et al.) THE SPITFIRE LOG: A TRIBUTE TO THE WORLD'S MOST FAMOUS FIGHTER PLANE.

160 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w illustrations. "On 6 March 1936 was born one of the most famous and best-loved aeroplanes the world has ever known, the Spitfire. Just four years later its courageous young RAF pilots became the heroes of the Battle of Britain as they repelled the Luftwaffe attack. When, at the height of the conflict, supplies of metal for new Spitfires ran short, thousands of people donated old pots and pans for the sake of the gallant fighter. Today the Spitfire is still remembered with affection by all who flew in her. This tribute brings together a fascinating collection of writings by men who flew or admired her, from the top Allied flying ace of the Second World War, Air Vice Marshal 'Johnnie' Johnson, to his German counterpart, General Major Adolf Galland, and from such illustrious names as H.E. Bates, Richard Hillary, Lord Beaverbrook and Richard Dimbleby. As well as thrilling accounts of aerial combat the book includes a Battle of Britain chronology, a list of the twenty Spitfire squadrons and their bases, the plane's specifications, the story of its creation and a list of museums where Spitfires can now be seen." Toronto Natural Heritage 2009 1550028626 / 9781550028621 First Edition Fine
236 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Chronicling the history of Black families of the Yarmouth area of Nova Scotia, (this book) is a mirror image of the hopes and despairs and the achievements and injustices that mark the early stories of many African-Canadians. This extensively researched history traces the lives of those people, still enslaved at the time, who arrived with the influx of Black Loyalists and landed in Shelburne in 1783, as well as those who had come with their masters as early as 1767. Their migration to a new home did little to improve their overall living conditions, a situation that would persist for many years throughout Yarmouth County. By drawing on a comprehen-sive range of sources that include census and cemetery records, church and school histories, libraries, museums, oral histories, newspapers, wills, 'The Black Loyalist Directory', and many others, this is a history that has been overlooked for far too long. " Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - clean and bright.

Fallbrook, CA Armed Forces Journal International / Aero 1982 Book Club Edition Very Good Very Good
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H). B&w illustrations. "In the early 1960s technicians took the pilot out of the plane's cockpit, put him on the ground at an electronic black box and had him 'fly' spy missions by remotely controlling an pilotless jet airplane. Because of this advanced technique, formerly dangerous intelligence-gathering flights in hostile areas were possible without risking the lives of pilots or the loss of extremely costly manned aircraft. This then is the story of 'Lightning Bugs' and other Ryan reconnaissance drones and the contributions they made in combat in Southeast Asia." THE BATTLE OF THE NILE., Warner, Oliver.
19 Warner, Oliver. THE BATTLE OF THE NILE.
London B.T. Batsford 1960 First Edition Good+ Very Good-
184 pp, large 8vo (9" H). B&w illustrations. "(Oliver Warner's) approach to The Nile is the same as it was in (his) earlier work (on Tragalgar). The scene is set, the circumstances under which the battle was fought are made clear; the commanders are introduced and the reader comes to know them as human beings no less than as naval captains; the action itself is graphically described, largely through the eye-witness accounts of participants; and the battle's aftermath is followed through in a way which relates the particular action to the war as a whole. The vividness of Mr. Warner's narrative is heightened by the number and variety of his illustrations. Here, from their faces, we can see what manner of men were Nelson, Napoleon, Troubridge, Brueys, de Saumarez or Ball; we can follow the English line as it unhesitatingly sailed into action against the anchored French; and we are present when 'L'Orient' blew up. (This book) is, in short, a most spirited and expert account of one of the classic naval actions of history."
