THE BOOK OF EVE., Beresford-Howe, Constance.
1 Beresford-Howe, Constance. THE BOOK OF EVE.
Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1973, first edition.
170 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 077050888X "Here is a fresh, beautifully written story of an almost old woman who, one morning on impulse, walks out of a forty-year-old marriage, leaving her invalid husband calling querulou sly for his breakfast. In a desperate bid for a life of her own, and with little more money in her pocket than her first Old Age Pension cheque, Eva exchanges her sedate and conventional middle-class existence in a Montreal suburb for a ch a o t i c r o o ming-house life in one of the city's poorer districts. Eva's account of her transition from housewife to eccentric is the basis for this warm and delightful novel which, in a surprising way, turns out to be a love story. Eva herse lf i s a wo n de rf ul character, with a prickly charm, an acid humour, and a probing, active intelligence that gives sense and meaning to her strange choice, and makes her story a compelling and unforgettable experience." A few tiny light foxing ma rks o n ver so of de dic ation page and up to and including page 6, two tiny corner bumps, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. 2 Beresford-Howe, Constance. THE MARRIAGE BED.
Macmillan of Canada, Toronto, 1981, first edition.
232 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0771595549 "Meet Anne Graham, mother of three-year-old Martha and one-year-old Hugh, young, attractive, heavily pregnant - and alone. Things have not worked out at all the way Anne intended. Her teenage plans of marrying a rich Older Man who would put her through university were thwarted when Max, the first suitable candidate to come along, married Anne's mother, Billie, instead. Then her promising academic career was cut sh o r t w h e n her first real romance led to an unexpected pregnancy and an early marriage. Finally, and much more recently, her stable home life crumbled with her husband's announcement that he was leaving her to move into a commune with his secr et ar y. N ow s he is a housebound single mother of two and three-quarter children, whose intellectual life has shrunk to stolen moments of bedtime reading....The solution to her problem is clear to her friends and neighbours. She must find som eon e t o m i nd the ch ild r en and then go back to school or get at job. It's obvious. Or is it? Once again, Constance Beresford-Howe has approached a common theme from an uncommon point of view, with her own blend of perceptiveness and ironic hum our. Th e res ult is a boo k that is gritty, entertaining, and, ultimately, optimistic - just like its heroine." THE PENINSULAR JOURNAL, 1808-1817., D'Urban, Benjamin, Major-General Sir. Edited, with introduction, by I.J. Rousseau.
3 D'Urban, Benjamin, Major-General Sir. Edited, with introduction, by I.J. Rousseau. THE PENINSULAR JOURNAL, 1808-1817.
Greenhill, London, 1988, reprint.
355 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0947898875 Maps. "Whether among the first three to charge the French guns at Medellin, leading his troopers into the enemy ranks at Salamanca, or evolving order out of the chaos that bedevill ed the Portuguese Army in 1809, Sir Benjamin D'Urban was not only a brave and resolute soldier but also a painstaking and highly efficient Chief of Staff to Marshal Beresford. Finding, on arrival at Corunna in October 1808, that he had been a p p o i n t ed to that part of the Army left behind in Portugal, D'Urban set out to meet Sir John Moore in the hope of receiving fresh orders. This was the beginning of six years of unbroken service which included taking part in ten battles and s ie ge s. Af te r a short period as Staff Officer to Sir Robert Wilson, he was appointed Colonel and QMG to the Portuguese Army by Marshal Beresford in April 1809. The 'Journals' give a day to day summary of the Peninsular Campaign, which was found in val uab l e b y S ir Charles Oman, and provides a counter to what D'Urban considered unfair criticism of Beresford by Sir Charles Napier. Long out of print, this unique record of events fills a need for everyone interested in the campaigns of 1809 -181 5, p ar ticu larl y i n regard to the operations of the Right Wing of the Allied Army and of the part played by the Portuguese Army, which has not always received the credit due for some of its major exploits." Small bump and wrinkling at bott om of spin e. Dust jack et h as light wrinkling at bottom of spine, slight fading to color on spine, a few tiny dints - mainly on hinges. Very Good/Very Good

192 pp, 4to (11 1/8" H). Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with maps/battle plans, uniform studies, reproductions. "(D)escribes in detail the composition and evolution of the British Army and its Allied foreign contingents, from the earliest campaigns of the French Revolutionary Wars until the final triumph at Waterloo. All aspects are covered, from the life of the ordinary redcoat to weaponry, tactics, administration, the supporting services at home and the numerous 'foreign corps'; and to the military genius of Wellington himself, all of which are supported by lavish illustrations. An account of all the campaigns undertaken from the first landing in the Netherlands in 1793 to Waterloo show how this army was employed, including not only the famous episodes of the Peninsular War but such little-regarded expeditions as those to South America in 1806, to Denmark, Egypt, the Cape and North America, and in India where Wellington gained his first victories. Full coverage is also accorded the Royal Navy and its invaluable services, not only in combat but in the less-glamorous but no less important duties of blockade and support for the military campaigns: in effect, a complete study of 'the most complete machine'." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one very small corner bump, place and date of purchase written on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing.
