427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." Illustrated with political cartoons.

BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC., Brooks, Polly Schoyer.
4 Brooks, Polly Schoyer. BEYOND THE MYTH: THE STORY OF JOAN OF ARC.
New York J.B. Lippincott 1990 03973242257 First Edition Very Good Very Good- Signed by Author
176 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. Signed by author on half title page. "Inspired by her love for France, by her determination to see the rightful king rule, and especially by her private visions and voices, Joan (of Arc) overcame the doubts of everyone from her parents to the king himself. Within a year Joan led the French to a resounding victory at Orleans and made possible the coronation of Charles VII in the cathedral of Reims. But after her glorious triumph, conflicts in the French camp, bad advice, and perhaps Joan's own headstrong nature brought her to defeat and finally to imprisonment and trial for heresy and witchcraft. Burned as a witch by the English after what was largely a political trial, she was later cleared of heresy, and eventually canonized. She is now the most popular French heroine and saint. (The author) has sifted through the records of Joan's trial, examined the studies of major historians, and roamed the streets of Domremy to find out who Joan really was. Neither a cardboard saint nor - as few still think - a witch, Joan emerges as a lively, emotional, determined person who believed so strongly in her cause that she overcame every obstacle she faced. Here is a new Joan for a new generation ready to question old legends and to marvel again at her courage and faith." Part of a series of history books aimed at the teenage reader. Light wrinkling at top of spine, previous owner's signed bookplate on front pastedown. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, a few small light line indentations on front panel and on rear flap, slight fading to spine color.

5 Byng, John, Viscount Torrington. Edited by Donald Adamson. RIDES ROUND BRITAIN.
London Folio Society 1996 Very Good Anne Hayward.
505 pp, 8vo (8" H). Bound in quarter orange-brown buckram, Ann Muir marbled paper boards; dark brown endpapers. Plain dark brown slipcase. Frontispiece and 25 half-page and smaller b&w engravings by Anne Hayward, 9 maps by Denys Baker. A countryman at heart, Byng travelled throughout Britain on horseback whenever his position at the Stamp Office would allow him to escape from London. As a chronicler of the eighteenth-century, "Byng travels with an observant though never a roving eye. At times it is the eye of the modern photo-journalist, as when he records a meeting with Humphrey Repton, visits Sarah Siddons in her dressing-room at Birmingham, or glimpses Warren Hastings changing horses on his way to Daylesford. At other times his eye is more like that of the self-taught but well-trained artist, as when he admires the flickering tapers of Yordas Cave or the Kentish hop-pickers working in all haste among the twinkling lights of the hopfields. At Cromford in Derbyshire the bustle and brilliance of Arkwright's great cotton 'manufactory' even blind him to what he basically regards as the horrors of creeping industrialism: 'The cotton mills,' he observes, 'seven storeys high and fill'd with inhabitants, remind me of a first-rate man of war and, when they are lighted up on a dark night, look most luminously beautiful.' As is now widely acknowledged, (Byng) is one of the greatest British travellers of the eighteenth or indeed of any century. Not only has he produced an excellent travel guide (as, in a way, he intended to do); his work is also a major contribution to the social history of England and Wales - and especially Welsh social history. (This book) is, finally, a masterpiece of social observation, written with as fine an eye for detail as Jane Austen's and (like Pepys diary) superb in its delineation of its author's own character." Some light rubbing to paper on boards. Slipcase has minor rubbing and one very small edge bump.

For three of the most critical decades of British naval history, Agamemnon was at the centre of events, fighting at the Battle of the Saintes, Copenhagen and, of course, Trafalgar. Later she served in the West Indies, participating in the Battle of Santo Domingo, and in South American waters until she was wrecked in 1809 in Maldonado Bay, off the coast of present-day Uruguay. "Strategically located at the confluence of the St. Lawrence River, the Rideau River system and Lake Ontario, the city of Kingston is cloaked in more than three hundred years of history. This picturesque city has attracted an increasing number of artists in recent years, and two of them - poet Joan Finnigan and painter Frank Johnston - have captured the character and spirit of Kingston in a book filled with photographs old and new, maps and engravings, paintings, drawings, historical vignettes and poetry. With an emphasis on the human aspects of Kingston life, (it) is an expression of affection not just for the city and its environs, but for its populace over the generations. Ten original watercolours by Frank Johnston - all faithfully reproduced in full colour - add to the beauty of the book. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776., Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman.
12 Gallagher, John J. Foreword by James Dingeman. THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN 1776.
New York Sarpedon 1995 188511902X / 9781885119025 Very Good+ Very Good
206 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "It is not often realized that in Brooklyn, New York, for a few tense hours in 1776, the fate of the entire United States hung by a thread. An American defeat, the Battle of Brooklyn has been all but neglected in our collective memory for what it earned with the blood of its participants - honored status as one of history's great battles. Besides being the largest clash of the Revolution, in terms of both troops and casualties, the action at Brooklyn (sometimes called 'The Battle of Long Island') brought the fledgling American republic to the brink of disaster. At the height of the fighting, only the valiant sacrifice of one regiment - the Marylanders - staved off a catastrophe. The British army, meanwhile, executed a three-pronged surprise assault with admirable professionalism. The wilds of Brooklyn became a killing ground for the British and Hessian troops who were able to begin the war convinced the colonials would not be able to stand against their onslaught of bullets and steel. While a drama of rare instensity on its surface, the Battle of Brooklyn also holds a larger significance: the King's men did not invade Brooklyn to face other kings' men; they were sent to fight a population. Rules of engagement were uncertain and passions for and against the rebellion ran high. When the smoke cleared at Brooklyn, in 1776, the modern age of 'democratic warfare' had begun. The Battle of Brooklyn was a victory for the British Empire. But contained within the triumph was a demonstration of the type of American resolve and courage that would eventually result in independence for the United States." Faint cigarette odour. Dust jacket has minor rubbing, tiny tear at top of spine, crease at top edge of rear flap, barcode label on inside of rear panel.

"On 27 February 1574 died Sir William Harpur - a Bedford boy who went to London, became Lord Mayor, and endowed his old school. On 4 August 1873 Qu een Victoria approved a revision of the scheme under which the Harpur Trust operates. This book traces in lively detail the educational battles of the past up to those of today. It shows how the Trust till 1897 supplied practically all Be d f o r d ' s e ducation. It describes how government intervention obliged the Trust to concentrate on four main schools, which have since become know all over the world. The subject matter goes beyond Bedford and Bedfordshire. The book oulines th e ba si s fo r t he Trust's work, the development of farmland in the village of Holborn to becoming part of the heart of London. This endowment has made the Trust one of the most important educational foundations in the country. Comparisons wi th ot her sc ho ols i nd ica te the rich complexity of England's educational system. The influx of service and professional families brought to Bedford boys and girls who later served country and Commonwealth, and an appendix gives some indicatio n o f t heir ran ge of s erv ice ." A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS., Heal, S.C.
15 Heal, S.C. A GREAT FLEET OF SHIPS: THE CANADIAN FORTS & PARKS.
Vanwell, St Catharines, Ontario, 1999, first edition.
312 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1551250233 B&w photographs, drawings, plus large fold-out plan: "General Arrangement Standard Steamer" in pocket at rear. "The era of the Canadian Forts and Parks has long since passed into history. While it lasted, it engaged a great deal of effort and capital on a scale never seen before in our country; from the men and women in the shipyards, to the crews who manned the ships, and the industrial leaders who transformed the s h i p y a r ds from very small-scale producers into world-scale shipbuilders for their day. By 1941 Canada's small shipbuilders had begun to turn out a fleet of 10,000- and 4,700-ton merchant ships which in every way were the equal of those from Br it is h an d Am erican shipyards. At the height of this great effort the Canadian yards were delivering one new ship every three days. Not only did we send to sea a large fleet of Park ships under the Canadian flag, manned by Canadian crews and ma nag ed by Ca na dia n managers, but we also bare-boat-chartered a similar size fleet of Fort sister ships for British management and operation. These Fort and Park ships were to be found in every theatre of war from 1942 on, at all times willi ng w orkh ors es of t he ocea ns, unheralded, unsung and later, like their crews, usually ignored by historians and government alike. While the postwar survivors of this fleet sailed under many flags, they did constitute an important element in reb uildi ng th e pe ace that fo llowe d. And now that Canada is no longer an owner of deep sea ships under the Canadian flag, it is timely that we remember our achievement of over fifty years ago. It was a unique undertaking that will never be repe ated i n a wo rld n ow s o diff eren t." M oderate bump at top of spine/rear hinge area. 18 Macleish, William H. OIL AND WATER: THE STRUGGLE FOR GEORGES BANK.
Boston Atlantic Monthly Press 1985 0871130076 / 9780871130075 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
304 pp, 8 1/2" H. "Georges Bank, 20,000 square miles of turbulent shoal water off Nantucket, is one of the richest fishing grounds in the world, its depths populated by cod, haddock, flatfish, and scallops. Until recently it was a gathering place for immense fishing trawlers of all nations. Then the Bank also became a bone of contention for explorers in oil, pitting the great multinational companies against one another, to say nothing of federal and state governments, jostling for their share of offshore oil revenues. Georges has long been the subject of dispute between the United States and Canada, and in the fall of 1984 the International Court of Justice in the Hague awarded a large portion of the Bank to Canada. Oil-lease sales were scheduled - and cancelled. Fishermen protested to their political representatives, who protested to their governments. Over the storm-lashed and fecund waters of Georges Bank, William MacLeish has travelled many times - by trawler, by helicopter, by scientific research vessel, by airplane, and by scallop boat. His pages bring us the scientists, the fishing people, politicians, lawyers, and oilmen connected with Georges Bank." Book is slightly cocked, has minor soiling on top of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - bump at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, a few small light scuff marks, light soiling/rubbing on rear panel.

19 Mika, Nick and Mika, Helma. With Larry Turner. HISTORIC MILLS OF ONTARIO.
Belleville, Ontario Mika Publishing 1987 0921341083 / 9780921341086 First Edition Near Fine Very Good
208 pp, 11 1/8" H. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, reproductions. "(C)oncentrates on Ontario's saw, grist, flour and woollen mills, beginning with some of the early mills built by government before the 1800s to supply the needs of Loyalist settlers who came to Upper Canada. Although these mills have long since disappeared, they have been depicted by contemporary artists and their portrayals have been reproduced. Enterprising pioneers and later immigrants and their descendants in the 19th century harnessed the magnificent water power of Ontario's rivers and creeks, and the mills they erected on their banks in various counties are featured (here) in text and pictures. Historian Larry Turner gives a general overview of milling in Ontario and the significance of the role the miller played in the life and growth of 19th century communities. He explains basic milling methods, the mill machinery and technological advances, changing economic conditions that influenced the operation of mills, and he discusses restoration of the remaining heritage structures as a practical approach to their preservation. (W)ritten for anyone interested in Ontario's past, for history buffs and genealogists, for it tells about the people who built and operated the mills and about their successes and failures."
