New York St. Martin's 1997 0312156820 / 9780312156824 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
215 pp, 8 1/2" H. 3rd printing. "What started as a last resort on the quest for a cheap gift soon became an addiction. (The authors) found themselves visiting every rare-book store between Boston and Manhattan, spending ever increasing amounts of money on first editions, leather-bound classics, and out-of-print volumes. Along the way, they gained an education in books - and in people - that we can all savor. This warm and witty story is filled with eccentric characters, from snobby book dealers to bearded backwoodsmen (who just happen to have a fortune in rare books in their barns). ('Used and Rare') is an enjoyable education and a love letter to book lovers everywhere." The remains (backing paper) of two large labels on the free front endpaper, tiny dent/scuff on top of text block, very minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small tear at bottom of rear hinge - archivally taped.

"Thanks to the extraordinary photographs and gardening wisdom in this classic book, the elegant intim acy of the English cottage garden is a practical possibility for amateur gardeners in diverse regions of the United States. Margaret Hensel, whose photographs and articles on garden design have appeared in 'Horticulture' and many other magazine s , h as analyzed the aesthetic and horticultural elements of ten representative cottage gardens - eight in England and two in the United States (including Tasha Tudor's at Corgi Cottage in Vermont). Her spectacular photographs render the look and a tm o sp here of these gardens, while her text focuses on easily grown, readily available plants that are adaptable to a wide variety of climatic and soil conditions. In the back of the book may be found specific horticultural information on a wi de var ie ty of cottage garden plants commonly available in the United States, glossaries of Latin and common names, a list of sources for old rose varieties, and a detailed index. The gardens in this beautiful book are not those of the great estat es of E ngl and , manicured by staffs of professional gardeners. They are, instead, labors of love on the part of individual homeowners, many of whom started with bleak, rubble-strewn lots and went on to create the enchanted settings pictured here. "(A) dark and disturbing look at the original outlaw motorcycle gang - and the changes that have reshaped the old-boy network. The Hell's Angels Moto rcycle Club - the most dominant and most feared of all motorcycles gangs - is trading in its bikes, brotherhood and booze for Jaguars, Wittnauers and business suits. The Hell's Angels are now one of the most powerful underground corporate o r g a n i z a t ions - rivalling even the Mafia. But this new direction has come with no small sparing of blood. Territorial wars and retaliatory violence now dominate club activity as chapters vie for the lucrative profits of drug trafficking and p ro st it ut io n. 168 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Colour photographs. "In the 18th century, artists and potters were not slow to reflect in models the interest of the time in identifying and selectively breeding individual types of dog, and continental and home-based factories started to produce realistic examples of both sporting and pampered dogs. Following Landseer's painting of 1836 of Queen Victoria's favourite dog, the King Charles Spaniel Dash, the potters of Staffordshire were not slow to seize the opportunity to turn Dash into a national icon. Pairs of spaniels were portrayed in clay in enormous quantities, followed soon after by many other breeds. The modellers are usually anonymous, but the simple hand-painted decoration, often done by children, gives each piece an individuality and vitality, and as (this) charming book shows, these dogs have an enduring quality that makes them as endearing today as they were when first made." Very light rubbing, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and top edge of rear panel, two tiny dints on front hinge.
