New York St. Martin's Griffin 1995 0312125615 / 9780312125615 Very Good
445 pp, 8 3/16" H. "The apparent vulnerability of the Habsburg Empire at the time of Maria Theresa's accession destabilized the whole of Europe and, with Frederick the Great's invasion of Silesia, a cycle of violence was initiated that lasted for eight years and ravaged much of the continent. The vast conflict, which involved almost all the European powers and their empires, is the subject of (this book). (It) provides a highly readable narrative of a complex period that fundamentally shaped the European state system. The author explores the often changing war aims of the major belligerents - Austria, France, Great Britain, Prussia, Piedmont-Sardinia, and Spain - and links diplomatic and military events to the political and social context from which they arose." Interior - a few pages with a tiny soft corner bump, otherwise clean and tight with no other ownership marks. Exterior - light edge wear, small coft crease at top rear corner.

London Methuen 1955 First Edition Very Good Very Good- Jacket design by Philippe Jullian.
254 pp, small 8vo (7 7/8" H). Map endpapers, b&w photographs. "With (Gedye) the reader is introduced to the wonders of Austria's natural beauties, her architectural treasures, her famous collections of pictures, her music and the character of her delightful inhabitants; and expert advice is given on where to swim, ski, fish or shoot, and on the choice of local dishes and wines. (At the time of writing - 1955) more than two-thirds of Austria is open to the western tourist, and in the Tyrol, Vorarlberg, Salzburg, Upper Austria, Carinthia and Styria he will find some of the most attractive scenery in Europe. Although Vienna is surrounded by the Russian zone, there is no difficulty in visiting it. In spite of the scars of battle, the splendours of the gothic and baroque churches, the medieval alleyways, and the picturesque suburbs of the lovely old city are almost unchanged." Minor edge wear, tiny foxing marks on top of text block, three tiny stains on fore-edge of text block, one tiny corner bump. Dust jacket has light browning - mainly on spine, edges and flap-folds, a few tiny foxing marks, a few tiny edge tears and one 1" edge tear - archivally taped.

Nor has the cost to the Allies been forgotten. Unpublished letter-books at Blenheim have been drawn upon to show Marlborough's care for the wounded and their nursing. Finally the author traces Marlborough's triumphal return to London and the building of Blenheim Palace before taking the reader on a brief stroll through the battlefield as it is today." DON ALFONSO XIII: A STUDY OF MONARCHY., H.R.H. Princess Pilar of Bavaria and Major Desmond Chapman-Huston. Introuction by Aubrey F.G. Bell.
4 H.R.H. Princess Pilar of Bavaria and Major Desmond Chapman-Huston. Introuction by Aubrey F.G. Bell. DON ALFONSO XIII: A STUDY OF MONARCHY.
John Murray, London, 1931, first edition.
436 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Family tree, b&w plates. "King Alfonso is one of the most outstanding figures now alive, in contemporary political history, in sport, and in social life. He is much beloved and equally disliked , as recent events in Spain have proved. This study, written by a very near relation, in collaboration with a well-known English author, shows the King as he really is, in public and in private life; it shows what his aims are, and how he h a s t r i e d to carry them out; and explains the present difficulties in Spain and the collapse of the monarchy. The authors, in writing this book, have had privileges and sources of information which have been given to no one else, and they h av e ha d p er so na l experience of the revolution. It is, therefore, essentially an authoritative work, as well as being immensely interesting both from the historic and the human points of view." Small label from book store on front pastedown, sl ig ht br own ing to re ar endpapers, very light edge wear to boards, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, one very small corner bump, foxing marks on top of textblock and on hinges, small stain/scuff on bottom of textblock. TV Books, New York, 2000.
224 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1575001470 B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "The Western Front in World War I was the scene of devastating trench warfare and astonishing human loss: nearly 750,000 soldiers perished in the battles fought in France and Belgium from 1914 to 1918. (This book) traces the path those soldiers took, and presents the political, military, and human dilemmas of a bitter and bloody war. (It) takes us through the major and most costly battles of the Western Front, many of which garnered dubious gains at best, and all of which were won only with great human sacrifice. The first battle of Ypres was not only a scene of heavy Allied losses, but was dubbed by the Germ ans the 'Massacre of the Innocents'; Verdun was a scene of astonishing casualties, where the professed goal of the German commander was to bleed the French forces to death; the fighting in the trenches of the Somme - a battle of attrition tha t l a s t e d six months - proved a turning point for the morale of the British Army and 'the muddy grave of the German field Army, and of the confidence in the infallibility of German leadership'; while the long wearing slog toward Passchendaele w as pa ve d wi th inept leadership and mutinies in the French forces before dreadful conditions simply ground the battle to a halt. Portraying the Western Front in stark and moving terms, Holmes draws not only from current scholarship, but also fr om l ett ers w rit ten by the soldiers and the stories of the survivors themselves." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has minor rubbing, minor edge wrinkling, slight fading to color on spine. Very Good +/V er y Go od

352 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "(O)ffers a very different kind of tour to the armchair traveler. Wander through the haunted castles and cottages of Europe with Hans Holzer, the world's most famous psychic investigator, and explore a full range of psychic phenomena from the spirits of the British Isles to the haunts of Imperial Vienna. In England, Anne Boleyn's legendary ghost walks headless within the Tower of London; a procession of transparent monks appears in the Cathedral of Winchester, where no monks have trod since the sixteenth century; and Bloody Queen Mary still visits the four-poster bed where she slept in the dark days of 1553. At Kilkea Castle in Kildare, it is said that the Wizard Earl and his companions ride at night and will return someday from the beyond to 'put things right in Ireland'. Room No. 2 in the Hotel de l'Europe in Avignon holds a shocking surprise for the unwary guest; and in Paris, No. 3 avenue Montaigne offers a special concert of ghostly piano music from a spectral grand. Ghost occur wherever great tragedy has left an unfortunate person stranded between the next world and this one, someone who has not yet been freed from their emotional turmoil. The true accounts presented in this book are based on Dr. Holzer's personal investigations." One page leaf with two very small scollops at fore-edge. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, minor browning to inside edges.

HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS., Kershaw, Ian.
8 Kershaw, Ian. HITLER. 1889-1936: HUBRIS.
W.W. Norton, New York, 1999, book club edition.
845 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "From his birth in a small Austrian village to his fiery death in a bunker under the Reich chancellery in Berlin, Adolf Hitler left a murky trail, strewn with contradictory tales and overgrown with self-created myths. One truth prevails: the sheer scale of the evils that he unleashed on the world has made him a demonic figure without equal in this century....In an account drawing on many previously untapped so u r c e s - including Joseph Goebbels's diaries, recently discovered in Moscow - Hitler metamorphoses from an obscure fantasist, a 'drummer' sounding an insistent beat of hatred in Munich beer halls, to the instigator of the infamous failed putsch , to t he l e ad ership of a ragtag alliance of right-wing bullies and fanatics whose fusion created the Nazi party - the movement that would enthrall and invigorate a disillusioned people desperate to be rescued from the economic privation of pos tw ar Ger man y. W ith nuanced care, Kershaw assesses the response of ordinary Germans to Hitler the man and to his message of a new dawn for a country hemmed in by old foes, a message shot through with racist fantasies. This volume, the first of tw o, ends wit h t he prom ulgation of the infamous Nuremberg laws that pushed German Jews to the outer fringes of society, and with the march of the German army into the Rhineland - Hitler's first steps toward the abyss of war. Fascinating and d istu rbi ng, r ich w ith ins ight and analysis whose implications remain all too relevant as we near the end of Hitler's century." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, v ery l ight rubbi ng, sc ratc h ac ross bottom of rear panel with two small areas of laminate loss. Very Good+/Very Good
