THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE., Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.)
6 Epperly, Elizabeth Rollins. (Lucy Maud Montgomery. L.M.) THE FRAGRANCE OF SWEET-GRASS: L.M. MONTGOMERY'S HEROINES AND THE PURSUIT OF ROMANCE.
Toronto University of Toronto Press 1993 0802074618 / 9780802074614 First Paperback Edition. Soft Cover Very Good+
275 pp, 8vo (9" H). "Anne Shirley is the best known of a memorable group of heroines created by Lucy Maud Montgomery, a group that includes Emily Byrd Starr, Valancy Stirling, and Pat Gardiner. These characters are at the centre of Epperly's book, the first full-length critical study of all L.M. Montgomery's fiction. Epperly contends that Montgomery was a master of the romance genre, and through her use of literary allusions, repetitions, irony, and comic inversions she deftly manipulated the normal conventions of romance novels. By studying the fictional biographies of the heroines and their pursuit of romance, Epperly question the ways romance shapes what we consider valuable in our imaginings and experience. A book written for L.M. Montgomery fans and scholars." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, clean and bright.

LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI., Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>)
7 Jones, Kathleen. (Christina Rossetti>) LEARNING NOT TO BE FIRST: THE LIFE OF CHRISTINA ROSSETTI.
New York St. Martin's Press 1992 0312070179 / 9780312070175 First American Edition Hard Cover Good Very Good
252 pp., 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, reproductions. "(E)xamines Christina Rossetti's life alongside those of of other nineteenth-century women writers - notably Emily Bronte, Elizabeth Barrett Browning, and Emily Dickinson. (She) was the youngest of four children, born in England to Italian parents. Although she and her brother, Dante Gabriel, were known as the 'two storms', Christina's passionate nature was curbed in a way that her brother's was not, as she submitted to the social and religious pressures that lay so heavily on Victorian women. Like E.B.B., Christina suffered the tyranny of a loving family. Her sister Maria's influence was described as 'a species of police surveillance', and Christina was always careful never to write anything that would hurt her mother. As her personal life became increasingly tragic, her output of religious poetry grew. Her desire for both poetic and moral excellence kept her continually in conflict, a struggle whose corrosive effects deeply affected her writing. (Her) deliberate self-effacement, Dante Gabriel's portrayal of her as the meek virgin, and William Rossetti's role as editor and interpreter of her work have gradually blotted out the passionate, lively spirit who wrote with such simplicity and power. (The author's) fascinating work finally strips away the shadows of Christina's life to reveal her true self." Varying levels of sun fading to spine, top/bottom edges & top 1 1/2" of rear board; tiny printers ink mark in margin of pages 4 & 5. Dust jacket has very light edge wear - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

8 Mellor, John. THE COMPANY STORE: JAMES BRYSON McLACHLAN AND THE CAPE BRETON COAL MINERS, 1900-1925.
Toronto Doubleday Canada 1983 0385128126 / 9780385128124 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good-
362 pp, 8 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "The devastating story of Cape Breton's miners and the strikes they launched against the companies that owned their homes, their possessions, and their churches. Canadians - and the rest of the world - will be shocked by accounts of police brutality and murder, mass demonstrations, rebellion, scandalous politicking, and most of all, desperate poverty and hunger. The miners had always been paid starvation wages by companies that held total monopolies of such towns as Glace Bay. The first time they launched a strike in 1905, soldiers were brought in and machine guns and barbed wire were set up around the mining communities. Credit was cut off from company stores (the only stores). Miners were evicted from company-owned houses (the only houses) in the middle of winter. The death toll was enormous. Strikes over the next fifteen years simply led to continued harrassment and eviction. At one time, the company was permitted, by government order, to employ hundreds of special police, mounted on horseback and supplied with guns and heavy sticks, to batter miners into submission. James Bryson McLachlan was the hero of the Cape Bretoners when he took up their cause and organized strikers and entered into negotiations with the companies. (This) is also his story - and the story of the beginnings of the labour movement for all of Canada." Small Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper, a few tiny dents on bottom of text block, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, light browning at edges, light rubbing/soiling on rear panel.

ON YANKEE STATION: THE NAVAL AIR WAR OVER VIETNAM., Nichols, John B., Cdr. USN (Ret.) and Tillman, Barrett.
10 Nichols, John B., Cdr. USN (Ret.) and Tillman, Barrett. ON YANKEE STATION: THE NAVAL AIR WAR OVER VIETNAM.
Annapolis, Maryland Naval Institute Press 1987 0870215590 / 9780870215599 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
179 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "Combining vivid personal narrative with historical and operational analyses, this book takes a candid look at U.S. naval airpower in the Vietnam War. Authors John B. Nichols, a fighter pilot who flew some 350 missions off carriers in the Gulf of Tonkin, and Barrett Tillman, an award-winning aviation historian, make full use of their extensive knowledge of the subject to detail the ways in which airpower was employed in the years prior to the fall of Saigon. Confronting the conventional belief that airpower failed in Vietnam, they show that on the rare occasions when it was applied correctly, airpower was effective, but because it was most often misunderstood and misapplied, the overall results proved catastrophic. Calling their book a cockpit view of the war with the benefit of fourteen years of hindsight, the authors impart a compelling sense of what it was like to fly from Yankee Station between 1964 and 1973 and provide important lessons for those who may become involved in future conflicts. At the same time, they add considerable facts to the permanent war record." Faint erased pencil mark on half-title page, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny scuff on front board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

282 pp, 8 3/4" H. Number 17 in the Aubrey Maturin series of adventure in the great age of sail finds Jack Aubrey promoted to Commodore. "Command of a squadron calls for different skills from command of ship. It is the charatcter of the captains and the fighting and sailing qualities they can deliver from the men and ships entrusted to them that an admiral or a commodore must reckon with. Here perhaps Jack has sharpened his perceptions from his long association with Stephen Maturin, his indispensable surgeon and close friend. But might the nature of the secret mission on which the squadron is sent present a conflict of loyalties to this complicated, inscrutable figure?" Faint tanning in margins of pages, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very light browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has wrinkling at top of spine - very light edge wrinkling elsewhere.
