THE GOLDEN PRINCESS., Baron, Alexander.
1 Baron, Alexander. THE GOLDEN PRINCESS.
Cape, London, 1954, first edition.
402 pp, 8vo (8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "When Hernan Cortez landed in Mexico in 1519 he met an Indian slave girl, Marina, whose beauty and intelligence destined her to a remarkable career. Few records of her life exist, but she is still a l egendary figure among the people of Mexico. The background of her story is one of the most astonishing adventures in history, the conquest of the mighty Aztec empire by four hundred white men; an episode replete with the ingredients of roman c e - N a ture's barriers surmounted, feats of arms, fantastic stratagems, enemies overcome. In this novel, Alexander Baron sees Marina and Cortes not only as lovers but as adversaries in a terrible struggle. Cortes, one of history's classical h er oe s , i s de picted in all his power and glory, but the flaw in him, the seed of human weakness in the 'man of destiny', is laid bare. Against him stands Marina, primitive and untaught, but growing, with experience, in mental and moral stature; aw ake ni ng t o som ething to which her lover is blind - the human search for good - so that a conflict between them becomes inevitable. (The author's) approach to his theme is avowedly romantic. He believes that some aspects of the nature and dest iny of man ar e most truthfully revealed by the romantic vision. His novel abounds with big, vivid characters; but each of them is examined with insight, and is a unique, complex human being." Small bump to fore-edge of front board, one ver y sma ll c orn er b ump, v ery l ight edge wear and slight fading at top/bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has fading to spine color small closed tear with crease at top of front panel - archivally taped, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/ bottom of s pine , ver y sma ll water/ dye stain at front bottom/inside edge, one tiny scuff on front panel, minor soiling. 2 Baron, Mike, Reinhold, Bill and Lessmann, Linda. THE PUNISHER: INTRUDER. (STAN LEE PRESENTS.)
(Marvel, n.p. 1989.)
Unpaginated, 4to, hard cover (simulated black leather with silver lettering/decoration), in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in color. "The Punisher - an obsessed killing machine - the personification of revenge. The soul of Frank Castle died w hen he and his family stumbled onto a mob rubout and fell under a rain of lead. Castle's body alone survived, possessed by a desire to visit retribution on all those who flout the law and threaten the innocent. In 'Intruder', a secret society with government connections uses murder to further their political ends. The well-equipped assassins begin a chain of events that bring them into hard-hitting conflict with The Punisher when they target the wrong house and slaughter an innocent family. The action ranges from brutal hand-to-hand combat to soaring high-tech dogfights as both sides fight to the death." F/F

IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918., Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett.
3 Bartlett, C.P.O., Squadron Leader. Edited by his son, Nick Bartlett. IN THE TEETH OF THE WIND: THE STORY OF A NAVAL PILOT ON THE WESTERN FRONT, 1916-1918.
Leo Cooper, London, 1994, revised edition.
159 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0850523184 B&w photographs, diagram, map. "Philip Bartlett's account is a unique and fascinating record of a pilot's life in the dawn of aerial warfare and, as a history, of the first use of the bomber in war, strangely, by the Navy's aircraft. Flying by day and night alone, without navigational aids, the author moves from attacks on the U-boat bases to bombing the German Gothas as they prepared to raid London, and then to the s upport of Haig's drive to the coast which ended in the mud of Passchendaele. The climax in March, 1918, is reached when the author's squadron finds itself directly in the path of Ludendorff's massive thrust, which broke the British Vth Ar m y a n d n e a rly decided the War. Attacked by Richthofen's aces, No 5 Squadron RNAS flew continuous desperate missions against the advancing troops from aerodromes which were over-run time after time. At a time when the life of a pilot was re ck on e d in w e ek s, t he author flew 101 missions, enduring the rigours of flying without heat or oxygen, with hesitant engines, no parachutes and the attention of German fighters. Yet there is continual evidence of the pure joy of flying and won der a t the sh ee r b eau ty of the sky." Light browning to top edge of textblock, slight waviness to top/bottom edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling at top edge. Very Good+/Very Good

7 Bowyer, Chaz. BOMBER BARONS.
Barnsley, South Yorkshire Leo Cooper 2001 085052802X / 9780850528022 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
222 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs. "By the end of the Second World War, a grim total of 55,000 air crew of Bomber Command has lost their lives. This figure comprised no less than seventy per cent of RAF fatalities. Yet, unlike their more glamorous fighter pilot colleagues, very few bomber pilots or crewmen were familiar household names to the general public. However, within the ranks of the RAF itself, some individuals stood out gaining high reputations for their courage and leadership, a respect achieved regardless of the decorations they had won or the number of sorties flown. These were the 'Bomber Barons'. In this authoritative book, (the author) chooses a selection of these men. Some like Leonard Cheshire, Guy Gibson and Hughie Edwards, are today well known but others such as Nick Knilans, Syd Clayton and Jo Lancaster, are familiar only to those 'in the know'. For each, the author details their careers and relates episodes that reflect the qualities that made them outstanding. At the same time, the reader learns of the unfolding dramatic development of Bomber Command from the comparatively uncoordinated, non-cohesive raids of the early part of the war to the highly-trained and deadly offensive weapon it became under Sir Arthur Harris, from 1942 AOC-in-C of Bomber Command, and the Greatest Baron of them all." Small very light stain in margin of page 16. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, a few very tiny dints, very minor rubbing.

London Hodder & Stoughton 2011 1444730827 / 9781444730821 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+ Signed by Author
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w and colour photographs, reproductions. Signed by author on title page (signature only). "Almina was the illegitimate daughter of banking tycoon Alfred de Rothschild. She was his only daughter and he doted on her. She married the 5th Earl of Carnarvon, at 19, with an enormous dowry. At first, life at Highclere was a dizzying mix of sumptuous banquets for 500 and even the occasional royal visitor. Almina oversaw 80 members of staff - many of whom came from families who had worked at Highclere for generations. But when the First World War broke out, life at Highclere, both upstairs and downstairs, changed forever. History intervened and Almina and the staff of Highclere were thrown into one of the most turbulent times of the last century. Almina was forced to draw on her deepest reserves of courage in order to ensure her family, the staff and the castle survived. This is the remarkable story of a lost time. But Highclere remains and in this book, Lady Carnarvon weaves Almina's journey and those of her family into the heritage and history of one of England's most exquisite Victorian stately homes." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor to very light edge wrinkling.

211 pp, 8vo (8 13/16" H). Number 528 of a limited edition. INSCRIBED ON LIMITATION PAGE, "WITH BEST WISHES, ROY DERHAM". B&w illustrations. "Twelve weeks with TS 'Vindicatrix' prepared young lads for a life at sea, but not for the first trip - on liner, coaster, collier or cargo boat, cruise ship, tanker or tramp steamer. Often bullied, invariably seasick; cold, wet, hungry and initially miserable, most matured to become old hands - stewards, cooks or sometimes Master. Others swore never to go to sea again, and over four hundred lost their young lives for their country. Many became Distressed Seamen, yet survived. Some were torpedoed, sometimes more than once; some found themselves in prison camps. Others sailed to exotic places and met strange people. A few jumped ship and several fell overboard. Some were pushed. Most of them had strange experiences, saw far flung lands, and made lifetime friends. Many fell in love with the sea while some hated it but it earnt the respect of them all. Most express few regrets and all those in this book remember it well - that first trip as a graduate Vindi-boy, untried, uncertain and just a little afraid. This is the sum of the maiden voyages of over fifty Vindi-boys, who learnt their trade with the old lady of Sharpness between 1939 and 1966." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - spine very slightly cocked, very minor edge wear.

307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. 468 pp, 8vo (9" H), hard cover in dust jacket. VOLUME II ONLY. ISBN 0049421654 B&w frontispiece, 2 maps. "Admiral Keyes's correspondence with leading naval personalities sheds light on a variety of naval, military and diplomatic problems during the inter-war period. These include the struggle over control of the Fleet Air Arm, the Jutland Controversy, the Invergordon Mutiny and its aftermath, and both the Washington Naval Conference and the Lausanne Conference. There are interesting lett ers to Keyes from friends describing the situation in the Baltic, 1919-20, and China in the 1920s. Of particular interest is an interview with President Franklin D. Roosevelt in 1934; an account of a naval exercise in the Mediterranean si m u l a t i n g t he reinforcement of Singapore in the event of war with Japan; and a contingency plan for forcing the Dardenelles in the event of war with Turkey over the Mosul question. There are discussions of the writing of the official histor ie s of t he w ar , l et ters from a former Austrian naval officer on Adriatic matters and, of course, lots of revealing comments on the personalities (and feuds) of leaders of the time: Churchill, Trenchard, Beatty, Jellicoe, Chatfield and others . NEWSPAPER LORDS IN BRITISH POLITICS., Hambro, C.J. (Carl Joachim).
20 Hambro, C.J. (Carl Joachim). NEWSPAPER LORDS IN BRITISH POLITICS.
Macdonald, London, 1958, first edition.
63 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "There is hardly a more remarkable period in modern British politics, or in the history of the press, than those years when the big newspaper lords determined the attitude of governments and even the most important decisions. Viscounts Northcliffe and Rothermere, Barons Riddell and Dalziel are dead.
