Dreamweaver, Sydney, 1985.
256 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 094982500X Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs. "This is the story of commercial aviation - of the individual airlines which grew out of humble beginnings into the corpora te giants they are today. It is also the story of people. People such as Paterson, Six, Boeing, Fysh, Trippe, Hanshue, Plesman, Rickenbacker, Hughes, Frye and many other who pioneered commercial aviation and went on to found some of the gr e a t e s t a irlines in the world. The names of Boeing, Douglas, Lockhhed, Fokker, etc., are synonymous with flying today; but what of other pioneers, of companies which have ceased to exist or have gone out of aircraft building? Here the storie s of d eH av il l an d, Handley Page, Convair, Vickers, Stinson, Junkers, Airspeed, Avro, Bristol, Hawker Siddeley, as well as many smaller companies, are told in the context of the airlines that flew their products. With airline operations so con fu sed an d d epr ess ed to day, this book looks back on their illustrious histories - at the efforts of people who made them grow, at the attempts to halt that growth, at the transition from air travel in splendid comfort only for the wealthy to tod ay's 747 s, D C10s and L1 011s which pack in the low-fare-paying passengers like sardines. All in all, (this) is a fascinating chronicle of the world of commercial aviation from its very beginnings until the present." 177 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "(R)econstructs America's first era of manned flight and brings back to life the famous and less-known aviators who became the nation's heroes: Charles Lindberg, whose achievement was the great event of the 1920s - Amelia Earhart, one of the many women 'aces' (the aviation industry encouraged women because, as pilot Louise Thaden put it, 'If a woman can handle a plane, the public thinks it must be 'duck soup' for men.') - Calbraith P. Rogers, who made the first transcontinental flight, surviving a dozen crashes, a broken arm and collarbone, and a score of wounds caused by the metal fragments of an exploded engine - and many others. The book provides a vivid picture of America in the first half of the century - its aspirations and concerns - as expressed in the exuberant and often utopian response to a major new technology." 412 pp, large 8vo (9 15/16" H). "(P)rovides a unique, single-volume reference source on the armies, battles, weapons and leaders of the first of the great wars that shook Europe and the World during the twentieth-century. (It) presents in encyclopedic detail a wide range of information, facilitating rapid access to the essential facts and figures of the First World War. After a brief analysis of the causes of the Great War in the tumultuous Balkans up to 1914, the historical section charts the progress of the war, year by year and in all theatres and with clear, informative maps of important battles and offensives from Flanders to Mesopotamia. Haythornthwaite then records the nature of the war at sea and in the air before offering a detailed chronology of the war years and a meticulously researched record of the Weapons and Tactics of the war - everything from the basic rifles, trench construction, naval armour and mines to flame-throwers, artillery and trench communications. Further sections cover every combatant nation; the nature of their government and all active armed forces deployed, as well as a biographical chapter of the leading, notable and important personalities; a fascinating and revealing section of source material, documents and records; and an invaluable glossary and miscellaneous chapter which explains terminology, colloquialisms and obscurities rarely listed. Throughout the book there are fascinating, brief anecdotal selections which bring the dramatic struggle vividly to life, together with more than 250 contemporary photographs and engravings; clear maps illustrate the principal battles and campaigns." 238 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H). Patterned endpapers. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs. "(A) pictorial and factual documentation of the engagement of young men standing in the front line during World War II. Men, fighting as soldiers and innumerably losing their lives on all battle fronts in World War II. Also, this book does not tell of the organizations they belonged to and of their criminal leadership, but of the young soldiers who - being deceived for their ideals - got right into the twilight of the world's opinion after the end of the war. Five hundred exciting photographs never before published, illustrate the battles of a troop of which no one - not even its adversaries on the battlefield - denied its bravery and devotion. Photographs of unbelievable impression, taken during heavy attacks or massive tank battles, taken while invading ditches or taken while heavy defensive battles took place. These are not posed photographs: The SS War reporters literally took these pictures in the middle of fights, with MPi sitting beside them. There are photographs from all fronts, and of all divisions. Photos of well known troop commanders of the Waffen-SS, illustrations of all weapons and vehicles used are shown as well. Never before has a book shown these divisions and their direct connection to battle. This book was put together from photographs which were to be destroyed on order of the Reichssicherheits-Hauptamt in 1945. The negatives were actually burnt, mostly by accident. However, approximately 100,000 contacts remained untouched. The best have been chosen for this book. This is a pictorial book which will fascinate everyone who appreciates the single photograph as a documentation." Minor wrinkling at bottom of spine three tiny dints/scuff at top edge of boards. Dust jacket minor edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.
