FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
5 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

239 pp, 10" H. B&w and colour photographs, drawings. "(A) mixture of delightfully written anecdotes covering Roald Dahl's family upbringing, his youth and early days in Africa, and his happiness at home with Liccy, his wife, and their numerous children, grandchildren and friends. For this extensive family, there is no more enjoyable way of relaxing than sharing good food and wine. The meals they enjoy together round the old pine farmhouse table at Gipsy House are either fine examples of national dishes of their heritage - Norwegian, French, British, etc. - or favourite recipes that have delighted three generations of discerning eaters. Many recipes have acquired a particular significance for the Dahl family over the years, and these are introduced with reminiscences rich in nostalgia and humour. This book has many sections. The text has been written by Roald and Liccy Dahl, their children, close family and friends. The illustrations are by Quentin Blake, photographs by Jan Baldwin and all the recipes have been cooked by Josie Fison. The recipes are for all occasions, covering family birthday parties, Christmas and Easter celebrations, Roald's passion for chocolate, onions and wine, his enthusiasm for gambling and gardening and finally, a Dahl-style chapter: Hangman's Suppers - contributed by Francis Bacon, P.D. James, John le Carre, Peter Ustinov and others. It is a medly of great reading and good cooking." Light remainder mark on bottom of text block. JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS., Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis.
10 Douglas, R. Alan, edited and with introduction by. Foreword by William G. Davis. JOHN PRINCE: A COLLECTION OF DOCUMENTS.
Toronto The Champlain Society 1980 Limited Edition Hard Cover Very Good+
229 pp, large 8vo (9 3/4" H) - red cloth with gilt lettering/crest on spine. No. 844 of Twelve Hundred and Fifty Copies of this Volume prnted for the Champlain Society. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John Prince was undoubtedly one of the most colourful individuals to reside in Upper Canada during the half century that preceded Confederation. (The mythology that had grown up around his memory in southwestern Ontario identified him as the product of an illegal marriage between George IV and Maria Anne Fitzherbert.) His eventful career as an attorney, politician, soldier, entrepreneur, and jurist caused him to become a legend in his own lifetime both in Essex County, where he resided at Sandwich from his arrival in 1833 until 1860, and in Sault Ste Marie where he spent the last ten years of his life as Judge of the Algoma District. In the legislature his independence and erratic individualism soon earned him the reputation of a political maverick. Business interests and entrepreneurial instincts attracted him to railway and banking ventures as early as the 1830s. Individualist and eccentric though he was, John Prince was still very much a man of his age." Minor wear at corners.

Toronto Champlain Society for Government of Canada/University of Toronto Press 1966 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
381 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Red cloth with gold lettering/banding on spine. B&w illustrations (1 colour), fold-out map. "The period covered by this book is one of the most important in the history of Toronto. It begins in February, 1815, when news of the end of the War of 1812 reached York, and ends on March 6, 1834, when Toronto became the first incorporated city in Ontario. During this time it had changed from a small, undistinguished village, whose main reason for being was that it was the capital of Upper Canada, to a booming city. Immigration increased the population fourteen-fold, and gave to Toronto the strongly British attitudes it was to maintain for more than a century. Individuals acting alone could no longer accomplish what was needed by the burgeoning community, and the citizens of York combined to provide a more or less efficient system for coping with their problems. Towards the end of the period political animus and the outbreak of cholera complicated its smooth functioning, but nevertheless the prototypes of many of Toronto's present institutions were established at this time." Two faint 1" surface paper scratches/scuffs at top corner of pages xlii & xliii. Dust jacket has very rubbing, very light edge wear at top/bottom of flap-folds.

Cambridge University Press, Cambridge, 1996, reprint.
425 pp, 8vo (9" H), soft cover. ISBN 0521589878 Maps, battle plans. "The success of the First Crusade, and its capture of Jerusalem in 1099, has been conventionally explained by its ideological and political motivation. This book looks at the Fi rst Crusade primarily as a military campaign and asks why it was so successful. Modern writing about the Crusade has tended to emphasise the moral dimension and the development of the idea of the crusade but its fate was ultimately decide d o n t h e f ield of battle. This book looks at the nature of war at the end of the eleventh century and the military experience of all the contending parties in order to explain its extraordinary success. It is the first such examination, tak in g i nt o a cc ou n t all other factors but emphasising the military." Interior - previous owner's small stamp on inside of front cover. 13 Fredette, Raymond H. Introduction by Tom D. Crouch. Foreword by Hanson W. Baldwin. Afterword by Marshal of the Royal Air Force Sir John Slessor. THE SKY ON FIRE: THE FIRST BATTLE OF BRITAIN 1917-1918 AND THE BIRTH OF THE ROYAL AIR FORCE.
Washington, D.C. Smithsonian 1991 1560980168 / 9781560980162 Reprint. Soft Cover Very Good
289 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "World War I in the air is popularly recalled as a romance of dawn patrols and chivalrous duels between Spads and Fokkers over the Western Front. All but forgotten are the day and night raids German airmen carried out against England with large bombers during 1917-1918. Based on firsthand accounts from British and German sources, (this book) explores all aspects of the first systematic strategic air campaign in history, including the impact it had on the strategy and conduct of World War II. The daring airmen who pioneered this new mode of warfare flew twin-engined Gotha and Giant bombers. Their raids on London spurred the British to create the Royal Air Force, the world's first independent air service, and the London Air Defense Area. Except for some technological refinements, notably radar, it was essentially the same air defense system that was to serve Britain so well in World War II." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very light edge wear, very light rubbing with a few tiny scuffs, soft corner creases on front cover, minor soiling.

Macdonald, London, 1958, first edition.
63 pp, small 8vo (7 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs. "There is hardly a more remarkable period in modern British politics, or in the history of the press, than those years when the big newspaper lords determined the attitude of governments and even the most important decisions. Viscounts Northcliffe and Rothermere, Barons Riddell and Dalziel are dead. Baron Beaverbrook, who was a factor in major decisions in the first and second world wars, is still active, and s t i l l a power in Britain. 331 pp, square large 8vo (9 1/4" H x 9 1/4" D). B&w and colour illustrations. "Osgoode Hall is a national monument and one of Canada's architectural treasures. Of the many public buildings erected in pre-Confederation Canada, it best encapsulates the diverse stylistic forces that shaped public buildings of its era. The gated lawns, the grandly Venetian rotunda, the ornate courtroom, the portrait-lined walls, and the stained-glass windows evoke a venerable dignity to which few Canadian institutions can aspire. It has been the seat of the Law Society of Upper Canada since 1832 and of several of the Superior Courts of the province for almost as long. It has become a symbol of the legal tradition, not only in Ontario, but throughout Canada and beyond." Small gift notation on verso of free front endpaper. New York Penguin 2004 1594200300 / 9781594200304 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
488 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w map, plates. "Charles Stewart Henry Vane-Tempest-Stewart, the 7th Marquess of Londonderry, was born to power and command. Scion of one of Britain's most aristocratic families, cousin of Churchill and confidant of the king, owner of vast coal fields and landed estates, married to the doyenne of London's social scene, Londonderry was an ornament to his class, the 0.1 percent of the population who still owned 30 percent of England's wealth as late as 1930. But history has not been kind to 'Charley', as the king called him, because, in his own words, he 'backed the wrong horse', and a very dark horse indeed: Adolf Hitler and his Nazi party. Londonderry was hardly the only British aristocrat to do so, but he was the only cabinet member to do so, and it ruined him. In a final irony, his grand London house was bombed by the German Luftwaffe in the blitz. Ian Keshaw is not out to rehabilitate Lord Londonderry but to understand him and to expose why he was made a scapegoat for views that were much more widely held than anyone now likes to think." Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine.
