THE HIGH WORLD., Bemelmans, Ludwig.
1 Bemelmans, Ludwig. THE HIGH WORLD.
New York Harper & Brothers 1954 Hard Cover Very Good - Good- Ludwig Bemelmans.
113 pp, 9 1/4" H. Orange/brown cloth with white lettering on spine, blue illustration on front board. Blue & white pictorial endpapers, b&w drawings, colour plates. By the author/illustrator of the Madeline books. "High in the mountains of the Austrian Tyrol lived the Amrainer family. They lived in a cabin wedged in among the boulders, and their life was simple and happy. But one day the Amrainers' peaceful existence was disrupted. They had gone down to the little village to spend Christmas with their relatives, the Maybocks, who kept the inn - but as the two families were sitting down to enjoy their goose dinner, an imposing-looking gentleman arrived and began demanding their attention and ordering them about. Before many days the Amrainers learned why the official had come to the little village and they realized that his mission would destroy the tranquillity of their lives. It took a near catastrophe to make the Oberministerialrat change, but change for the better he did - his heart became warm and even the expression on his face changed - and once a man starts to have love for his fellow creatures and does good, he can but continue to do so." "The incidents revolving around the avalanche in (this book) are true and are based on an account of it told to Mr. Bemelmans by an officer of the Tyrolean Gendarmerie who took part in the rescue." Small Christmas gift inscription on verso of front free endpaper, light browning on inside hinges, light toning in margins of pages, slight fading to colour on spine and at board edges, very small worn area at top of spine, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE YOUNG SURVEYOR., Knox, Olive.
3 Knox, Olive. THE YOUNG SURVEYOR.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1967 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good+ Good+
164 pp, 8vo (8 1/4" H). Map endpapers. "What boy or girl wouldn't like the adventure of surveying in the Rockies when pack-mules, gold miners, and railway surveyors followed trails known only to the Indians? Bruce, the greenhorn from San Francisco, and Josette, the French girl from Edmonton, and her half-brother Mike had that exciting experience when they accompanied Edward Jarvis on his Canadian Pacific Railway surveys in 1874-1875. During the summer the two boys endured the hardships and adventures of an exploratory survey from Kamloops to Tete Jaune Cache, then an instrumental survey along the North Fraser River to Fort George. A rock slide, plunge into a treacherous river, forest fire, cougar attack, snow avalanche and losing the trail are some of the dramatic events in this book for both boys and girls. That was the life of the first Canadian Pacific surveyors, who pioneered the trail-finding so that the Atlantic could be linked to the Pacific with steel." Minor soiling at top of front hinge. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling, several small closed tears with creases, a few tiny chips, light foxing at top of rear flap, a few tiny light foxing marks along top edge, light dye stain at top inside edge of rear panel, very light rubbing on rear panel.

NORWEGIAN LIFE AND LANDSCAPE., Martin, Anthony.
4 Martin, Anthony. NORWEGIAN LIFE AND LANDSCAPE.
Elek, London, 1952, first edition.
167 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w plates. "This book sketches the historical experiences, the cultural and environmental influences which have made national characteristics and form the basis of policies in home and foreign affairs. Fierce patriotism and stubborn loyalties to friends and traditions are perhaps to be expected in a people who have discovered how to live well in their inordinately long country extending far beyond the Arctic Circle a n d s l a s h ed into a crazy pattern by glaciers, mountains and fjords. Democratic institutions, the huge merchant fleet, the midnight sun, the cod fisheries of Lofoten, Hanseatic Bergen, the growing pains of the capital of Oslo, the creation o f a ne w l an gu ag e by Parliamentary decree and especially the long associations with the English across the Northern Sea, form part of the picture. A fascinating folk and a very beautiful country - the two cannot be separated...." Boards are s li gh tly c url ed at for e- edges, very light browning to edges of textblock, foxing on top of textblock, tiny foxing marks on bottom of textblock, faint foxing on boards and on inside hinges, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, minor edge wea r. Du st j ack et h as lig ht e dge wear wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, browning on spine and flap-folds, scattered light foxing marks - mainly on inside of spine, minor soiling.
