BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS., Featherstone, Donald.
4 Featherstone, Donald. BRIDGES OF BATTLE: FAMOUS BATTLEFIELD ACTIONS AT BRIDGES AND RIVER CROSSINGS.
London Arms and Armour 1998 1854094491 / 9781854094490 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
256 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w plates. "From more than 2,000 years of military history, (the author) has selected some one hundred examples of battles centred on river crossings. They range in size fom small-scale actions such as the battle for Powick Bridge in the early months of the English Civil War to massive, army-scale operations including the final crossing of the Rhine at Remagen during the Second World War. One of the biggest battles during the Napoleonic Wars - indeed, the biggest battle to that date with more than 300,000 men in combat - was fought across the Danube in 1809, culminating in the battle of Wagram. Later, as Napoleon's fortunes began to ebb, there took place the desperate and tragic crossing of the Berezina in 1812 when Napoleon's depleted army, retreating from Moscow, fought to cross the freezing river to escape the pursuing and encirling Russians and the hell of a Russian winter. The American Civil War also provides many examples of battles for river crossings, such as First Bull Run, the opening engagement of the war, the fight for Burnside's Bridge at Antietam and the Battle of the Big Black River during the riverine campaign for Vicksburg. Other, often lesser-known, actions are also to be found in this book, including tales of desperate courage from the Indian Mutiny and other British colonial wars. The range of contributions, including expert analyses and eyewitness accounts often enables the reader to see both sides of the story - those of the defender and the attacker - and to compare battles fought in similar circumstances, but with very different weapons, across the centuries." A few faint scuffs on the front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wrinkling, one small edge tear archivally taped.

Tales of an entire squadron of war-birds from 1942 still sitting on the ice in Greenland were passed from one pilot to another. On a jaunt to the far north in 1980, two pilots from Atlanta, Georgia, heard the story and decided to look for the lost planes. What began as casual curiosity soon became a twelve-year adventure and a multimillion-dollar obsession. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY., McDonough, James Lee.
11 McDonough, James Lee. CHATTANOOGA - A DEATH GRIP ON THE CONFEDERACY.
Knoxville University of Tennessee Press 1984 0870494252 / 9780870494253 Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
298 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "In the wake of the bloodshed at Chickamauga, the struggle for Chattanooga became a decisive engagement of the Civil War. McDonough reconstructs the siege and battles as they appeared to both Rebels and Yankees, giving the reader a front-row seat at one of the major dramas in American history. The tale culminates in the complex bid for Missionary Ridge, which ended with the collapse of the Confederate line at its center. Reversing their situation in one final, dramatic hour, Union forces emerged victorious. The Rebels forfeited the advantage offered by the triumph of Chickamauga and now found the tables turned. With Chattanooga in their grasp, the Federals stood in a position to carry the fight deep into the South. The river and railroads both made the city important as a natural passageway that provided the Union with a staging base for military operations. The Rebels, on the other hand, found their railway communications crippled. The Confederacy had earlier been split along the Mississippi River; now it was to be severed by a second line that passed from Nashville to Atlanta via Chattanooga." Very light edge wear, small bump at top edge of front board, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.

12 Nevins, Allan. THE WAR FOR THE UNION. VOLUME IV: THE ORGANIZED WAR TO VICTORY, 1864-1865.
Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1971, book club reprint.
448 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. "Here we have the story of th slow and sometimes agaonizing progress of the Union armies to victory. Grant and Sherman and Lincoln dominate. On the political front, Linc oln is reelected and the Union becomes even more solidly organized; on the military front, Grant sets his bulldog teeth in the neck of his great adversary Lee, and Sherman cuts a swath of desolation through the richest parts of the South. Vi c t o r y w hen it comes at Appomattox, is a quiet victory, but almost at once the murder of President Lincoln and the succession of President Andrew Johnson present the nation with new problems as terrible if not as immediate as the battles. The wo rk c lo se s w ith an account of the demobilization of the armies and the nation's return to the pursuits of peace which, despite the war, are seen to have widened in scope and to be filled with new opportunities." 272 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps/battle plans, photographs, reproductions. "The question 'What if the South had won the Civil War?' is one that has long fascinated and intrigued historians and enthusiasts of Americ an history. (This book) explores that very question, revealing exactly how history could have been dramatically altered forever. Each chapter, written by a leading military historian, plays out a series of convincing scenarios, based on real battles, actions and characters, where at points of decision a different choice or minor incident sets in motion an entirely new train of events which could ultimately have led to a Confederate victory. What if Sherman had been stalled outside Atlanta, or Lincoln had lost the crucial 1864 election? Or if Stuart's Cavalry at Gettysburg had arrived in time to give Lee the freedom of operation he lacked in reality? These and many more thought-provoking questions are examined against the dramatic and colourful backdrop of this critical and bloody era of American history."
