FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME., D'Este, Carlo.
7 D'Este, Carlo. FATAL DECISION: ANZIO AND THE BATTLE FOR ROME.
HarperCollins, New York, 1991, book club edition.
566 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "By taking advantage of Allied command of the sea and air to effect complete surprise, infantry and armored forces landing at Anzio on January 22 were expected to secure a beachhead and then push inland to cut the two main highways and railroads supplying the German armies to the south, either trapping and annihilating them or forcing them to withdraw north and opening the way to R o m e . S u c h was the plan. What really happened, brilliantly told by Carlo D'Este, was a near disaster for the Allies and the unfortunate soldiers involved. Doomed by uncertain leadership at the highest levels, including Churchill's pressure an d me dd l in g, G en eral Sir Harold Alexander's lack of firm directives, and General Mark Clark's unwillingness to risk defeat or push a tired General John Lucas, the Anzio beachhead became a death trap, with Allied troops forced to fight for the ir li ves f o r f ive dr ead ful months in a throwback to the trench warfare of World War I. Even the enventual Allied victory, when the Germans finally gave way in May 1944, was tarnished by Clark's ambition to be first in Rome instead of a ttem pti ng t o cu t o ff and des troy or capture fleeing German troops...." 8 Darby, William O. and Baumer, William H. WE LED THE WAY: DARBY'S RANGERS.
Presidio, San Rafael, California, 1980.
198 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0891410821 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The heroism of William Darby and his Rangers in World War II has become legend. Experts at amphibious landings, night attacks, and clos e combat, they led the assaulting troops in the initial North Africa landings, fought in Tunisia, landed through concentrated hell at Gela, and were in on the final kill at Messina. At Sorrento they stood off forces that outnumbered them by a t l e a s t eight to one, and they spearheaded the desperate struggle at Anzio. This is Darby's own story of those climactic days, as dictated, just a few months before his death, to his friend General William H. Baumer. Baumer has added backgr ou nd in fo rm at ion about the war and on Darby's life, plus a summary of the exploits of other Ranger units. Darby was a combat leader in the highest tradition of the United States Army - a forceful, charismatic man who inspired loyalty and in t urn ga v e l oya lty to his troops. He refused battlefield promotions three times in order to stay with his Rangers. During his colorful and brilliant career, he received ten high military decorations, and was posthumously promoted to brigadier gen eral ." New York Harper & Row 1987 0060158123 / 9780060158125 Book Club (BCE/BOMC) Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
998 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Map endpapers. B&w maps. "World War II eventually involved every major power in the world, and before it was over some fifty million people lost their lives. (This) is a complete political and military history of World War II. Written with the pace and sweep of a fine novel, it makes the period, its major leaders, and the events not only comprehensible but also alive and real. Robert Leckie begins his book with the punitive treaty of Versailles and the fumbling efforts of the Western democracies to cope with the rise of Mussolini and Hitler. He draws vivid profiles of the political leaders, generals, and admirals who created and fought the war; describes the battles; analyzes the military strategy; considers the economic and political factors; and tells of the daily lives of those who were engaged on the far-flung fronts and those who endured at home. Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, MacArthur, Tojo, Eisenhower, Montgomery, Rommel and many other fascinating individuals become live protagonists on the stage sets of such dramatic sites as Stalingrad, Tobruk, Guadalcanal, Dunkirk, Leningrad, Monte Cassino, Midway, Omaha Beach, and Iwo Jima. Readers of all ages will find Leckie's powerful, action-packed narrative both compelling and comprehensive, and they will gain fascinating insights into one of the greatest and most awful events in human history." Minor browning on top of text block, minor soiling on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light fading to spine color, light edge wear, a few tiny edge tears - one with crease and taped, minor browning at edges.

227 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps. "(Macksey's) detailed research, in England and in America, into the development of Amphibious Raiding Forces, presents a fascinating and unrevealed insight into the extraordinarily haphazard way in which this form of irregular warfare evolved on both sides of the Atlantic. In the background stand the politicians, who show little consistency of purpose or harmony of intent; nearer the foreground senior officers reveal inter-Service rivalry and no little degree of personal animosity, as much in London as in Washington. Between them, and the brave men to whom this book is a tribute, and whose exploits are retold in their after-action reports, stood innumerable problems which the author examines in detail: inadequate supplies, lack of information about weather, beaches and tides and, most vitally, about the opposition likely to be encountered, which caused many planned raids to be stillborn and many others to end in disaster." Large wrinkle/crease at top corner of front board - board is still sound, very light wrinkling at top/ bottom of spine, remainder dot on bottom of textblock/rear board, minor rubbing and soiling. Dust jacket has Stoddart as publisher's name, has light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, light rubbing, tiny dint on rear hinge, soft crease at bottom of front hinge.

"The Normandy Landings, the largest amphibious operation the world has ever seen, marked 'the beginning of the end of the Second World War'. Russell Miller's superb book offers a definitive account of 'being alive in 1944, being young, and being at war'. Letters, diaries, memos and dozens of interviews with veterans from all sides recreate the deception plans and dry runs, the desperate German wait behind the Atlan t i c W a ll, the disagreements between Allies, the ghastly ordeal of Omaha Beach, Resistance sabotage operations and the first day of battle. Throughout, Russell Miller has enticed from his old soldiers not only astonishingly vivid memories of ev en ts b u t th eir feelings as participants. Here, he writes, we find 'hysteria and horror interspersed with flashes of heroism and humour - these are the true voices of D-Day'." 20 Mitcham, Samuel W., Jr., and von Stauffenberg, Friedrich. THE BATTLE OF SICILY.
New York Orion 1991 0517575256 / 9780517575253 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good + Very Good
367 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "....the story of Germany's 'Dunkirk' - a successful evacuation that allowed forty thousand troops to escape to Italy, where they later fought the Allies to a bloody stalemate....the Allies lost a significant opportunity in Sicily when a one-armed German general, Hans Valentin Hube, the commander of the XIV Panzer Corps, stepped in to mount a brilliant strategic defense. With only four divisions, he successfully tied down two Allied armies, holding off the invaders for thirty-eight crucial days and then escaping with nearly his entire command. Meanwhile, the Nazis were able to occupy Italy - whose government had only recently capitulated - thereby dooming the Allies to a prolonged and fierce battle of attrition up the Italian peninsula. The authors recount the campaign from the point of view of the Axis strategy - something no English-language book has ever done - and argue persuasively that the Allies wasted a chance for a total victory that might well have shortened the war." Book is very slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very slight fading to spine color, minor rubbing.
