5 Ashe, Geoffrey. FROM CAESAR TO ARTHUR.
London Collins 1960 First Edition Hard Cover Good+ Good-
320 p, 8 1/2" H. "(A) study of the life and career of the historical King Arthur in so far as it can be traced through early documents and remains. (The author) begins with the decay of Roman power and its slow disappearance from Britain, while invasion, anarchy and warring small kingdoms take its place. Then comes a reversal of fortune without parallel in the dissolving Empire, when a western Christian military chieftain stems the Saxon tide and imposes a long truce. In this unique recovery, it is suggested, lies a previously unnoticed clue to the whole development of the British monarchy. The kingdom finally created by Alfred the Great and his successors turns out to have been decisively affected by the earlier achievement of Arthur and the failure of the first Saxon attempt at conquest. Piecing together his fragments of history to form the most vivid possible whole, Mr. Ashe explains how the great tradition of Arthur flowed into the Arthurian Legend, and shows how that legend, fantastic and romantic as it is, nevertheless embodies a profound historical insight." Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, moderate browning to edges of text block. Dust jacket has light to moderate edge wear/wrinkling, a few tiny and small edge tears, a few tiny scuffs on spine, minor edge browning, protected in a mylar sleeve.

Baltzly was a talented photographer working in the Montreal studio of William Notman. His trip to British Columbia was made with a party sent out by the Geological Survey of Canada to examine the geology along one of the proposed routes for the Canadian Pacific Railway - the North Thompson River through the Yellowhead Pass. Although a few of Baltzly's photographs have appeared in print, they have never been examined as a body. His journal, which appeared in 'The Gazette' of Montreal in 1872, is one of the very few written records left by Canadian photographers of the (19th) century. JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR., Buchan, William. (John Buchan).
12 Buchan, William. (John Buchan). JOHN BUCHAN: A MEMOIR.
Toronto Griffin House 1982 887601081 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
272 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w photographs. "John Buchan was a man of remarkably diverse achievements: writer, lawyer, politician, soldier, scholar and, finally, Governor-General of Canada. He was the friend of Roosevelt and of George V, of Henry James and T.E. Lawrence; indeed, there was scarcely a prominent figure of the twenties and thirties whom he did not know. His contemporaries are among the most successful men of their day; his novels, still widely read, dominated the market between the wars; his histories and biographies are much admired; his achievements in public office demonstrate a gift for government and a visionary wisdom. Yet through all his work there runs a thread spun of the simple beliefs by which he stood - courage, truth, loyalty, honour, compassion. Such a creed made him kindly, gentle and much loved; his untimely death provoked an enviable outburst of sorrow and sense of loss. To his publ ic, however, and to succeeding generations, he is an enigma, often mistakenly accused of attitudes he never held. This book, by his son, shows John Buchan as he appeared to his family and close friends, an appealing and intimate portrait of a man whose fame rests - perhaps wrongly - on his skill as a novelist. Drawn from the author's own memories, and from privileged and unpublished sources, this is an elegant study of the private face behind the public mask, in the light of an extraordinary career." Tiny soiling speck on top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinking, a few tiny specks of soiling on inside, very slight fading to spine colour.

13 Burton, G. Allan. A STORE OF MEMORIES.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1986 0771017928 / 9780771017926 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
330 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "With warmth, wry wit, and surprising candour, G. Allan Burton relates the big and small incidents in his life, sometimes with nostalgia, sometimes with bite. His story starts in Toronto's exclusive Rosedale district, where, as a child, he discovered the twin passions of horse-riding and watercolour painting, passions that became the dual themes of his life. The first took him into the Governor General's Horse Guards, into the Allied Forces' dangerous campaign in Italy during World War II, and into a life-long love of fox hunting. The second took him into architecture and interior design and then into Simpsons where he worked his way from stockboy to chairman of the company. Throughout his business career, he kept a journal in which he recorded the critical events of Simpsons growth - the formation of Simpsons-Sears, the opening of new stores, and the innovative development of shopping malls in Ontario and Quebec, the frustrations of economic recession, and finally the explosion of the 'store wars' in 1979 where the Hudson's Bay Company and Sears, Roebuck of Chicago battled for control of this major Canadian company." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has one tiny tear with crease - archivally taped, a few areas of light edge wrinkling, minor edge wear, very light rubbing.

London Bison 1990 0861246209 / 9780861246205 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
192 pp, folio (14 1/2" H). "Created, ordered and led by Hitler, the state apparatus of Nazi Germany rigorously controlled all aspects of life in the Third Reich from cradle to grave. To maintain his iron grip on the German people through the ministries of his dictatorial government, Hitler surrounded himself with a small clique of fanatical, devoted acolytes. Men such as Heinrich Himmler, the much-feared chief of the Waffen-SS and organiser of the Holocaust, and Hermann Goering, the bombastic head of the Luftwaffe, wielded enormous power and held the fate of millions in their corrupt hands. (This book) tells the inside story of the Third Reich, looking at the personalities, roles and rivalries of Hitler's closest associates: Joseph Goebbels, the astute propaganda minister; Joachim von Ribbentrop, the Reich's chief diplomat; Rudolph Hess, Hitler's disgraced deputy; Albert Speer, the manager of the Reich's economy; Baldur von Schirach, the fanatic who moulded the thoughts of the youth of Germany; Alfred Rosenberg, the man who created the philosophical framework for the ideology of Nazisim; Martin Bormann, Hitler's enigmatic advisor; and Eva Braun, Hitler's mistress. Written by ( two) noted Dutch historians, (it) reveals the truth behind the fascade of the Third Reich and is an important contribution to the literature of the Nazi era. Illustrated with 300 photographs, many in colour, this book is a must for any student of the rise and fall of the Third Reich and its leaders." Each nation has made its own glowing tapestry of martial glory and national heroes out ot this mighty encounter. 17 Clark, Andrew. A KEEN SOLDIER: THE EXECUTION OF SECOND WORLD WAR PRIVATE HAROLD PRINGLE.
Toronto Alfred A. Knopf 2002 067697354X / 9780676973549 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Near Fine
342 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "Harold Pringle was underage when the Second World War broke out, eager to leave quiet Flinton, Ontario, to serve by his father's side. But few who volunteered to fight 'the good fight' realized what horror lay ahead; soon both young Harold and his father were cracking under the strain. His father was sent home; Harold Pringle found himself in Italy, fighting on the bloody 'Hitler Line'. Shellshocked, this broken soldier embarked on a tragic, final course: desertion, debauchery in the streets of Rome and a suspect accusation of murder. His appeal was reviewed by the highest levels of government, right up to Prime Minister King. But two months after the official end of the war, Private Pringle was put to death - the only soldier the Canadians had executed since the First World War. His own countrymen carried out the orders, forbidden to go home before completing this last grotesque assignment. The Pringle file was closed and stayed that way for fifty years - until Andrew Clark uncovered it and began a two-year investigative search. (This) is a true-life military detective story that shows another side of what many consider our proudest military campaign. Andrew Clark examines the fallout of a crisis that disfigured our national conscience and continues to raise questions about the ethics of war." Minor wrinkle at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling.

HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS., Cokinos, Christopher.
18 Cokinos, Christopher. HOPE IS THE THING WITH FEATHERS: A PERSONAL CHRONICLE OF VANISHED BIRDS.
New York Jeremy P. Tarcher / Putnam 2000 1585420069 / 9781585420063 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
359 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "There was a time when massive flocks of Passenger Pigeons blotted out the sun, and bright green Carolina Parakeets were so numerous that they looked, according to an early American pioneer, 'like an atmosphere of gems.' But these birds - as well as the Labrador Duck, the Ivory-billed Woodpecker, the Heath Hen, and the Great Auk - now live only as tantalizing but hazy legends. Driven by a desire to understand how and why this came to be, (the author) embarked on ten years of extraordinary detective work. Traveling from Bird Rock in the Gulf of St. Lawrence to Louisiana's tangled bayous in search of those who stalked these birds and those who tried to save them, he discovered strange stories and glorious quests, tales of scientific heroism and political stupidity, of inconceivable apathy and equally astonishing personal devotion. A compelling blend of science, history, politics, and memoir, (this) is a richly detailed and ultimately uplifting narrative of dedication, discovery, and wonder." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkle at top of rear panel.
