2 Brockhouse, Robert. THE ROYAL ALEXANDRA THEATRE: A CELEBRATION OF 100 YEARS.
Toronto McArthur 2007 155278648X / 9781552786482 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+ Edward Burtynsky, photographer.
346 pp, 11 1/4" H. Profusely illustrated in colour, b&w and sepiatone with photographs/reproductions. "It was one of those grand civic gestures so loved by the aristocracy of the Gilded Age: a gift to Toronto meant to call the world's attention to its blossoming as a great city. The giver was Cawthra Mulock, 'the boy millionaire', one of the wealthiest men in Canada. The gift was the Royal Alexandra, a magnificent new theatre built - with no regard to cost - to equal the most splendid houses of London, Paris and New York. It was to be the lodestar of North American theatres, attracting the finest performers and the very best in dramatic art to a city that still smarted under the nickname 'Hogtown'. If Cawthra Mulock had known what obstacles lay in the way, he might never have broken ground. He could not have foreseen the cut-throat rivals who would seek to bankrupt him; nor the two World Wars; nor the coming of the movies, radio and television; nor the Great Depression that would close every other theatre in the country. This book tells the story of a Canadian national landmark and beloved Toronto institution, and of the remarkable, dogged and devoted champions - from Mulock to Mirvish - who have kept it alive, thriving and triumphant over 100 years." Small crease at top edge of pages 193 to 204., light waviness to edges og text block, very light wrinking at bottom of spine. Dust jacket very minor edge wrinkling, very minor rubbing, very soft wrinkle on rear panel.

3 Clay, Catrine. KING, KAISER, TSAR: THREE ROYAL COUSINS WHO LED THE WORLD TO WAR.
London John Murray 2007 0719565375 / 9780719565373 Soft Cover Very Good
416 pp, 7 3/4" H. B&w photographs. "The King, the Kaiser and the Tsar - George V, Wilhelm II and Nicholas II - were close cousins who knew each other as Georgie, Willy and Nicky. Between them they ruled half the world. Their lives had overlapped since childhood, in palaces of unimaginable opulence, surrounded by flattery and political intrigue. They saw themselves as a trade union of kings, standing firm against Socialism, Republicanism and revolution. But behind the friendliness lurked quarrels and, as the First World War loomed, they turned on each other. Ultimately, when Nicholas II begged for exile in the midst of Russia's revolution, his cousins denied him. This compelling tale of privilege, power and political machination explores whether their blunders caused the lead-up to war and the end of autocratic monarchy." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - book is very slightly cocked, spine has light creases and is slightly concave.

London Century 2011 1846058139 / 9781846058134 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
311 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). B&w illustrations. "October 17, 1898, en route to Paris's Gare du Nord station, the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland's jewels were stolen from her train carriage. More than forty pieces, worth nearly 2 million Pounds today, disappeared that night, and the perpetrator along with them. It would become one of the most widely reported heists of the late Victorian era, but what no one knew was that the man who committed this most daring and well-planned theft had already committed nine almost identical crimes. A man who wore bespoke suits and handmade shoes; who used a dozen pseudonyms to dust over his tracks; who belonged to three smart London clubs and lived in the luxury of West End hotels; whose staple diet was champagne and whisky; who was pursued by London's top detectives for five and a half years and - by their own admission - proved smarter than them. A man who fell so much in love with a woman that he would steal and lie for her, only to be betrayed by her." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling.

THE ROYAL VICTORIANS: A PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY., Judd, Denis.
11 Judd, Denis. THE ROYAL VICTORIANS: A PICTORIAL BIOGRAPHY.
New York St. Martin's 1975 Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good -
207 pp, large 8vo (9 11/16" H). "(T)ells the public and private story of an unusual 'rake's progress'. For the first sixty years of his life Edward had fought against respectability and - in so doing - confirmed the low opinion of him held by his mother, Queen Victoria. Yet, by the time of his death in 1910 only nine years after succeeding to the throne, he had become the symbol of security to a society which was uncertain and deeply divided within itself. Kept in ignorance of State affairs by his mother, Edward spent his life as Prince of Wales pursuing pleasure and freely indulging his passions for the chase. Horses, yachts, cars and spas were among his favorite pastimes, while scandalous liaisons with 'professional beauties' nearly proved his undoing. Succinctly and entertainingly, with the aid of 250 photographs, prints and drawings, (the author) describes the life and reign of one of England's most flamboyant kings. In private life Edward VII was a devoted husband to Alexandra and an excellent father to their children (the future George V called him 'my best friend and the best of fathers'), and once he was in office his conviviality and natural gift for diplomacy proved invaluable in ending Britain's policy of 'splendid isolation'. It was only fitting that he should give his name to an era." Previous owner's small Christmas notation, place, date and signature on free front endpaper along with a faint erased pencil mark; light to moderate edge wear, a few tiny tears at top/bottom of spine along with light wear. Dust jacket has light wear/tiny tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small sticker removal marks on front flap, light fading to colour on panels, some areas of light edge wrinkling, light rubbing.

13 McDowell, Colin. A HUNDRED YEARS OF ROYAL STYLE.
Muller, Blond & White, London, 1985, first edition.
192 pp, small 4to (10 1/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0584110715 Profusely illustrated in colour and b&w with photographs, drawings, reproductions. "(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare know ledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, i n d e ed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designe rs , su ppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a disti nct a nd individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen....but who, it can be argu ed, was un suitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today." Light fading to cloth - 1 1/4" st rip down hin ge side of front board, light waviness to edges of text block; place, date and initials in ink on half-title page. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, heavy fading to spine color - lettering is still vis ible, crea se down centre of spine, light rubbing with a few light line indentations. 14 Morton, Andrew. INSIDE KENSINGTON PALACE.
Michael O'Mara, London, 1987.
176 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0948397969 B&w photographs. "Kensington Palace, for years a forgotten semi-derelict royal residence described by Edward VII as an 'aunt heap', is today the decorous London home of some of the most famous members of the royal family. Among its inmates are the charismatic royal headline makers, the Prince and Princess of Wales; the stylish and ambitious Princess Michael of Kent; the more sombre and sober Duke and Duchess o f G l o u c e ster; and Princess Margaret, once, like her younger female relatives, considered fair game by the world's press but now largely ignored by the media and enjoying a quiet and very comfortable life. (This book) takes the general public - no rm al ly o nl y allowed access to the State Apartments - on a tour of discovery into the private residences of four royal households, revealing the intimate and formerly secret details of their day-to-day lives. We learn of an old teddy bea r t h at eve ry nig ht is tucked up into the bed of England's next monarch; of the Princess who likes to ride in her chauffeur-driven car with the interior lights on so she can be clearly seen by the 'peasants' in the street; and of the teetotal Duk e wh o ins ured hi s we ddi ng anniversary celebrations against a cancellation by Britain's possible defeat in the Falklands War. (It) is about royalty behind closed doors. (The author) lets us see how the royals behave when they think the world isn't l ooki ng. He p ortra ys t hes e royal super-stars as human beings who have the same sort of loves and hates, jealousies and fears as the rest of us." Minor edge rubbing on boards, small scuff at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has been price cl ipped , ha s min or edg e wri nkli ng. Very Good+/Very Good+

"The Royal Mews behind Buckingham Palace is the department of the Royal Household responsible for the horse-drawn and motor travel arrangements of Her Majesty the Queen and members of the Royal Family. Its buildings form a hidden village of stables, workshops, homes, offices and garages, and the Mews community, despite modernisation, flourishes on customs and traditions that have been handed down over nine reigns. The Queen's regular use of horses and carriages has provided essential patronage for the skills of the craftsmen who also work there and are involved in their upkeep. The international media co v e r a g e t hat is given to many domestic and ceremonial occasions throughout the Royal year means that Her Majesty's carriages and cars are very much in the public eye. But whether seen on the streets, the television screen or the printed page, t he re i s li t tl e time for the spectator to absorb the wealth of historic detail that is on view in any royal procession. In their new book, Mary Stewart-Wilson and David Cripps present an unrivalled account of the carriages, horses, harness, li ver y a nd ca rs of th e Royal Mews. THE DOWAGER EMPRESS., Tisdall, E.E.P.

Stanley Paul, London, 1957, first edition.
271 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates and family tree. "Princess Dagmar of Denmark was Queen Alexandra's favourite sister, a lovely girl destined to become the consort of Russia's all-powerful Tsar Alexander III. Her path to the Imperial throne began dramatically, for her fiance, the Tsarevitch Nicholas, was taken suddenly ill, and on his death-bed begged her to marry his brother, Alexander. The latter was not an attractive man, but to Dagmar that dying wish was a c ommand. As the Empress Marie Fedorovna, she transformed her uncouth husband into a great and popular ruler; as the Dowager Empress, her influence over Nicholas II, the last Tsar, was for long a restraining factor in a turbulent and unhappy c o u n t r y . Had she triumphed in the final bitter strugle for power with the Tsarina and Rasputin, the tragic history of the Romanoffs, of Russia, and of the world might have been very different. A lively and detailed study of a compelling p e rs on al it y.
