8 Bernard, Andre; Leveille, Jacques; Lord, Guy. PROFILE: CALGARY. THE POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURES OF THE METROPOLITAN REGION OF CALGARY.
Ottawa Ministry of State for Urban Affairs 1975 Soft Cover Very Good
131 pp, 11 5/8" H. 10 b&w illustrations (charts, maps). "The policy of annexation pursued by the City of Calgary since the 1960s has created a well integrated metropolitan region. At the same time, by extending its authority over surrounding municipalities, the City has also provided for its own growth requirements. Although officially part of the Calgary Regional Planning Commission, Calgary has nevertheless managed to maintain the degree of autonomy necessary to determine its own pattern of urban development. Attention thus tends to be focussed on the complex and detailed organization of political and administrative structures within the City itself - especially where land use planning is concerned." 10 Blower, James. Foreword by Grant MacEwan. GOLD RUSH: A PICTORIAL LOOK AT THE PART EDMONTON PLAYED IN THE GOLD ERA OF THE 1890s.
Toronto Ryerson Press 1971 007092919X / 9780070929197 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good - Very Good
199 pp, oblong (8 3/4" H x 10 5/8" D). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "By 1898 all roads led to the Klondike. One such road was to pass through the tiny Edmonton community, and Edmonton was never to be the same again. As the gateway and principal outfitting centre to one of the most popular - albeit treacherous - overland trails to the Yukon gold fields, Edmonton, then only 1500 strong, found itself playing host to over 2000 rough and hearty Klondikers. Within two years the town population doubled, local merchants prospered, business boomed. They were colourful times, not to be missed, and James Blower recounts them fondly. He salutes those boisterous, hopeful men equipped with pack horses, ox teams or dog sleds, embarking on a wild journey of more than 1600 miles through forests, swamps, perilous rivers and lakes. Parties of men never heard from again - did they strike it rich in the gold fields or were they victims of drowning, scurvey, starvation? Fortunately, Edmonton boasted two excellent photographers during the Klondike days - W.C. Mathers and Ernest Brown - who recorded on film this extraordinary period in history. Their photographs, most of which have never been published before, represent the greater part of this book." Faint thin red pen mark and scattered tiny stains on top of text block. Dust jacket has minor efge wrinking, two very small edge tears archivally taped, an areas of a four tiny scuffs on front panel, very light soiling on rear panel.

427 pp, 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Through war, depression, and social upheaval, the first half of the twentieth century was a period of unprecedented turbulence in Canada. In this lively and perhaps contentious survey, (the authors) explore the political and economic forces that shaped this era of change. Beginning at the turn of the century, they consider the status of Canada in the empire and the world, the burgeoning growth of its economy, and the development of social and labour problems, up to the eruption of war in 1914. They discuss the political currents running through Canada during two wars, the interwar economic boom and depression, and the plans for post-war reconstruction, and assess the impact of these and other events on Canada's political, economic, social, and cultural institutions." 12 Brimelow, Peter. THE PATRIOT GAME: NATIONAL DREAMS & POLITICAL REALITIES.
Toronto Key Porter 1986 1550130013 / 9781550130010 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
310 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A)rgues that Canada ought to be a second Switzerland, with a living standard actually higher than that of the U.S. But in fact it is embroiled in a tangle of regional and linguistic quarrels, mainipulated by both the Liberals and their Mulroney Tory imitators, and an elite in Ottawa that truly represents neither Anglophones nor Francophones. 'The Patriot Games' offers an unconventional view of Canada that will shatter many myths. Brimelow endorses the argument of Goldwin Smith's 1891 classic 'Canada and the Canadian Question' that our country is 'rich by nature, poor by policy'. He demonstrates that this is a direct consequence of fatally-flawed political institutions, which have created divisive polices like bilingualism and Canadian Nationalism. He shows that, paradoxically, English Canada is the dispossessed and colonized nation within a weakening Confederation. In a provocative portrait of the Trudeau era, he describes how the Liberals imposed an artificial bilingualism policy on an unsuspecting country, alienating the West and having little effect in Quebec. (This book) challenges us to come to terms with what being a Canadian means." Minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, very tiny dent on front hinge..

13 Bruce, Jean. THE LAST BEST WEST.
Toronto Fitzhenry & Whiteside 1976 0889024014 / 9780889024014 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good Signed by Author
177 pp, 9 1/4" H. Signed by author on title page, under printed name. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "Between 1896 and 1914, the Canadian government carried out a vigorous programme in central Europe, Britain, and the United States to persuade people to immigrate to the Canadian west, 'The Last Best West'. Hundreds of thousands of prospective settlers from diverse and distinctive ethnic backgrounds responded, leading to an extraordinary mass migration which changed the face of Canada. This great campaign to populate the west is presented here by Jean Bruce, in a compelling and moving selection of more than 190 photographs of the period, together with short related texts. Her superb pictorial history gives a fine sense of scope and perspective to this vital period in the growth of Canada. We see all the paraphernalia of the government advertising campaign, the journey from the setllers' homelands, the first prairie homesteads, the development of western cities and industries and, above all, the people whose lives transformed - and were transformed by - the Canadian west." Very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very light edge wear, very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine.

14 Bryan, Liz. THE BUFFALO PEOPLE: PREHISTORIC ARCHAEOLOGY ON THE CANADIAN PLAINS.
Edmonton University of Alberta Press 1991 0888642210 / 9780888642219 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good
215 pp, 9" H. B&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings/diagrams. "The prehistoric nomadic inhabitants of Canada had no writing, no large settlements, and very little in the way of lasting material things. Before Europeans came to North America they had no guns, no horses, no hard metals. What clues we have come primarily from the work of archaeologists sifting through the buried evidence - little bits of stone and bone and pottery, refuse heaps and fire pits, ancient villages and burials, fingerprints and prehistoric blood. Yet theirs is a long and triumphant story of survival, a story that is even now just beginning to be told." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - very minor edge wear, two small minoe corner creases, very slight lean to spine.

204 pp, 8 5/8" H. B&w photographs. "Urged many times to write the story of his life, Mr. Robert Campbell, now in his eighty-eighth year, finally acceded to the request. The result is this very readable book of reminiscence, rich in humour and history, adventure and anecdote, told by a master storyteller. In a breezy and colloquial style the author tells of his experiences in and around Banff, of his political life, experiences in the army during World War I, and his encounters with important visitors in the Canadian Rockies. This is not only a fascinating story, but a valuable record of early days when the Rockies were just beginning to attract attention as a tourist centre for the world."
