"That Hitler preceded his declaration of war with a spate of lies, and has accompanied his every military and diplomatic action since 1939 with lies is known to most people, but few realize the extent and quality of his mendacity. BRAVO TWO ZERO., McNab, Andy.
3 McNab, Andy. BRAVO TWO ZERO.
Bantam, London, 1993, reprint.
374 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 059303421X Colour and b&w photographs, drawings. "On the night of 22 January 1991, at a remote airfield in Saudi Arabia, under cover of darkness and in conditions on utmost secrecy, ei ght members of the SAS regiment boarded a helicopter that was to infiltrate them deep behind enemy lines. Their mission, under the command of Sergeant Andy McNab, was to sever the underground communication link between Baghdad and northwest I r a q , a nd to seek and destroy mobile Scud launchers before Israel was provoked into entering the war. Their call-sign: Bravo Two-Zero. Each man laden with fifteen stone of equipment, they patrolled 20 km across flat desert to reach their objec ti ve a nd fi nd a hiding place before first light. Within days, their location was compromised. The Iraqis attacked with armour, and after a fierce firefight the patrol was forced to escape and evade on foot to the Syrian border, 120 km to the nor thw est . T hat first night, in pitch darkness and weather cold enough to freeze diesel fuel, they covered 85 km - farther than two marathons. In the desperate days that followed, though stricken by hypothermia and other injuries, the patrol ' went bal list ic '. Fo ur men were captured. Three died. Only one escaped. But in their wake lay 250 Iraqi dead and wounded. For Andy McNab and the other survivors, however, the worst ordeals were yet to come. Delivered to Baghdad, they were tort ured with a s ava gery and relentlessness for which not even their intensive SAS training had prepared them. This book is a breathtaking account of Special Forces soldiering in all its strength, ingenuity and aggression. It is also a chronic le of super human cou rage , end urance and dark humour in the face of overwhelming odds." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds. Very Good/Very Good

BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940., N/A
5 N/A BELGIUM: THE OFFICIAL ACCOUNT OF WHAT HAPPENED, 1939-1940.
Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs / Evans Brothers, London, n.d.
110 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. 4 b&w illustrations, 5 fold-out maps - collated. "The invasion of Belgium and the Netherlands in May 1940 will remain one of the outstanding events of the second Great War. This volume, issued by the Belgian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, sets forth the official record of these events and includes all the important documents relating to them, some of which have not been previously published. Germany tried, as in 1914, to shift the res p o n s i b i lity for her crime on to her victim. The papers here published show, however, that the precautions taken by Belgium against German aggression were fully justified by the information received by the Belgian Government. This informatio n wa s dr am at ic ally confirmed when a German plane which crash-landed on Belgian soil in January 1940 was found to contain the orders for the Luftwaffe's part in a large-scale invasion of Belgium. That documentary evidence is reproduced in these p age s. L ear nin g f rom her past experience, Belgium had been preparing from 1930, and even before, against the menace of a new German aggression. The documents here presented prove that this grave preoccupation never ceased to inspire her po lic y in th e ye ars prec edin g the conflict." Book is slightly cocked, has scattered tiny foxing marks on edges of text block - mainly on top edge, minor rubbing. Dust jacket has two large edge tears - archivally taped, browning to spine and at upp er ed ge, some area s of very light edge wrinkling, a few tiny soiling specks, soft crease down spine. DAVID AND MAX. BASED ON A BIZARRE AND TRAGIC INCIDENT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR., Simonds, Peter.
6 Simonds, Peter. DAVID AND MAX. BASED ON A BIZARRE AND TRAGIC INCIDENT OF THE SECOND WORLD WAR.
Aurora, Nashville, Tennessee, 1977.
265 pp + Appendix, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 876951744 "Conspiracy and intrigue surround this account of an actual World War II incident. The scene is Holland in the twilight of theThird Reich. In preparation for Hitl er's last attempt to achieve a military victory, or a negotiated peace, two young German corporals are sent behind enemy lines to chart the bearing strength of the soil for the Panzer's path to Antwerp, the seaport vital to Eisenhower. The m i s s i o n fails and the two corporals, David Kohn and Max Unger, surrender to the Canadians as deserters without divulging the nature of their mission. After the German surrender in May 1945, the Germans demand their return as traitors and, fo r re as on s sh ro u ded in secrecy, the Canadians not only comply with the request, but supply the unarmed Germans with guns for the execution. Frantic attempts to save the two young men by their Canadian friends fail. The incident raises importa nt an d t ime ly qu est io ns on the ethics and behavior of political and military structures. New evidence suggests Allied complicity with the Germans in anticipation of Russian aggression in Europe immediately after the war. Were David and Max sa crif icia l sh eep in the cov ert dealings of once hostile governments? Institutional face-saving adds unexpected dimensions to the bizarre and provoking drama of two human pawns, 'David and Max'." The author has fictionalized some of the nam es a nd ch aract ers w here he felt , in fairness, he did not have all the facts bearing on their participation. Dust jacket has been price clipped, has moderate rubbing on spine - light rubbing elsewhere, wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Very Good+ /Very Good-

7 Stutchbury, Bridget. THE BIRD DETECTIVE: INVESTIGATING THE SECRET LIVES OF BIRDS.
Toronto HarperCollins 2010 1554683475 / 9781554683475 First Edition Very Good + Very Good+
247 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). B&w drawings, graphs, colour plates. "(The author) roams forests and jungles studying the social lives and sexual antics of birds. She reveals the curious reasons for their strange behaviour, bright colouring and elaborate songs, explaining the science behind their surprisingly sophisticated and often amusing habits. In the course of her research for (this book, she) affixed small backpacks containing geolocators to songbirds, which yielded headline-making revelations about the amazing speed with which birds travel when they migrate. (She) explains why some birds readily 'divorce', why parents don't treat their sons and daughters as equals, why many females sneak in quick sex with neighbouring males and why some adults forego breeding altogether. She writes about the territorial nature of birds and describes their nesting habits, revealing why some species choose solitude, while others prefer to live in overcrowded groups. Perhaps most importantly, she illuminates how climate change and other pressures of the modern world are forcing birds to change their habits as they fight for their very survival." Very small bump at top/bottom of spine, two very small shallow dents at top edge of rear board. Dust jacket has some areas of very light edge wrinkling, minor rubbing.

Shambhala, Boston, 2001, 4th printing.
250 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 1570625522 "At the core of the ancient strategy manual known as 'The Art of War' is the understanding that conflict is an inescapable part of human life. Since, as Sun Tzu teaches, agg ression and response in kind can lead only to destruction, we must learn to work with conflict in a more profound and effective way. Crucial to this strategic vision is knowledge - especially self-knowledge - and a view of the whole that see k s t o b ring the conflicting views around to a larger perspective. This new and unusually faithful translation preseves the enigmatic quality of the original - allowing us to discover innumerable insights in its lines millenia after this oral t ra di t io n w as first set down. Line-by-line commentary and three extensive essays reveal the broader implications of Sun Tzu's teachings and how they can be applied to everyday circumstances. As a result, the classic's basic vocabulary takes o n n ew me ani ng . 'W ar' is any situation that demands hard choices about creation and destruction, life or death. The 'state' is the system in which we live - our household, our culture or society, or our own mind. 'Defense' ensures the integri ty o f o ur boun dar ie s an d allows life to flourish within them. And 'victory' lies in bringing others around to embracing a larger view - one that includes their own - without ever going to battle." 702 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(T)ells the story of human violence from Peking Man to the Mafia, taking into account the calculated sadism of the Assyrians, the opportunism of the Greek pirates, the brutality that made Rome the 'razor king of the Mediterranean', the mindless destruction of the Vandals, the mass slaughter of Genghis Khan, Tamurlane, Ivan the Terrible, Vlad the Impaler - - . Each age has its own characteristic pattern of crime. In the past three centuries crime has changed and evolved until the sex killer and the mass murderer have become symbols of all that is worst about our civilization. But this is not just a study of human depravity: it is an attempt to place crime in perspective against human discovery, exploration and invention. The result is a completely new approach to the history and psychology of human violence."
