LNER COUNTRY STATIONS., Brodribb, John.
3 Brodribb, John. LNER COUNTRY STATIONS.
London Ian Allan 1988 071101714X / 9780711017146 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
144 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, floor plans, elevations. "It is almost impossible to describe a typical LNER country station - the nearest it is possible to come is to say that somewhere like Otterington was one, although it was certainly not typical. The problem of finding a common strain of styles arises from the diversity of the LNER's consituents, and its adoption of a policy of decentralised management. In addition to this, the relative poverty of the company mitigated against renewal and rebuilding. (This book) is structured along the lines of these constituent companies and, with the aid of over 170 photographs and 20 line drawings, (the author) relates the histories and unifying features of the many varied stations and branches in the LNER's area of operations." Light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, soft crease across bottom edge of rear panel, very small dint on rear hinge.

THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES., Hooke, Wilfred D.
4 Hooke, Wilfred D. THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. THE COUNTY BOOKS SERIES.
Robert Hale, London, 1954, revised edition.
211 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w photographs, fold-out map at rear. "The Channel Islands are the oldest of Her Majesty's overseas possessions. Their self-governing status in the British Commonwealth is unique and through t heir long and often troubled history they have frequently played a part in world affairs that is out of all proportion with their size. In this book, which is illustrated from a profusion of well chosen photographs, the author has given an e r u d i t e portrait of the islands as they are at the present time. The day-to-day life of the islanders, the peculiarity of their institutions, customs and government are woven with the story of their past to form a fascinating picture. The r ea de r is s ho wn the beauty of the countryside with its prosperous agriculture and the grandeur of the towering cliffs and shares in the fascination of the little islets whose only inhabitants are the sea birds. The author....has lived in one o r o the r of the is lan d s almost all his life, becoming a Channel Islander by adoption at an early age. With the exception of a break for war service, he has devoted all the time he can spare from bookselling to the study of the islands, part icu larl y th ei r b ird life . H is enthusiasm as a field naturalist has taken him to every part of the larger islands and to most of the smaller reefs and rocks. The Channel Islands have received much publicity since their occupation by the Ger man Army durin g t he w ar, but f ew ac cou nts have presented such a comprehensive and readable story of an area that never fails to captivate for life all those who visit it." Bump to corners of boards - migrates slightly into adjacent pages, lig ht b rowni ng to edge s of text block, very ligh t wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has moderate edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, several small tears and chips, light browning and several light stains on rear pane l, a f ew sma ll fo xing marks . RICHARD NEUTRA., Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa.
6 Spade, Rupert, introduction and notes. Photographs by Yukio Futagawa. RICHARD NEUTRA.
Simon and Schuster, New York, 1971, first American edition.
136 pp, small 4to (10 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and colour photographs, floor plans. "The reputation of Richard Neutra (1892-1970) is founded on his finely executed and superbly landscaped domestic buildings. Born and educated in Vi enna, where he was influenced by the leading European architects, notably Adolph Loos, Neutra developed the intense dislike of ornament that was to characterize his work. He emigrated to the United States in 1923 and in 1926 established a pract i c e in California where the majority of his buildings are to be found. His highly individual style is characterized by the adoption of plate glass for exterior walls, combined with overhanging eaves, outrigged columns and integrated pools, and b y th e e xploitation of the subtropical California vegetation to create privacy." Slight browning to edges of textblock, two very small light stains on bottom of text block, tiny light foxing marks on top of text block, slight waviness at top edge of pi ct ur e pages. Dust jacket has very light browning on spine and along top edge, light edge wrinkling along top edge, tiny hole at top of front flap-fold, light rubbing, small corner crease on front flap.
