4 Beaty, David. STRANGE ENCOUNTERS: MYSTERIES OF THE AIR.

160 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "Why did the airship R101 crash on her voyage to India? How did the great Australian pioneer aviatior, Charles Kingsford-Smith, leave such a trail of death behind him when he disappared in 'Lady Southern Cross' in 1935? How did the pilots of the Fairey Postal Mono-plane in 1929 know that they were going to die? Why did so many of the first women who tried to emulate Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic disappear in mysterious circumstances? What was the jinx that befell Stratocruiser propellers in the 1950s, and was it a coincidence that two Stratocruiser captains met in mid-Atlantic on Christmas Day 1957? What was the strange link between the Comet take-off accidents and the Comets that exploded in mid-air? Many flying mysteries of the past have since been explained by the advance of technology, but many remain, particularly those connected to time, coincidence and precognition of events. None of the aircraft disasters described in this book, which have taken place this century in uncertain and even mysterious circumstances, have ever been fully eplained." Very light browning to pages and edges of text block. Dust jacket is price-clipped, has very minor rubbing, very minor edge wrinkling, tiny scuff on rear flap-fold.

FRIENDLY FIRE: ACCIDENTS IN BATTLE FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO THE GULF WAR., Bickers, Richard Townshend.
5 Bickers, Richard Townshend. FRIENDLY FIRE: ACCIDENTS IN BATTLE FROM ANCIENT GREECE TO THE GULF WAR.
Leo Cooper, London, (1994).
162 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. "...(an) historical survey of some of the most dramatic incidents of what (the author) more correctly calls 'accidental amicide', it is an occurence as old as warfare itself. It is inevitable that in the heat of battle men become confused and disoriented and such accidents are bound to happen. Sometimes, as the author shows, the blame can be attributed to the incompetence or stupidity of a commander who leads or sends his men into the line of fire of his own guns. More often, however, it is simply the result of a breakdown in communications or a change in the weather. In this absorbing book, Richard Bickers puts 'Friendly Fire' in its true perspective, using his own experience as an airman in and after the Second World War to who how hard it is for a pilot to distinguish friend from foe." Very light wrinkling at top of spine. Dust jacket has light rubbing, light edge wrinkling. VG+/VG

WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT., Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere.
6 Boswell, Richard. Foreword by General Sir Peter de la Billiere. WEAPONS FREE. THE STORY OF A GULF WAR HELICOPTER PILOT.
Crecy, (Manchester, 1998).
216 pp, large 8vo (9 7/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w and color photographs. "In September 1990 Richard Boswell was a newly qualified helicopter pilot in the Royal Navy, fresh out of flight school and flying one of the most potent fighting helicopters in the world - the Westland Lynx. The world was at his feet in every sense. Then, on the day he and his girlfriend decided to buy a house together, Saddam Hussein invaded Kuwait. With less than 24 hours notice, Richard Boswell was onboard HMS Manchester and en-route to the Gulf and impending war. Once in the Gulf, HMS Manchester prepared for the seaborne invasion that most thought was inevitalbe. Boswell saw action against Iraqi forces, protecting Allied ships and sinking a number of Iraqi gunboats. After the liberation of Kuwait, he flew extensively around the devastated country, when his duties included a spell as pilot for Sir Peter de la Billiere. But his story does not end there. After returning to the UK , Boswell became an instructor and also indulged his passion for flying home-built aircraft, a passion that led to the accident that nearly killed him and ended his days as a Navy pilot. The portrayal of the battle to rebuilt his shattered life is every bit as graphic as his wartime experiences in the Gulf." Minor wrinkling at top of spine - very light at bottom. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at bottom of spine. VG+/VG+

Somerton, Somerset Crecy 1992 0947554270 / 9780947554279 Hard Cover Fine Very Good+
282 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs, maps. "The author was a squadron and wing intelligence officer and kept long and detailed diaries of the day to day life in the Desert Group, and on these the book is largely based. The result is a vivid and realistic picture of the Desert atmosphere; he communicates the tenseness during the nights when the Wellingtons were away on missions, the crashes, the accidents, the debriefings, and the dreaded sandstorms. He recaptures the excitement of the perilous operations, some of which he flew on himself, as well as the lighter moments during stand downs and leave periods. This is an outstanding contribution to aviation history, conveying as it does not only individual heroisms but the corporateness of a squadron in wartime." Book is Fine. Inscribed on front free endpaper: "For George Atkins - / old friend - / as a poor return for the / best apples I've met in / an age! / John Erskine / January, 1932 - ". "The car was moving fast but not too fast. You couldn't blame the driver. A tire exploded - . Before Ormer saw his friends again he stood before a Gate and heard the amazing dictum that scared him back to life: neither right nor wrong counts, but only their completion. The man alone is damned who fails to fulfil his intentions. But - cheating his partner. Seducing a girl. These were among the things that Ormer had begun. Now with his own salvation at stake he must return to complete them. In the twenty years that had passed, the partner had become the president of a powerful bank, the girl had become the wife of his faithful friend. And he knew he must return to face the Figure at the Gate. Most men and women carry about with them regrets vague or clearly articulated for the things they have not done. As we grow older we regret even the prudence which kept us from mistakes. Even from mistakes, we begin to feel, we might have learned more fully to live. This common experience is dramatized (here). Along with the regret for neglected opportunities to live goes usually a wish that we might return to past hours and complete what we left unfinished. Here is the story of a man who tried to make such a repetition of his life." "....looks back at some of the mishaps and disasters involving ships that sailed the Great Lakes long ago. Many of these incidents happened during the fierce storms of autumn, others were the result of horrific fires, groundings, collisions or sinkings. Sudden storms proved deadly for some ships, driving them onto shore where helpless onlookers watched or ca tching them in the open lake where they sank without a trace, taking the entire crew to their deaths. Each of the Great Lakes has its own history and particular reputation for danger to shipping. Each of them has shoal areas littered with w r e c k s a nd also holds undiscovered 'graveyards' in deeper waters where ships have gone down. Sport divers and history buffs have located some of these long-lost wrecks, while many remain elusive. A few of the Great Lakes ships noted in this b oo k le ft t h e inland seas to work in saltwater. During the war years many were pressed into service and successfully aided the war effort - some returned, while others became the victims of enemy action or casualties of the elements. Sometim es, to o, th e i nci de nt s described were minor mishaps with no loss of life, but all these stories record the accidents and the challenges that faced the brave men and women who sailed the Great Lakes." Leo Cooper, London, 1986.
260 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 043618740X B&w photographs, drawings. "This is the first comprehensive account of every peacetime submarine disaster from 1774 to the present day. It is, however, very far from being just a list of what sunk, where, when and why, for the author examines most of the important sinkings in considerable detail, analysing what went wrong and describing the attempts made at rescuing the crew and/or the vessel. In this way he traces t he development of the submarine from the earliest experimental submersibles of the late eighteenth century down to the nuclear-powered monsters of today, describing in parallel the developments of underwater rescue operations and survival tec h n i q u e s ....The appendices include the most comprehensive and accurate list of submarine disasters ever printed, updated to June 1985, in the compilation of which the author has had the co-operation of the US, French, Italian, Danish and Japan es e Na vi es , as well as that of the RN Submarine Museum and the German 'U-Boot Archiv'." London Caxton 2002 1840671645 / 9781840671643 Reprint Hard Cover Very Good Very Good+
430 pp, 9 1/2" H. "(A) chronicle of shipping disasters during the last great war of the age of sail, based almost exclusively on the reporting of the time. Listed are some fifteen hundred ships, vessels naval and mercantile, of many nations whose tribulations were covered in the national and local newspapers as well as the specialist press like the 'Naval Chronicle'. These reports run the whole gamut of maritime tragedies - the bizarre, curious and quirky, as well as the familiar - and in all their inconsequential detail. Through the medium of the reporting of the time, what is here presented is a truly contemporary perspective of events, in itself a fascinating revelation of the mores and attitutudes of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. Given the sheer number of craft lost at sea, it cannot be entirely exhaustive, but no other book contains so much non-technical information on the maritime disasters of the period 1793-1815." Creases at bottom edge of spine. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear.
