This time it was right, it would work, and no-one would have to get nailed to anything. It is full of advice and stories told by a real lover of dogs and the advice is as true and revealing now as when the book was first published in 1927." 12 Allen, Gillian. YESTERDAY'S TOWN: WELLINGTON. A DIARY OF A WEST COUNTRY TOWN IN THE 19th CENTURY.

124 pp, small 4to (10 7/16" H). Number 368 of a limited edition. Profusely illustrated with b&w photographs, reproductions. "(I)t is the detail of the 19th century record which attracts us most; the people who lived in specific houses like the Millers, Langleys and Merediths; the controversy about the three posts outside the White Hart Inn; the shops that changed from bank to fishmonger, from watchmaker to cobbler, from Bell Inn to basketmaker; the man who dug a canal in his garden to employ poor people; the ten-year-old who died when her pinny caught fire; the horse that took nine men to the gallows. Here too is the fire brigade whose captain refused entry to his own team as his cottage blazed away; the riots when a cemetery was proposed; the earliest chapels built and closed; Ann Pain, who stole a bullock's heart on St. Valentine's Day; Mr Marks, who lost 50 Pounds at Wellington Fair; elderly Maria Strippling, sentenced to seven days' labour for pinching threepennorth of hay; and the 4,703 tramps who came to Wellington in 1865. Transport changed the town, when the turnpikes, canal, railway and finally motorcar came. The first car owner was heavily fined; the first acceptable motor hit the Town Hall. Taverns prospered, and there were 75 at one time or another. Thirteen survive. The greatest change of all came with the Great War - 'our old world has gone forever' said the local 'rag'. That world is recreated (here) - in a fluent, fascinating and fact-packed narrative and some 200 pictures, many of them rare, and most unique to this book." Book is slightly cocked. Dust jacket has very light wrinkling at top edge, a few small faint indentations on panels, minor rubbing.

MERE ANARCHY., Allen, Woody.
13 Allen, Woody. MERE ANARCHY.
Random House, New York, 2007, first edition.
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 9781400066414 "Here, in his first collection since his three hilarious classics 'Getting Even', 'Without Feathers', and 'Side Effects', Woody Allen has managed to write a book that not only a nswers the most profound questions of human existence but is also the perfect size to place under any short table leg to prevent wobbling. 'I awoke Friday, and because the universe is expanding it took me longer than usual to find my robe,' h e e x p l ains in a piece on physics called 'Strung Out'. In other flights of inspirational sanity we are introduced to a cast of characters only Allen could imagine: Jasper Nutmeat, Flanders Mealworm, and the independent film mogul E. Coli Big g s, j u st t o na me a few. Whether he is writing about art, sex, food, or crime ('Pugh has been a policeman as far back as he can remember. His father was a notorious bank robber, and the only way Pugh could get to spend time with him was to a pp reh end h im' ), he is explosively funny. In 'This Nib for Hire,' a Hollywood bigwig comes across an author's book in a little country store and describes it in a way that aptly captures this magnificent volume: 'Actually,' the producer says, 'I 'd n ever se en a bo ok rema indered in the kindling section before'." 14 Anderes, Fred & Agranoff, Ann. ICE PALACES.
Toronto Macmillan of Canada 1983 0771598572 / 9780771598579 First Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good
132 pp, oblong (9 1/8" H x 10 3/4" D). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs, repro-ductions, architectural drawings. "The magical buildings illustrated in this pioneer study of a virtually unknown architectural phenomenon were truly built of ice, and they were said to shimmer with color and fire reminiscent of sapphire, topaz, and opal. In style they recalled medieval castles, Gothic cathed-rals, Russian palaces, and Art Deco fantasies. Many were huge, reaching as high as a 14 -story building and extending as long as a football field, but, of course, there's no physical trace of them. Nevertheless, the authors have discovered dozens of historic photographs, lithographs, postcards, paintings, and drawings of these fabulous but ephemeral constructions, as well as mementoes of the winter activities and sports surrounding their creation. (They) relate the history of ice castle building and examine about thirty in detail. This type of architectural tour de fource had its beginning in 18th-century Russia, when the eccentric Empress Anna Ivanova built an icy honeymoon cottage for an out-of-favor prince. In North America, ice palaces were created as centrepieces for the winter carnivals that sprang up in northern cities in the late 19th century. Between 1883 and 1942, grand castles were built of blocks of ice in the Canadian cities of Montreal, Quebec, and Ottawa, and also in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Leadville, Colorado. Today the leading centers for construction in ice and snow are at the annual winter festivals held in Quebec, Canada, and Sapporo, Japan. (T)he authors - both architects - examine the theory and practice of building with ice (which under certain conditions has the structural properties of concrete), both for practical and fantastic purposes." Book is clean and bright. Dust jacket has light rubbing - mainly on front panel, minor wrinkling at top of spine.

16 Anderson, J.R.L. DEATH IN THE GREENHOUSE.
London Victor Gollancz 1978 0575025263 / 9780575025264 First British Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
192 pp, 8"H. "Old Mr Quenenden has retired to a cottage in Berkshire, where he devotes himself to the selective breeding of tropical plants. Why, when he has lived there quietly for years, should someone shoot him dead in his greenhouse? Why should he leave his little fortune - a quarter of a million pounds - to a North of England schoolmistress whom he seem to have known only slightly? And how do these events link up with an extraordinary blackmail demand received by the new Minister of State at the Foreign Office, Meredith Boscombe: a demand for one million pounds in used notes. The involvement of an important Minister brings Colonel Blair into the enquiry: Mr Anderson's fans will already know Blair well, as the agent who acts as liaison officer between the police and the Government. Now Blair's investigations lead him into the curious problem of the little white plants of the genus 'adamantifera', and the elusive clue of the plain van, and the startling revelations about the death of Boscombe's Indian wife. All of which leads to an immensely exciting climax in the heart of Africa, with Blair in pursuit of a triple murderer, and narrowly escaping death in the mighty Otaro Falls." Previous owner's initials in ink on free front endpaper, tiny light foxing mark on fore-edge of textblock. Dust jacket has some light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, small corner crease on rear flap, minor edge browning.

"With its dramatic landscapes and rugged beauty, Alberta's Bow River valley has inspired generations of artists. (This book) brings together a col lection of works by local and visiting artists from 1845 to 2000 that captures the many moods of the river from its source high in the Rocky Mountains down to the city of Calgary and eastward across the open prairie. (The authors) have select e d f r o m a number of Alberta museums and national collections which depict the Bow River and its valley, representing a broad array of historical periods, artistic styles, and points of view. From European topographers and military artists to p ai nt e rs c om missioned by the Canadian Pacific Railway, from the Group of Seven to modernists and abstractionists, these pictures of the Bow valley tell us much about changing attitudes towards nature and the environment as well as the evolution of an a rti sti c c ommunity in western Canada."Inside - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. First six volumes of the Myth Series - with the first four books in a publisher's slipcase - 6 3/4" H. 1. Another Fine Myth - 200 pp, 1984 3rd printing, ISBN 0441023606 - "Skeeve was a magician's apprentice, until an assassin hired by an ancient enemy struck and his master was dead. Skeeve suddenly found himself alone with Aahz, a purple-tongued demon the old magician had summoned from another dimension as a practical joke just before he was killed. Aahz had lost his powers, Skeeve had lost his job. So together, they set out through a universe populated by Deveels (or devils), Imps, dragons, unicorns and more, looking for a way to get even." 2. Myth Conceptions - 217 pp, 1986 5th printing, ISBN 0441555209 - "Skeeve was summoned to the court of Roderick the Fifth of Possiltum to audition for the position of Court Magician. Unfortunately for everyone, he got the job. How was Aahz going to help Skeeve defend a kindgom against the mightiest invading army in the world? With his pet dragon Gleep and bewitching green-haired Tanda standing by, Skeeve waited for Aahz to come up with a solution. The problem was, if they won they would be executed - and if they lost they would be killed. What kind of magik could beat those odds?" 3. Myth Directions - 202 pp, 1985 1st printing, ISBN 044155525X - "The Trophy was unique, no question. It was easily the ugliest object Skeeve had ever seen in any dimension. And before landing his job as Court Magician, young Skeeve had seen a thing or two. But Tanda wanted it - and, as a rule, whatever the beautiful Tanda wants, Tanda gets. The problem is, getting it will take more than luck. It will take all the talents of a young but gifted magician, a scaley but canny Pervect, and a charming demon not above a little interdimensional thievery." 4. Hit or Myth - 170 pp, 1985 4th printing, ISBN 0441338518 - "King Roderick takes a powder - leaving Skeeve in his place to marry his homicidal fiancee Hemlock and face the tender mercies of Bruce, the Mob's fairy godfather who wants Skeeve working for him - or not at all. On top of that, Aahz has taken a forced vacation, a two-ton demon has a crush of Skeeve, and both Possiltum and Deva are about to be invaded." 5. Mything Persons - 172 pp, 1987 2nd printing, ISBN 0441552765 - "(Skeeve's) partner Aahz has disappeared and it looks like foul play. Finding Aahz ought to be a snap for a talented magician like Skeeve, especially with a sassy apprentice and a dumb but brawny bodyguard along for the ride. The trouble is, they're sleuthing in another dimension: a strange and chilly realm where day is night and humans are considered monsters. Add a murder rap, a couple of vampires, and the fact that magic doesn't work here, and you've got a trio in real hot water!" 6. Little Myth Marker - 167 pp, 1987 1st printing, ISBN 0441484999 - "(Skeeve) bluffs his way into a high-stakes game of dragon poker and, by some miracle, wins. Then, still flush with luck, (he) heads straight for the king of dragon poker, the Sen-Sen Ante Kid. And with a pot of half a million, there'd better not be any myth-deals. But even if Skeeve can hold his own in a high-stakes game, there's still Markie. Left as a pint-sized IOU by a player who went broke, she conjures a house full of trouble every time she tries to cast a spell. And to top it off, jealous magicians have hired the notorious assassin, The Axe, to cut more than the deck - ."
