But there are things about the case which Chief Superintendent Wycliffe doesn't like. So he keeps nosing around. And his investigations lead him into the details of another murder case, one that is now twenty years old. Is it possible that there is some relationship between the two cases, and if so what? As Wycliffe, that most unorthodox of detectives, probes into the present and the past, our own suspicions and assumptions are being constantly challenged." THE ARROW., Dow, James.
14 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1997 1550285548 / 9781550285543 Soft Cover Fine
166 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs. "Here is the fascinating story of the rise and fall of the Arrow, the legendary interceptor jet aircraft developed by A.V. Roe Canada in the fifties. The Arrow was an unprecedented success story for Canada's fledgling aviation industry. It was conceived by its builders as the culmination of an impressive string of world firsts. Faster than any previous aircraft, it represented the leading edge of technology and an achievement of the highest calibre. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time and which remains hard to fathom even today. The Diefenbaker government cancelled the Arrow, and everything was destroyed, including the planes themselves. Nothing was to remain. Working from official documents, archives, interviews and a wide range of unofficial sources, James Dow presents the authoritative story of A.V. Roe Canada and its projects. He describes how the Arrow was developed and why it was killed. Dow takes us behind the scenes to the real dynamics and rivalries which were a part of the Arrow from the beginning and which explain its fate. This edition of the definitive books on the subject has been updated with a new introduction."

THE ARROW., Dow, James.
15 Dow, James. THE ARROW.
Toronto James Lorimer 1979 0888622811 Hard Cover Very Good Good+
160 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "The Arrow (supersonic fighter) appeared on Avro's drawing boards in 1952 and was in the air by 1958. Test flights were a great success, and five aircraft had flown by 1959. Then came the dramatic decision whose rationale was not made public at the time, and which even now seems obscure. The Arrow was cancelled, and everything to do with it, including the planes that had already flown, was broken into scrap. Nothing was to remain. To tell the story of the Arrow, James Dow explores the impressive experience of Canada's aircraft industry, created from virtually nothing during the Second World War by C.D. Howe and recruits from the business world. Avro was put together when the government aircraft companies were sold off at the war's end. Avro's first postwar project was the Jetliner, conceived in 1945 for Air Canada (then TCA). It was very nearly the world's first passenger jet, and was first in the air in August 1949 only days behind Britain's Comet. Avro's military experience came with the CF-100 Canuck fighter, which flew first in 1951. There was even an experimental flying saucer, built for the U.S. armed forces. The Arrow was to be the culmination of this experience and this success." Previous owner's place, date and signature in ink on front free endpaper; some light toning to endpapers and to edges of text block, very tiny bump at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light to moderate rubbing, several small tears with creases at top edge, light edge wear, one small edge chip, protectedin a mylar sleeve.

HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT., Harvey, John H.
19 Harvey, John H. HENRY YEVELE, c 1320 to 1400: THE LIFE OF AN ENGLISH ARCHITECT.
London B.T. Batsford 1946 Second Edition Hard Cover Good Fair
86 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions, drawings, floor plans, colour frontispiece. "Henry Yevele's life ranged roughly from 1320 to 1400, a period during which the architectural experiments of the previous century gradually became crystallised in the enduring national style which, for want of a better term, the textbooks call 'Perpendicular'. At the time of his apprenticeship, the new fashion had been devised, but not mastered, and many patrons of art must have been reluctant to find money for costly experiements, so long as the final effect was in doubt. Only the appearance of Perpendicular masterpieces would be convincing; and for the making of masterpieces the first requisite is a master. The master, a truly great one, was at hand, and his name was Henry Yevele. This book, which brilliantly surveys one of the greatest periods of architectural achievement in the history of our race, is the first full-length biography of an English architect of the Middle Ages. With a wealth of detail and a balanced critical insight, John Harvey convinces us that, throughout the period, Yevele was giving to English architecture a unity and strength comparable to the qualities with which his friend, Chaucer, was endowing our language. It includes a great deal of recent research never before brought together, and is richly illustrated with plans and details, and by views of the work of Yevele and his contemporaries." A few very small foxing marks on pastedowns, two sharp creases down the front free endpaper - very soft impression of creases up to page x, tiny dent at bottom edge of boards, slight fading to spine and hinge color and also at top edge of boards, ver light edge wear/soiling. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING., Hoff, Benjamin.
20 Hoff, Benjamin. THE WAY TO LIFE: AT THE HEART OF THE TAO TE CHING.
Weatherhill, New York, (1981), Ist edition.
86 pp, oblong 16mo (6 1/4" H x 9 1/8" D), hard cover (blue cloth with silver lettering on spine) in dust jacket. 16 color photographs. "These new and extremely creative versions (of the Tao Te Ching) by Benjamin Hoff, accompanied by an introduction to the basics of Taoist philosophy, bring the words of the sage to life once again. The Tao Te Ching, or Tao Virture Classic, concerns the working of Tao, the way or path to life in harmony with natural laws. The Tao Te Ching cautions us to seek wisdom rather than knowledge: 'Along the way to knowledge, many things are accumulated. Along the way to wisdom, many things are discarded'. In just this manner, Benjamin Hoff has succeeded in dispersing the mysteries surrounding this ancient text and in reducing the Taoist philosophy to a straightforward message, ever intriguing but no longer elusive. Such basic principles of Taoism as the uncarved block, the source, and the wu wei are given lucid definition. And in further accordance with the Taoist belief that words are an insufficient vehicle for conveying the meaning of Tao, sixteen color photographs are juxtaposed to selected passages, reflecting their essential truth..."
