152 pp, 4to (11 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0134516427 "Lavishly illustrated with more than 400 color illustrations, the Atlas looks at the history of Jerusalem with maps, drawings, and isometric reconstructions, all updated with the latest archaeological evidence. Jerusalem is perhaps the most interesting city on earth. Sacred to Jews, Christians, and Muslims alike, it dates back to at least the third millenium BCE. David made it his capital; Solomon glorified it with his Te mple; it fell to Babylonia in 586 BCE and was rebuilt by Ezra and Nehemiah; it was the city of the Maccabees and of the Herods, and the place where Jesus was tried and crucified. Titus razed its buildings and destroyed the Temple in 70 CE. A f t e r t he revolt of Bar Kochba, the Romans made Jerusalem a pagan shrine. Jerusalem fell to the Crusaders in 1099; in 1187, Muslims, led by Saladin, captured the city and held it almost continuously until the British took control after World Wa r I. Th e B ritish Mandate ended in 1948 when the State of Israel was born. In 1967, Israel reunited the city. Special features in the Atlas include: concise, easy-to-read text; four-color illustrations, maps, drawings, and photos throughout ; de fi nit i ve an d a uthoritative information; selected bibliography of further readings; thorough index; an up-to-date approach, based on the latest findings. For anyone interested in biblical archaeology; geography; Jewish studies, culture, an d his tor y; a nd th e h isto ry and culture of the Middle East, (this book) is certain to be an invaluable resource." 5 Bata, Thomas J. With Sonja Sinclair. BATA: SHOEMAKER TO THE WORLD.
Toronto Stoddart 1990 0773724168 / 9780773724167 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
341 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w photographs. "In 1932, when young Tom Bata watched his father's coffin being lowered into his grave, he silently promised to abide by the wishes expressed in his father's 'moral testament': that the Bata Shoe Company was to be treated not as a source of private wealth, but as a public trust, a means of improving the liviing standards within the community and providing customers with good value for their money. At the time, Tom had no idea of the challenges he would face in fulfilling that promise. Not only was he ill-equipped, at age eighteen, to step into the shoes of an acknowledged business genius, creator of the largest shoe manufacturing and retailing organization in the world. Worse than that, fate was about to deal him a series of painful blows. The subjugation of his homeland, Czechoslovakia, by the Nazis was followed by an acrimonious family rift, the expropriation by Communist regimes of all his holdings in Eastern and Central Europe and, in other parts of the world, economic and political upheavals that threatened the survival of the newly resuscitated Bata organization. Yet Bata actually thrived on the sudden change and adversity. From his new home base in Canada he built, this side of the Iron Curtain, a global empire that employs 70,000 people and plays an important part in the economies of many developing countries. (This) is the story of the man, his family and their business." Remainder mark (dot) on bottom of text block, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap, very light rubbing.

IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919., Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes)
10 Cane, Bruce. (Deward Barnes) IT MADE YOU THINK OF HOME. THE HAUNTING JOURNAL OF DEWARD BARNES, CANADIAN EXPEDITIONARY FORCE: 1916-1919.
Toronto Dundurn 2004 1550025120 / 9781550025125 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
318 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "This is (the story of Deward Barnes, a Canadian soldier of WWI), in his words, written as the events of the Great War were unfolding. Illustrated with Deward's sketches and contemporary photos, (it) takes us into the mind of this ordinary Canadian soldier, trapped in a world in which he had to pay a terrible price in order to survive. In 1917, Deward was assigned to the firing squad that was to take the life of Private Harold Lodge, who had been convicted of desertion by a court martial. Lodge was one of 23 Canadians executed during the war by their own brothers at arms. It was an experience that changed Deward forever. Bruce Cane has provided valuable insights into Deward's words by juxtaposing (them) with the official accounts of these events, along with other first-hand accounts from the period, in order to capture the nuance of each of his entries. Deward Barnes' diary takes us into the trenches and firing lines of the Western Front like no other first-hand Canadian account before. Deward's is the voice of the Canadian soldier, Everyman in khaki, the men who today lie in their graves in the fields of Flanders and Picardy." Christmas notation, place, date and signature in pencil on free front endpaper; light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing.

Melville Henry Cane, 1879-1980, was a graduate of Columbia University and partner in the law firm Ernst, Fox & Cane in New York, where he was legal counsel to Sinclair Lewis, Upton Sinclair, Ayn Rand, William, Saroyan, Thomas Wolfe and others. He was also a poet, producing several volumes of verse, writing "Making a Poem" in 1953 and winning the Robert Frost Medal for lifetime achievement in 1971. The books: 1. January Garden, 1926, 70 pp, 8 1/2" H, black cloth spine with white paper title label/black lettering on spine, black paper covered boards, top edge orange, orange endpapers. Inscribed on title page: "For Tommy Atkins / From his old friend, / Melville Cane 4/1/26". Orange dust jacket with black lettering/decoration. 2. Atkins (George Chew "Tommy" Atkins), a fellow Columbia graduate and lawyer who moved to a farm in Ontario, Canada in 1921. 1. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated March 31/26. References the "sporty" proposition of exchanging Cane's first book of verse for some of Tommy's apples, commenting on Tommy's giving up of "this unproductive law activity and grow(ing) something worthwhile." In response to an invitation to visit Ontario, Cane says that he happens "to be the only person in America out of jail who hasn't a car." 2. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated April 7/26. References the arrival of the apples and the finding of three with soft spots, but continuing "if you find only three poems with soft spots, it'll be a stand-off." 3. Full sheet, typed, signed "Melville Cane", dated April 20th, 1926. Comments favorably on Tommy's idea of raising turkeys, but "do not expect epics from me in exchange." Mentions he has conveyed Tommy's greetings to Harcourt and Brace (Cane was on their board of directors). 4. Full sheet, holograph, signed "Melville", dated 3/9/33. Comments on the university's (Columbia's), and the general, lack of appreciation for poets and mentioning that he is sending "a couple of specimens (of poetry) of different moods." (see below). 5. Half sheet, holograph, signed "Melville', dated 6/25/51. Mentioning the death of a mutual acquaintance and hoping Tommy will visit. The first two pieces in this group have pencil notations at the bottom, probably by Tommy. WITH: a group of four poems. Three are typed on full sheets of paper, each with one correction in pen and one with a pencil quotation from a poem by John Erskine (a mutual friend). "Melville Cane" is typed at the bottom of each of these sheets, but they are NOT signed. The three poems ("Hymn to Night", "Petition" and "Ancient Organ Grinder") were later published in "A Wider Arc". "Hymn to Night" and "Ancient Organ Grider" were included with Cane's letter to Tommy of 3/9/33. The fourth poem, on a 3 1/4" square scrap of paper, is handwritten in ink, with crossings out and smears and refers to honeybees - it was tucked into "Behind Dark Spaces", at the dedication page, where Cane gives Tommy directions on where to send his honey. WITH: Three items relating to Bernard M.L. Ernst, Cane's long-time friend, fellow Columbia graduate and partner in the law firm of Ernst, Fox & Cane. Ernst was also president of the New York Branch of the Society American Magicians and Vice President of the Magicians' Club of London. 1. "an address / by Melville H. Cane / delivered at the funeral of / Bernard M.L. Ernst / at Earl Hall, Columbia / University, November 30, / 1938" - [8] pp (not including covers), stapled, 7 3/4" H. 2. Holograph note in envelope from Roberta Ernst to Mr. Atkins, thanking him for his "kind note' and commenting on Ernst's last days. 3. Typed slip of paper (approx. 2 5/8" H x 8 7/16" W) with a quote from "Quicker Than the Eye" by John Mulholland, mentioning Ernst as "One of the best loved men in magic". 1. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND., Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison.
14 Daniels, Jeffery. Drawings by Leonora Ison. ARCHITECTURE IN ENGLAND.
Weidenfeld & Nicolson (Educational), London, 1968.
128 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 298762102 B&w drawings, floor plans, elevations. "Illustrated with over 70 line drawings and plans, the text spans over 2,000 years of architecture in England. The account begins with a discussion of the villas, camps and roads of Roman Britain, and shows how this heritage slowly decayed, giving way to the Romanesque imported by the conquering Normans. The soaring Gothic of the middle ages yields in its turn to another E u r o p e a n influence, the Renaissance, which acquires its own English character. The Baroque, Pallandian and Neo-Classic movements are then analysed, and the survey is brought right up to date with the industrial and scientific revolutions of t he n in et ee nt h and twentieth centuries, and their effects on techniques and styles. Dominant architectural styles are fully defined and illustrated, and the many examples given will stimulate a study in depth by means of visits to churches, ho use s, cas tle s, mus eu ms and modern streets and office blocks. The special value of this book for the student of architecture is the care taken by the author to illustrate his text at every point, with examples drawn from every field of arch itec ture - eccl esia sti cal and secular, domestic and institutional."
