CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974., Barthorp, Michael.
2 Barthorp, Michael. CRATER TO THE CREGGAN: A HISTORY OF THE ROYAL ANGLIAN REGIMENT 1964-1974.
London Leo Cooper 1976 085052229 First Edition Soft Cover Very Good -
160 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). Color frontispiece, b&w photographs, maps, 'family tree'. "In the early 1960s a new concept for the organisation of the Infantry was devised - the voluntary formation of Large Regiments. This is the story of the first: the Royal Anglian Regiment, with four regular battalions, formed from the seven county regiments of East Anglia and the East Midlands. These regiments, each with long and highly individual histories and traditions, made a decision to unite, a step which required goodwill, tolerance, trust and determination to made the union succeed. In some quarters, the Large Regiment concept was a nail in the coffin of the treasured regimental system; to others, it was a means of retaining the essential features of that system while withstanding the stresses of change in the Army as a whole. The Royal Anglians have had ten years in which to test their experiment, years of futher reductions in the Army, of training as airportable and mechanized infantry, keeping the peace in distant garrisons, as United Nations troops, and above all the years of bullet and bomb in Aden and Ulster. This book describes how the dangers and difficulties of those years have welded together a new regiment of modern infantry, highly trained and professional yet still conscious of inherited traditions. Chiefly, it is a picture of the contemporary British infantryman, disciplined and brave in action, patient and cheerful in adversity, a new breed in many ways but with all the best qualities of his forefathers and, in a confused world, a figure of hope and reassurance." Very faint cigarette odour, small soft bump to top corner of pages, light wear at top of front hinge/spine, light rubbing, fore-edge of front cover is lightly faded, minor soiling to bottom of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock, tiny speck on top of textblock, very faint crease and slight fading on spine.

TORONTO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE., Berger, Howard, introduction.
3 Berger, Howard, introduction. TORONTO: A PHOTOGRAPHIC TRIBUTE.
B. Mitchell, Godalming, Surrey, 1989.
96 pp, 4to (11 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0886655811 Profusely illustrated with colour photographs. "From its modest importance in the late 1960s, Toronto has developed into one of the world's greatest financial and communications capitals. 'Toronto' chronicles the city's rise to corporate power by outlining the large-scale development of the downtown core, which spawned Bay Street as Canada's answer to Wall Street. Tracing Toronto's history from its humble beginnings as a fur-trading post in the 1600s, the following pages detail the construction of Toronto's important rapid-transit system, which features one of the world's most extensive subway lines, and looks at the city's exciting Harbourfront development. From the world-renowned Canadian National Exhibition and the Roy Thomson Hall to the man-made islands of Ontario Place and the SkyDome, stunning colour photography and an authoritative text portray Toronto as the ever-growing metropolis it truly is. Canada's largest city has come a long way in a short time. 'Toronto' shows you exactly how far and how fast." Light waviness to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has very light browning to panels. 4 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

5 Bernard, Andre; Leveille, Jacques; Lord, Guy. PROFILE: CALGARY. THE POLITICAL AND ADMINISTRATIVE STRUCTURES OF THE METROPOLITAN REGION OF CALGARY.
Ottawa Ministry of State for Urban Affairs 1975 Soft Cover Very Good
131 pp, 11 5/8" H. 10 b&w illustrations (charts, maps). "The policy of annexation pursued by the City of Calgary since the 1960s has created a well integrated metropolitan region. At the same time, by extending its authority over surrounding municipalities, the City has also provided for its own growth requirements. Although officially part of the Calgary Regional Planning Commission, Calgary has nevertheless managed to maintain the degree of autonomy necessary to determine its own pattern of urban development. Attention thus tends to be focussed on the complex and detailed organization of political and administrative structures within the City itself - especially where land use planning is concerned." Interior - clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - two tiny corner creases, light soiling on rear hinge.

FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS., Boileau, John.
8 Boileau, John. FASTEST IN THE WORLD: THE SAGA OF CANADA'S REVOLUTIONARY HYDROFOILS.
Formac, Halifax, 2004.
96 pp, large 8vo (9 1/8" H), soft cover. ISBN 088780621X B&w and colour photographs. "In the search for the perfect flying machine, hydrofoils were born. In 1919, Alexander Graham Bell and his young collaborator, Casey Baldwin, broke a world spe ed record when their hydrofoil prototype, HD4, skimmed across Lake Bras d'Or at 61.5 knots. This book is a complete re-examination of the Canadian research into hydrofoil vessels in the twentieth century. It describes how Baldwin and his c o l l e a g u e s, generously supported by Mabel Bell and under the guidance of the great inventor, built and tested numerous prototypes until they finally succeeded in building a high-speed hydrofoil for the navy. By the end of the Second World Wa r, C an ad a ha d th e third largest navy in the world and was set to be at the forefront of anti-submarine warfare. The Bell-Baldwin research was the foundation of the development of a small, fast vessel that could patrol the oceans, protectin g t he Wes t f rom t he Co ld War menace. Author John Boileau introduces the team of naval architects and engineers who tested prototypes in Halifax Harbour during the 1950s and 1960s. Their efforts led to HMCS Bras d'Or, the ultra-modern hydrofoi l ve sse l th at e stab lis hed an oth er world record before it was mothballed. Like the Avro Arrow story, 'Fastest in the World' exposes how brilliant innovation is not a guarantee of success for Canadian designers." Fine

Hamilton Primavera Press 1972 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good- Inscribed By Author
359 pp, 9" H. Inscribed on title page: "Best Wishes / Helen E. Britton". "Set in Eastern Ontario, the story has a prologue set in the atmosphere of a village at a time just before the First World War and opens in a town, Rossac, on the St. Lawrence River, following the interlinking lives of characters from the end of the Second World War through the 1950s and into the 'new morality' of the late 1960s and the present decade (1970s). Idyllic love stories, loneliness, the machinations of frustrated passions, the violence and tragedies of a sex-drug culture, all enter into the story; and at its hub is a crippled physician-philosopher who is both observer and counselor to the characters." BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE., Castronovo, David.
13 Castronovo, David. BLOKES: THE BAD BOYS OF ENGLISH LITERATURE.
New York Continuum 2009 0826428320 / 9780826428325 Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
197 pp, large 8vo (9 3/16" H). "They came from unpromising places and unglamorous backgrounds. They crashed the Establishment party in one generation, raided the citadels of culture, and brought their idioms, themes, and passions to the center of British life. The blokes were writers who revitalized British drama, fiction, poetry, and criticism. This is the story, told in a series of profiles, of New Britannia. The cast of characters includes playwrights John Osborne and Arnold Wesker, novelist Kingsley Amis, critic Kenneth Tynan, poet Philip Larkin, fiction writer Alan Sillitoe, plus lesser-known figures such as John Braine, David Storey, Stan Barstow, and Keith Waterhouse - up to more contemporary writers like Martin Amis and Nick Hornby. The central idea of this book is how these writers, and others, transformed British heritage - how they worked with the materials of their own backgrounds, the class system, tradition, and artistic convention to make new art. They took their place in a long line of writers who thrived on grit: Daniel Defoe, Charles Dickens, Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence. (It) is an entertaining and insightful survey of a group of disparate writers who had a profound and enduring impact upon British literary culture." Dust jacket has minor wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, tiny tear at top of rear flap-fold, minor rubbing.

15 Corrigan, Gordon. MUD, BLOOD AND POPPYCOCK: BRITAIN AND THE FIRST WORLD WAR.
London Cassell 2003 0304359556 / 9780304359554 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
431 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w maps, photographs, diagrams. "The First World War was a unique experience for the United Kingdom: the only time Britain fielded a mass army that opposed the main enemy in the primary theatre of war. One consequence of this 'continental commitment' was that Britain suffered many more casualties in 1914-18 than in the Second World War, a factor that has coloured post-1945 attitudes to 'the Great War'. Yet, as Gordon Corrigan reveals, the First World War was neither unnecessary nor badly conducted - two claims made with such frequency in the 1960s that they became the new orthodoxy. The British Army did make mistakes during the First World War, but most were honest errors made by men as well trained and as well prepared as they could be, given the unprecedented expansion of the pre-1914 army into a force of over three million men and women. (He has) come to the conclusion that Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, far from being the 'butcher and bungler' of popular belief, was the man who took a tiny British army and expanded it, trained it and prepared it, until it was the only Allied army capable of defeating the Germans militarily in 1918." Very slight cigarette odor, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling, very light rubbing.

17 Ferguson, John. With Stan & Shirley Fischler. THUNDER AND LIGHTNING.
Scarborough, Ontario Prentice-Hall 1989 0139206469 / 9780139206467 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good
334 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w photographs. "If the Montreal Canadiens had a weakness in the early 1960s it was size. Too often, small Canadiens were being battered against the boards and checked out of action. In 1963, that problem was solved, and a big part of the solutions was John Ferguson. Chosen out of the American Hockey Leauge by Frank Selke, Ferguson showed up in training camp with a reputation as a good hockey player, and one who hadn't lost a fight in the AHL. He lived up to his reputation during his first game in Boston. At the opening faceoff, he got into a fight with Ted Green, which he won. Not only that, Ferguson proceeded to score twice in that game, which ended in a 4-4 tie. John Ferguson played for the Canadiens for eight years, until he retired in 1971. During those years, he shared in five Stanley Cups, played five hundred games, scored 145 goals and 158 assists, and spent 1214 minutes in the penalty box. An extremely aggressive forward, he acted as the club's policeman and extended his dislike of opposing players off the ice. Ferguson retired from the Canadiens in 1971 to begin a new career as a businessman. He came back to hockey as Coach and General Manager of the New York Rangers in 1976, then as General Manager of the Winnipeg Jets, and finally as General Manager of Team Canada. Having retired once more from hockey, (he) will dedicate himself to his second great sporting love, as President of The Windsor Raceway." Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, minor edge browning light crease down front flap.

"(O)ffers a colourful and thoroughly researched account of Canada's silent service, from its unexpected inauguration in British Columbia on the first day of the Great War to its uncertain future today. After describing the activities of the submarine service during and after World War I, (the author) details the careers of the Canadians who served with distinction in British submarines in all theatres of World War II. She goes on to examine the modern era, from the rebirth of the service in the 1960s to the present, and provides little-known information about the controversial Conservative initiative for nuclear-powered submarines in 1987. Above all, this vivid account celebrates the individuals who dedicated and in some instances gave their lives to Canada's submarine service." One tiny edge bump.
