THE DESERT GENERALS., Barnett, Correlli.
4 Barnett, Correlli. THE DESERT GENERALS.
William Kimber, London, 1960, second edition.
320 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "The first portrait is of Sir Richard O'Connor, who won the fantastic victories over Graziani's Italians in 1940. The author shows that th e credit for the daring and unorthodox planning is due to O'Connor and not to Wavell; he puts forward a convincing argument to show that Tripoli could have been taken - and the North African campaign ended - in February, 1941, if the Prime Mi n i s t e r had not diverted forces to Greece. Of Sir Alan Cunningham, first commander of 8th Army, there is a picture of imaginative insight. The author shows that the crisis in the 'Crusader' battle of November, 1941, was caused by twenty years o f ne gl ec t a nd traditionalism, although the brunt fell on Cunningham, then a sick man. In Sir Neil Ritchie, next 8th Army commander, the author sees personified the characteristics of the Establishment - rigidity, social charm and professiona l c on ser vat ism . H e shows how Ritchie was beaten in the summer battles of 1942 by the dynamism of German leadership. With 8th Army in danger of complete collapse, the C.-in-C., Sir Claude Auchinleck, took over direct command in order to try t o sa ve the Midd le E as t a nd its vital oil. In the next few weeks he won a great but never officially acknowledged victory in the First Battle of Alamein. The author believes that this was the true turning point of the war, making possible the ' Torch ' l andi ngs i n Fre nch Nor th Africa. Auchinleck's reward was dismissal - as, the author shows, a political scapegoat. Although Field-Marshal Montgomery has recounted his own story, there is another side to it, told here for the first tim e. Th e au thor discus ses th e pl ans f or Montgomery's first victory of Alam Halfa which had been made by Auchinleck and his officers; he submits that the Battle of Alamein was not impeccably handled, and that Rommel's escape afterwards was not o wing to rain , but to the hesita nt, ' broad front' pursuit - the very error of which Montgomery was to accuse Eisenhower in 1944." Previous owner's small bookplate and small light stain on front pastedown, light browning to edges of text block, minor w rinkli ng at top/bott om of sp ine, o ne pag e with tiny edge tear and crease. Dust jacket has wear/wrinkles/tiny chips at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds, small surface paper loss at top of spine, light browning on spine and flap-fold s, two ed ge tear s with creases - old tap e repai r, one tiny edge tear, light wear on flap-folds. WOLFE AT QUEBEC., Hibbert, Christopher.
9 Hibbert, Christopher. WOLFE AT QUEBEC.
Longmans, Green, London, 1959, first edition.
194 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates, maps. "In the early hours of the morning on 13th September 1759, a British flotilla drifted silently on the ebb tide down the St Lawrence River towards Quebec. A last and desperate at tempt was being made to capture the town before the ice closed over the river and made further operations that season impossible. By dawn over 4,000 men had disembarked from the landing craft and clambered up the steep and slippery slopes on t o t h e Plains of Abraham. The French were taken completely by surprise and the battle that followed was short and dramatic. By noon the fate of Canada had been decided. In describing the events of this day and the bitter and seemingly hopel e ss s i eg e th at preceded it, (the author) has relied entirely upon contemporary sources, some of which were not available when previous accounts were written. For this reason the story which has emerged is in some respects an unfamiliar one an d the in ci den ta l p ortrait of Wolfe, stripped of the sentimental veneer which two centuries of adulation have built around him, is one which will surprise many readers. (This book) provides not only a vivid account of what has been described a s the most im port ant eve nt in the history of the 18th century, but a fascinating portrait of one of its most famous soldiers." 192 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). "When the hated factor caught Mata the tinker at the salmon poaching he planned a terrible punishment for him. And it was on the night of Mata's ordeal in the midst of a fearful thunderstorm that Calum Og discovered how the mysterious Cave of Gold had been given its name. But the thunderstorm was the start of a blight upon the little crofting township - week after week of rain and mist, the crops failing for want of sun. And then the Stranger arrived, bringing with him sunshine and fresh hope. On the same day the factor fell from his horse, and lay unconscious, unable to prevent the Stranger from leading the boys in the building of a great fish-trap. But when the herring shoals came up the loch, and the trap was filled with fish, the men turned against the Stranger and drove him from the township; and the seemingly endless sunshine turned to torrential rain. And still the Cave remained a mystery to Calum Og until the night of the flood - the night of the 13th of October 1877, when he learned the secret of that Cave of Gold....What really happened to Mata the tinker? Was it mere chance that the factor fell from his horse the day the Stranger came ashore? Who is the Stranger? Set in the Isle of Skye in the harsh 1870s, (this book) will be enjoyed by everyone with a sense of history and a taste for the unusual." They were more often abroad than not: in the Flanders of Marlborough and the Spain of Peterborough (who turned them into dragoons), in Gibraltar and the West Indies, in Burma and Afghanistan and Africa. THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE MONGOL QUEENS: HOW THE DAUGHTERS OF GENGHIS KHAN RESCUED HIS EMPIRE., Weatherford, Jack.
18 Weatherford, Jack. THE SECRET HISTORY OF THE MONGOL QUEENS: HOW THE DAUGHTERS OF GENGHIS KHAN RESCUED HIS EMPIRE.
New York Crown 2010 0307407152 / 9780307407153 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
317 pp, 9 1/2" H. B&w map, family trees, drawings. "The Mongol queens of the thirteenth century ruled the greatest empire the world has ever known. Yet sometime near the end of the century, censors cut a section from 'The Secret History of the Mongols', leaving a single tantalizing quote from Genghis Khan: 'Let us reward our female offspring." Only this hint of a father's legacy for his daughters remained of a much larger story. The queens of the Silk Route turned their father's conquests into the world's first truly international empire, fostering trade, education, and religion throughout their territories and creating an economic system that stretched from the Pacific to the Mediterranean. Outlandish stories of these powerful queens trickled out of the empire, shocking the citizens of Europe and the Islamic world. After Genghis Khan's death in 1227, conflicts erupted between his daughters and daughters-in-law; what began as a war between powerful women soon became a war against women in power as brother turned against sister, son against mother. At the end of this epic struggle, the dynasty of Mongol queens had seemingly been extinguished forever, as even their names were erased from the historical record. One of the most unusual and important warrior queens of history arose to avenge the wrongs, rescue the tattered shreds of the Mongol Empire, and restore order to a shattered world. Putting on her quiver and picking up her bow, Queen Manduhai led her soldiers through victory after victory. At the conclusion of his magnificently researched and groundbreaking narrative, the author notes that despite their mystery and the efforts to erase them from our collective memory, the deeds of these Mongol queens inspired great artists from Chaucer and Milton to Goethe and Puccini, and so their stories live on today. With (this book, he) restores the queens' missing chapter to the annals of history." Wrinkling at top of spine, very small red remaider dot on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and at top of rear flap.
