2 Buker, George E. SWAMP SAILORS: RIVERINE WARFARE IN THE EVERGLADES 1835-1842.
University of Florida, Gainesville, 1975.
152 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0813003520 Map endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Until the Second Seminole War the United States Navy had generally employed the Federalist doctrine (cruiser-commerce-raiding), but the un iqueness of this Indian conflict caused the navy to adopt a new offensive strategy. For the first time in history the American Navy was pitted against a nonmaritime foe. There were no single merchantmen to attack; there were no cruisers t o e n g a g e in single-ship combat; there were no enemy fleets to be repelled from the nation's harbors. Instead, there were Indians practicing guerilla tactics in a watery environment - the Everglades of Florida. Athough it was not apparent at t h e be gi nn in g o f the war, the navy's only hope for victory lay in the development of a strategy for riverine warfare. It was a kind of warfare that demanded specially trained combat groups, organized for sustained land/sea operations. I t r equ ir ed jo int ac tio n wi th the army. It called for a naval command familiar with setting up and directing complex operations and diverse forces to achieve an overall objective. In developing a strategy of riverine warfare, United States Nav y po lic y e volv ed f rom a de fe nsi ve to an offensive position, from a society of highly individualistic and inflexible sea captains into a well-meshed cooperative unit capable of working not only alone but also with the army. Between 1835 and 1842, the nav y cam e of age. Her e i s a dramatic account of that vital time, enhanced by an awesome setting, which will engage and enlighten both the scholar of naval history and the armchair sailor." 5 Davis, Kenneth S. DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER: SOLDIER OF DEMOCRACY.
New York Konecky & Konecky 156852059X / 9781568520599 Reprint Very Good+ Very Good+
566 pp, 9 1/2" H. Undated reprint of the 1945 edition, c1999. A volume in the "Leaders of Our Time" series. "On June 6, 1944, a decisive day in the history of the Western World, the radio had been blaring reports of the progress of American troops on the Normandy beachhead since long before dawn. The man whose portrait is examined in this book had reached the supreme moment of his career. This work is a first hand account of Dwight D. Eisenhower from his early years in Texas through his military service in World War II. It documents his training at West Point, his tour of duty in WWI and then his meteoric rise as war leader and stateman in World War II. Extensive interviews that the author conducted with Eisenhower in London in the days leading up to the Normandy invasion shed new light on the strategic thinking that lay behind the momentous plans that were then being formulated. They also provide an intimate look at Eisenhower the man and the deeply held sense of values that would see him through the war and then later inform his tenure as president of the United States." Minor browning at top edge of spine, very light wrinkling at bottom of spine. Dust jacket has very small dent on front hinge.

302 pp, 9 1/4" H. Pictorial endpapers, b&w illustrations. "Drawing on his unmatched firearms knowledge and combat experience, Kyle carefully chose ten guns to help tell (American history): the American long rifle, Spencer repeater, Colt. 45 revolver, Winchester rifle, Springfield 1903 rifle, Thompson submachine gun, 1911 pistol, M1 Garand, .38 Special police revolver, and the M16 rifle platform Kyle himself used as a SEAL. Through them, he revisits thrilling turning points in American history, including the single sniper shot that turned the tide of the Revolutionary War, the firearms designs that proved decisive at Gettsyburg, the 'gun that won the West', and the weapons that gave U.S. soldiers an edge in the world wars and beyond. This is also the story of how firearms innovation, creativity, and industrial genius has constantly pushed American history - and power - forward." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. OPERATION ELVIS., Levy, Alan. Illustrated by Dedini.
13 Levy, Alan. Illustrated by Dedini. OPERATION ELVIS.
New York Henry Holt 1960 Third Printing Very Good Very Good- Dedini.
117 pp, 8vo (8 1/2" H). B&w cartoons. "A book as outrageously comic as the phenomenon it explores, 'Operation Elvis' offers a trenchant view of a modern cultural diaster: the mass hysteria that all but thwarted the transformation of a million-dollar idol into an $83.20-a-month GI. On March 24, 1958, the United State Army undertook a mission as hazardous as Valley Forge, as complex as a D-Day invasion. The objective: to convert a controversial millionaire (nomenclature: Elvis 'The Pelvis' Presley) into an army private and treat him 'just like everyone else'. Operation Elvis was staged before a grandstand many times larger than all the auditoriums Elvis Presley had ever filled. Teenagers twitched, veterans and servicemen raised apprehensive eyes, and reporters raced for seats on the nearest aisle. Soon the dignitaries began to arrive. Chamber of Commerce groups, senators, and congressmen crowded toward the center of the stage, all of them offering advice. The cast was swelled by Frauleins on both sides of the Elbe, by Russians, and by the State Department brass. The Army, scanning the terrain, discovered itself in a state of siege. By hewing to its original battleline, it had quickly been outflanked. Are the Selective Service and Celebrity systems truly compatible? Is the Mother of Democracy sturdy enough to support the unlikely marriage of the two? What did the active service duty of US53310761 reveal about our Army? About our hero? About ourselves? These are just a few of the questions raised in this wry and amusing book." Light wear at top/bottom of spine and at bottom rear corner, tiny dent at bottom of spine and on bottom of text block. Dust jacket has very light edge wear/wrinkling including a crease at bottom of spine, two very small edge tears, light rubbing/soiling, light toning to spine and flap-folds, light fading to title colour on spine.
