THE SMUG MINORITY., Berton, Pierre.
3 Berton, Pierre. THE SMUG MINORITY.
Toronto McClelland & Stewart 1968 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good-
160 pp, 8 3/4" H. "This is a book about freedom - and the lack of it - in Canada: freedom from useless and often degrading toil; freedom from want and freedom from ignorance. It is Berton's thesis, documented by public statments made over the past generation, that a smug minority of business and political leaders has conspired to inhibit that freedom. The author indicts his fellow countrymen for failing to invest in human beings in the same way that they invest in power plants, highways, and gold mines. His researches into poverty in Canada and into the inequalities of the education system will shock a good many readers just as his theories on work and leisure will enrage others raised in the Calvinist ethic. The book ranges over a wide variety of topics: the hippie movement in Toronto's Yorkville village - the author's personal experiences in a Yukon mining camp - the future of educational television in Canada - and the Chamber of Commerce's abortive 'Operation Freedom' campaign. But always Berton hammers on his central theme - that the nation has been held back by an inbred power-elite: 'Selfish, narrow, short-sighted men unable to grasp the vision of the future, imprisoned by a bookkeeping attitude to life, creeping silently and blindly along at the tag end of the parade of progress'." Small stamp mark on free front endpaper. Dust jacket has light wrinkling at top of spine, light to moderate rubbing - mostly on rear panel, one small edge tear archivally taped.

5 Cruywagen, Dennis. (Nelson Mandela.) THE SPIRITUAL MANDELA: FAITH AND RELIGION IN THE LIFE OF NELSON MANDELA.
Watertown, MA Imagine 2018 1623545307 / 9781623545307 First American Edition Hard Cover Near Fine Very Good+
224 pp, 9 1/4" H. "Nelson Mandela revealed nothing about his personal religious beliefs in his writings or in his public pronouncements. He purposely avoided discussing them in his autobiography for political reasons, but those who were closest to him knew he held Christian views. At Mandela's request, the final components of his funeral followed the Methodist service. 'The Spiritual Mandela' explores the ways in which Nelson Mandela balanced Christianity with traditional African beliefs and with his political views, and how he reconciled his faith with the fact that religion had often been used as a tool to oppress his people. (The author) traces the spiritual aspects of Mandela's life from his youth in a Thembu village, to his education at Wesleyan and Methodist mission schools, to his time as an activist, his incarceration on Robben Island, and the years thereafter." A few very tiny dents on bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

9 Farmer, Penelope, ed. SISTERS: AN ANTHOLOGY.
London Allen Lane / Penguin Press 1999 0713993022 / 9780713993028 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good+ Very Good+
454 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H). "As one of three sisters herself, Penelope Farmer sets her exploration of sisterhood in an autobiographical framework, describing loving and not so loving sisters in the past and present generations on all sides of her family. With the help of writers in many fields and over many centuries, she guides us through the peaks and troughs of sistery love, both between sisters and between sisters and brothers - from childhood, separation, love, marriage and parenthood, to old age and death itself. Famous literary sisters appear: the Brontes; Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell; the Mitfords; Mary Lamb and brother Charles; Vera Brittain. Alongside them the theatrical and musical ones: Joan Fontaine and Olivia de Havilland; Maria Callas and her sister; Jacqueline du Pre and hers; Mozart and his sister. Then there are the well-known fictional sisters: the March sisters; Dorothea and Celia Brooke; the Schlegel sisters; Ursula and Gudrun from 'Women in Love'. And many not so well-known sisters, both fictional and non-fictional besides. We observe the sisterly bonds of bees, lions, elephants, gorillas and chimpanzees. We are guided by Richard Dawkins through the genetics of ant colonies. And, throughout, we are asked to reflect on the nature of sisterhood itself. Is a sister born not made? What is the essence of the sisterly bond? What relationship does that bond have to the myth of sisterhood constructed around it? - a myth leading to all those symbolic sisterhoods, of nurses, nuns, feminists and so forth, a section on whom concludes the book. Through poetry, prose, autobiography, memoir, science and anthroplogy , Penelope Farmer pieces together the world of sisters and sisterhood, creating a rich tapestry of evocative and often moving writing that will find echoes in the experience of all who have or are sisters, or even just those who would like to have had them." Slight bump to top/bottom of front hinge. Dust jacket has very light edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, minor rubbing, tiny dint on spine.

318 pp, 9 1/4" H. "(T)he culmination of the writing career of a man who has struggled all his life against social injustice and irrelevant religious orthodoxies. This book is more than the ecumenical discuss-ion of sex-related issues from a minister's point of view; it is a candid commentary on our time - a time of sexual revolution and human turmoil when old values are questioned and new answers must be found. By analyzing the historical and social aspects of sex, sexuality and sexism and the role of the clergy within the framework of the Judeo-Christian tradition, the author has woven his thoughts into a colorful fabric; his wisdom, wit and candor, combined with his superb literary skills, shine through on every page. The autobiographical data and references are an added bonus, providing insight into the nature of this visionary philosopher and lover of humankind. Regardless of your faith, and whether you attend church or synagogue regularly, sometimes or never, you will not be indifferent or bored when you read what the rabbi has to say." Book is cery clean. 307 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). "On average, people squander forty days annually compensating for things they've forgotten. Joshua Foer used to be one of those people. But after a year of memory training, he found himself in the finals of the U.S. Memory Championship. Even more important, he found a vital truth we too often forget: In every way that matters, we are the sum of our memories. (This book) draws on cutting-edge research, a surprising cultural history of memory, and venerable tricks of the mentalist's trade to transform our understanding of human remembering. Under the tutelage of top 'mental athletes', Foer learns ancient techniques once employed by Cicero to memorize his speeches and by medieval scholars to memorize entire books. Using methods that have been largely forgotten, he discovers that we can all dramatically improve our memories." Light wrinkling at bottom of spine. KIERKEGAARD AND THE TREACHERY OF LOVE. CAMBRIDGE STUDIES IN RELIGION AND CRITICAL THOUGHT 9., Hall, Amy Laura. (Soren Kierkegaard.)
17 Hall, Amy Laura. (Soren Kierkegaard.) KIERKEGAARD AND THE TREACHERY OF LOVE. CAMBRIDGE STUDIES IN RELIGION AND CRITICAL THOUGHT 9.
Cambridge University Press, (Cambridge, 2002).
222 pp, 8vo (8 15/16" H), soft cover. "This is a major study of Kierkegaard and love. Amy Laura Hall explores Kierkegaard's description of love's treachery, difficulty, and hope, reading his 'Works of Love' as a text that both deciphers and complicates the central books in his pseudonymous canon: 'Fear and Trembling', 'Repetition', 'Either/Or', and 'Stages on Life's Way'. In all of these works, the characters are, as in real life, complex and incomplete, and the conclusions are perplexing. Hall argues that a spiritual void brings each text into being, and her interpretation is as much about faith as about love. In a style that is both scholarly and lyrical, she intimates answers to some of the puzzles, making a poetic contribution to ethics and the philosophy of religion." New York Twelve 2010 0446504106 / 9780446504102 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
329 pp, large 8vo (9 1/4" H). "Life is full of choices. How do we make them? Choice is a powerful tool to define ourselves and mold our lives - but what do we know about the wants, motivations, biases, and influences that aid or hinder our endeavors? Columbia University professor Sheena Iyengar, a leading expert on choice, sets herself the Herculean task of helping us become better choosers. She asks fascinating questions: Is the desire for choice innate or created by culture? Why do we sometimes choose against our best interests? How much control do we really have over what we choose? Ultimately, she offers unexpected and profound answers, drawn from her award-winning discipline-spanning research. Here you'll learn about the complex relationship between choice and freedom, and why one doesn't always go with the other. You'll see that too much choice can overwhelm us, leading to unpleasant experiences, from 'TiVo guilt' over unwatched TV programs to confusion over health insurance plans. Perhaps most important, you'll discover how our choices - both mundane and momentous - are shaped by many different forces, visible and invisible. This remarkable book illuminates the joys and challenges of choosing, showing us how we build our lives, one choice at a time." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. THE GRAIL LEGEND., Jung, Emma & Von Franz, Marie-Louise. Translator: Andrea Dykes.

Boston Sigo Press 1986 093843408X / 9780938434085 Second Edition Soft Cover Very Good
452 pp, 9" H. B&w illustrations. "The Holy Grail and its quest is a legend which has had a powerful impact on our civilization and culture. The Grail itself is an ancient Celtic symbol of plenty as well as a Christian symbol of redemption and eternal life, the chalice which caught the blood of the crucified Christ. The story of the Grail sheds profound light on man's search for the supreme value of life, for that which makes life most meaningful. Writing in a clear and readable style, two leading women of the Jungian school of psychology present this legend as a living myth that is meaningful to modern life. We encounter such universal figures as the Fool (the naive young Perceval), the Wise Old Man (the Hermit Gornemanz), the Virgin Maiden (Blancheflor), the Loathly Damsel, and such important themes as the Waste Land, the Trinity, and the vessel of the Grail. Weaving together narrative and interpretation, the authors show us how the legend reflects not only fundamental human problems but also the dramatic psychic events which form the background of our Christian culture." Exterior - minor soiling on bottom of text block, tiny dent at top of spine, very faint creases on spine, one tiny corner crease.

Toronto Dundurn 2008 1550028022 / 9781550028027 First Edition Soft Cover Near Fine
193 pp, 9" H. B&w photographs, reproductions. "Recounts a journey that began three-quarters of a century ago in a small village inn nestled in the Laurentian Hills of Quebec. One day, the journey will end at the village cemetery, just one kilometre from the inn. The traveller is the author. The trip is not long, but is rich in rural and natural experiences along the way. Gerard Kenney takes us along the route that led him to build a lone log cabin on the small and inaccessible Lake of the Old Uncles. No roads reach the pond, only a footpath. The hours spent in the quietude of the forest cabin have resulted in the author's personal philosophy, which was inspired by his hero, Henry David Thoreau. (He) shares with his readers the evolution of his philosophy through his personal experiences with the people and the wilderness flora and fauna he has encountered on his life's journey."
