THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO TANKS OF THE WORLD., Forty, George.
201 Forty, George. THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO TANKS OF THE WORLD.
London Hermes House 2005 184477743X / 9781844777433 First Edition Hard Cover Fine Very Good-
256 pp, 4to (12" H). Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w photographs. "(A)n authoritative directory of tanks and their immediate derivatives, such as ARVs (armoured recovery vehicles), tank destroyers, command versions, bridgelayers, mine-clearers and other Funnies. It begins with a guide to the history of the tank and its evolution: the first tank action at Flers during World War I, the Blitzkrieg of 1940, the desert war in North Africa, the D-Day Funnies of the Normandy beaches, tanks used in the jungles of Korea and Vietnam, the Arab-Israeli wars and the two desert wars of the Persian Gulf. Next, there are two A-Z directories focusing on over 230 tanks, the first covering World War I and II and the inter-war years, and the second covering the post-war years. From the world's first tank, the No. 1 Lincoln Machine 'Little Willie', to the contemporary M1A2 Abrams Main Battle Tank, with its state-of-the- art weapons systems, the book covers a vast range of armoured fighting vehicles. Each entry includes a lively description and history, with a specification panel detailing the tank's official name, date, crew, weight, dimensions, armament, armour, powerplant and performance. All the tanks are accompanied by identification photographs, many of which are full-colour and have never previously been published together in one volume." Book is Fine. THE COMMANDOS AT DIEPPE: REHEARSAL FOR D-DAY. OPERATION CAULDRON, NO 4 COMMANDO ATTACK ON THE HESS BATTERY, AUGUST 19TH, 1942., Fowler, Will.
203 Fowler, Will. THE COMMANDOS AT DIEPPE: REHEARSAL FOR D-DAY. OPERATION CAULDRON, NO 4 COMMANDO ATTACK ON THE HESS BATTERY, AUGUST 19TH, 1942.
London Collins 2002 0007111258 / 9780007111251 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
256 pp, large 8vo, (9 3/8" H). B&w maps, photographs. "History's overriding view of the Dieppe raid in 1942 is that of a catastrophic disaster, with thousands of Canadian and British troops killed or captured. Often overlooked is No 4 Commando's successful supporting element of the raid to disable the heavy German guns that threatened the supporting ships at sea. No 4 Commando's training and preparation for their part in the raid was an excellent example of operational planning, its leadership was superb and its luck held. Quite apart from this first use of Commando's, this raid was also the first instance in which US troops fired shots at their European enemy in WWII. Will Fowler has been able to interview surviving members of No 4 Commando, and with extensive research of official records has pieced together a terrific blow by blow account of one of the most daring early Commando raids of the Second World War." Light wrinkling at top of spine, remainder mark on bottom of textblock, two tiny soiling specks on fore-edge of textblock, very light browning to edges of textblock. Dust jacket has light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of spine and flap-folds, minor remainder mark at bottom edge of panels/flaps.

218 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2"H). B&w maps, photos. "Joining the RAF at the beginning of the war, (Neville Duke) found himself, aged 19, as a young fighter pilot with the crack 92 Squadron at RAF Biggin Hill, in 1941. That spring and summer he survived the air battles over Northern France with the Biggin Hill Wing, often flying as wingman to the legendary 'Sailor' Malan - Fighter Command's top-scoring pilot at that time. In those months he learnt the fighter pilot's trade, lessons that were to prove invaluable when, in November, he was posted to a very different war in the Western Desert. Flying the famous 'Shark-Mouthed' P40B Tomahawk fighters with 112 Sqn, he quickly established himself as one of the most successful pilots in North Africa, winning the DFC and bar. By 1943 he was flight commander with his old 92 Squadron which had also become part of the Desert Air Force. Again flying Spitfires, he had scored twenty-one by the end of the Tunisian Campaign, was a warded the DSO, then given command of 145 Spitfire Squadron in Italy. Leading this unit in the summer of 1944 he brought his score to twenty-eight, returning home in late 1944 as the highest scoring pilot in the Mediterranean Theatre..." 179 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, Spitfire profiles. "Robert 'Buck' McNair came from Nova Scotia, the second of three sons born of a mix of Scottish and German parents. As a young man he became interested in flight, and was lucky enough to be able to fly floatplanes off the Canadian lakes. When war came, he went through flight training in Canada, sailed to England, and in the summer of 1941 found himself in the newly formed 411 Squadron RCAF. Eventually this unit began flying sweeps over Northern France and he saw his first combat actions during that autumn. An aggressive fighter pilot, he was chosen by his Canadian CO to accompany him to the besieged island of Malta in the spring of 1942, to coincide with the arrival on that island of the first Spitfires." McNair went on to win three DFCs and a DSO among other awards and although he was twice wounded, his score of victories reached 16, "with others probably destroyed and damaged. This is a remarkable story of courage and heroism by one of the Second World War's top-scoring fighter pilots who inspired his men and fellow pilots in actions above the skies of France and Malta, and who, despite being almost blind in one eye, continued to lead and spur his men onto greater actions." One very tiny corner bump to front board. Dust jacket has very minor edge wear/wrinkling, minor rubbing.

KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL., Fraser, David.
211 Fraser, David. KNIGHT'S CROSS: A LIFE OF FIELD MARSHAL ERWIN ROMMEL.
HarperCollins, New York, 1993, book club edition.
601 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0060182229 B&w photographs, maps/battle plans. "(S)hows how inspiringly spontaneous and superficially haphazard Rommel's style of leadership could be: 'Rommel believed that war is a re ckless, untidy business, and that the habits of mind of a methodical manager are alien to what is required'. Instead, his hallmarks were boldness of manoeuvre, ferocity of attack, and tenacity in pursuit. These were the qualities he display e d i n h is great battles in the North African desert; they were, David Fraser demonstrates, evident from his earliest battles in the First World War to his last, defending Fortress Europe from the Allied invasion of 1944....Rommel reached a posi ti on in w h ic h he almost inevitably became embroiled in politics. When he realized that the Allied invasion was going to succeed, he realized also that the only way to save Germany was somehow to negotiate a peace settlement. He tried to pres ent Hi t ler - to wh om he had always been devoted, and who had always shown him a particular respect and affection - with the military realities: he was branded a defeatist and ignored. But his opinions, and his apparent links (meticulously dis cuss ed b y Fras er) wi th t he Stauffenberg plotters of July 1944 - one of them, under interrogation, mentioned Rommel as a possible head of post-Hilterian Gemany - condemned him is the eyes of the Fuhrer he had served so loyally. He was offered the c hoice o f tri al b y a Peopl e's Court - a sham of course - or suicide, a state funeral and protection for his family. He chose the latter. Rommel is not, to David Fraser, a flawless hero: his failings as well as his genius are recorded here . But he ha d t hat in stinc t fo r batt le and leadership which set him apart from his contemporaries and places him among the great commanders." In this secret journal, smuggled out piecemeal before she left Germany, Fromm describes her experiences and conversations with this cast of characters that would soon play shocking roles in Hitler's Third Reich.
