New York Paddington 1977 0448221861 / 9780448221861 Very Good -
106 pp, + 6 pages of b&w illustrations, 11" H. " 'France, armee, tete d'armee, Josephine - .' These were the strangely moving, strangely revealing last words spoken by Napoleon Bonaparte as he lay dying on the isle of St. Helena in 1821. Ever since, they have contributed to the popular heroic image of the man who commanded the loyalty of millions, conquered almost the whole of Europe and lost the woman he loved. But his will, reprinted here in facsimile and translated into English for the first time, throws fascinating new light on one of the most enigmatic and extraordinary figures in history. From the detailed lists of his shirts and snuff boxes to the distribution of millions of francs, from his bitter denunciation of the 'English oligarchy and their hired assassin' to his fervent attempts to keep the Napoleonic legend alive through his son, 'The Last Will and Testament' illustrates the contradictions of the Corsican turned Frenchman, the 'petit caporal' turned 'Empereur', the man turned superman and, finally, the man." Interior - light cigarette odour, slight browning in margins of pages, otherwise clean and tight with no previous ownership marks. Exterior - light browning to edges of text block, browning to edges of covers.

London Chatto & Windus 1959 First Edition Very Good Very Good-
320 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H). VOLUME II ONLY. "David Livingstone's letters are the most important source of information about his activities, beliefs and opinions. The present collection, drawn chiefly from family archives, covers not only the whole of his career as a missionary in Bechuanaland, but also his first great crossing of the continent from Loanda to Quilimane. Extracts from a few have appeared in various biographies, but the great majority have never been published before. Vivid and sometimes extremely outspoken, they contain much detail about his relations with fellow missionaries, Boers and Native chiefs, and about his own journeys into the interior; they afford new insights into his religious outlook, conceptions of missionary enterprise, scientific and linguistic interests, and medical knowledge." London Michael Joseph 1954 Second Printing Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
275 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). Pictorial endpapers, b&w plates. "John Wetherell was a native of Whitby, one of the thirteen children of Nathan Wetherell, a whaling captain. He was born in 1780, and his father died in 1789 - killed, according to Wetherell, in a skirmish with Eskimos in Davis Strait. Wetherell himself died, probably in New York, sometime after 1834. He left behind him an autobiography, in three volumes of manuscript amounting altogether to a thousand pages. It had been the object of a fruitless search by students of the period until, a few years ago, Mrs Anne Klein of New York, an enthusiastic collector of rare nautical books, discovered it at the New York auction of the library of the late Gabriel Wells." 467 pp, 9 1/4" H. B&w illustrations. "(T)akes readers from the Bohemian capital's thousand-year-old castle to the bomb shelters of London, from the desolate prison ghetto of Terezin to the highest councils of European and American government. Albright reflects on her discovery of her family's Jewish heritage many decades after the war, on her Czech homeland's tangled history, and on the stark moral choices faced by her parents and their generation. Often relying on eyewitness descrip-tions, she tells the story of how millions of ordinary citizens were ripped from familiar surroundings and forced into new roles as exiled leaders and collaborators, victims and killers. These events of enormous complexity are nevertheless shaped by concepts familair to any growing child: fear, trust, adaptation, the search for identity, the pressure to conform, the quest for independence, and the difference between right and wrong. At once a deeply personal memoir and an incisive work of history, 'Prague Winter' serves as a guide to the future through the lessons of the past - as seen through the eyes of one of the international community's most respected and fascinating figures." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wear/wrinkling at top/bottom of hinges and flap-folds.

London Oxford University Press / Institute of Race Relations 1967 First Edition. Very Good Good+
338 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H). "As a result of the dramatic Unilateral Declaration of Independence by Ian Smith and his Cabinet in November 1965, Rhodesia is now the centre of an international crisis, a focal point in a rapidly changing scene. But the act should not be seen as an isolated incident; it is part of a political and constitutional pattern which has developed gradually, and of which the outstanding feature is the division between Europeans and Africans. In this careful and thorough study Mr. Barber traces the various strands which make up this pattern, analysing the origins of this tragically divided society and its relations with the rest of Southern Africa, and giving a detailed account of the political developments since 1960 which culminated in the U.D.I." A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633., Bartholomew, J.G.
17 Bartholomew, J.G. A LITERARY & HISTORICAL ATLAS OF ASIA. EVERYMAN'S LIBRARY NO. 633.
London J.M. Dent & Sons Very Good Very Good
226 pp, 6 7/8" H. No publication date, but an early edition as there is no mention of the First World War. Map endpapers, decorated title page. Profusely illustrated with colour and b&w maps, plus 10 plates depicting coins. "(T)he present volume deals with the countries of Asia, whose history and geography, and whose possibilities great and grave, are alike reflected in the maps and charts that follow. When Queen Elizabeth (I) granted to certain merchants of London a charter that gave them a roving commission to trade in the East Indies, she could not foresee the immense developments that were to rise from that adventurous commerce between east and west. The successive maps of India with their frontier changes mark the gradual advance of an old world toward the new one knit by powerful mutual ties to the Isle of Britain; and recently we have seen what it is to be hoped will open a greater era for those regions, marked by a return to the old captial of Delhi, and a resuming of ancient rites which first gained their symbolism in those lands. But Asia, as Japan has taught us and as China will undoubtedly teach us again, has her own destiny to bear out, apart from our European interests and politics; and it is in that aspect we need to study her on the lines laid down and made clear and positive in this volume. It is not the military records, the charts of mutinies and battle-fields, interesting as they are, which are alone important; but those showing the conditions, physical and climatic, of the country; the dispersion of the tongues, the sites of the old religions, the wealth and tillage of the earth with its fruits, grain and minerals, its rice fields and tea plantations; the prevalance of rain, sun and trade-winds; and the course of the sea-roads that affect its human and industrial life...In this Asian Atlas, of small dimensions as it requires to be to fit its pocket, Irkutsk in the north, 'far Mandalay', the details of the East and West Indies, the route of Marco Polo, coasts like the Carnatic, towns like Lucknow and Cawnpore, Lhasa, 'the Forbidden City' of Tibet, and Matsuye, the old capital of Idzumo, which Lafcadio Hearn describes, all have their record." Includes "A Brief Survey of the Coinages of Asia from the Earliest Times to the Present Day" by J. Allan, "A Gazetteer of Towns and Places in Asia having an Historic Interest" and an Index. Slight fading to spine color, small are of minor color loss on top of text block, very light browning to edges of text block, minor edge wear, small dplit in paper of front inside hinge, browning to pages 110/111 due to laid in newspaper clipping, slight browning to free endpapers - tiny foxing mark on front endpaper.
