SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700., Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna.
3 Arch, Nigel and Marschner, Joanna. SPLENDOUR AT COURT: DRESSING FOR ROYAL OCCASIONS SINCE 1700.
London Unwin Hyman, London, (1987), Ist edition. 1987 0713526610 / 9780713526615 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
128 pp, 10 1/2" H. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour with photographs, reproductions, drawings. "(P)rovides a lively picture of contrasting courtly scenes through the ages. It takes us from the paralysingly formal Court of Queen Anne to the outlandish ostentation of fifty years later when the Prince of Wales's dancing feet twinkled with 30,000 Pounds worth of diamonds attached to his shoe buckles. It conjures up the social butterflies of the Victorian age and a young debutante in the 1920's having difficulty tucking the essential three white feathers into her fashionably bobbed hair style. The fairy tale dresses and gold encrusted uniforms described and illustrated in this book have echoed or defied the fashions of the world right up to the present day. The last debutante to be presented at Court left Buckingham Palace in 1958, but in ceremonies such as the State Opening of Parliament courtly costume and tradition still linger with us." Spine is slightly twisted, minor toning on pastedowns. Dust jacket has light wear at bottom of front flap-fold, light edge wrinkling - mainly at top of rear panel, very soft crease down rear panel.

4 Bergstein, Rachelle. WOMEN FROM THE ANKLE DOWN: THE STORY OF SHOES AND HOW THEY DEFINE US.
New York Harper 2012 0061969613 / 9780061969614 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good Nami Matsuo Scott.
284 pp, 9 1/4" H. Small b&w illustrations. "What is it about a pair of shoes that so enchants women of all ages, demographics, political affiliations, and style tribes? Part social history, part fashion record, part pop-culture celebration, (this book) seeks to answer that question as it unfolds the story of shoes in the twentieth century. The tale begins in the rural village of Bonito, Italy, with a visionary young shoe-maker named Salvatore Ferragamo and ends in New York City with a fictional socialite and trend-setter named Carrie Bradshaw. Along the way it stops in Hollywood, where Judy Garland first slipped on her ruby slippers; New Jersey, where Nancy Sinatra heard something special in a song about boots; and the streets of Manhattan, where a transit-worker strike propelled women to step into cutting-edge athletic shoes. Beginnng with the well-heeled suffragettes in the 1910s, women have fought for greater freedom and mobility, a struggle that exploded in the 1960s with the women's liberation move-ment and culminated in the new millenium with our devotion to personal choice. Featuring interviews with designers, historians, and cultural experts, and a cast of real-life characters, from Marilyn Monroe to Jane Fonda, from Gwen Stefani to Manolo Blahnik, (it) is a lively, compelling look at the evolution of modern woman and the fashion that reflects - and has shaped - their lives." Light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine - also tiny tear at top of spine. Dust jacket has light edge wear/wrinkling at top of hinges, minor rubbing.

"(T)akes us behind the royal image - behind the panoply of royal fashion. With rare know ledge and informed wit Colin McDowell explains how the requirements of protocol and public relations combine to define the boundaries of royal style - not only in terms of clothes but also performance on state occasions and overseas travel and, i n d e ed, at all the crucial moments of the Royal Year. His own outstanding drawings, as well as a marvellous selection of photographs, illustrate and enlarge on the story. Colin McDowell's meticulous research, and his privileged access to designe rs , su ppliers and other sources closely involved in the creation and maintenance of royal style bring a very special authority to this fascinating and detailed survey. (It) concentrates on the style of four Queens, each of whom has or had a disti nct a nd individual style that epitomized the monarchy of her day. Two other ladies of remarkable style are added to complete the picture: one, Wallis Simpson, who became Duchess of Windsor, and who might have been Queen....but who, it can be argu ed, was un suitable exactly because of her style; and another, who all trust in due course will be Queen: Princess Diana, whose own style so happily does so much to glamorize and popularize the monarchy of today." New York Portfolio / Penguin 2013 1591846161 / 9781591846161 First Edition Hard Cover Very Good Very Good
275 pp, 9 1/4" H. Colour photographs. "(Tamara) Mellon's business savvy, creative eye, and flair for design built Jimmy Choo into a premier name in the competitive fashion industry. Over time, Mellon grew Jimmy Choo into a billion-dollar brand. She became the British prime minister's trade envoy and was honored by the Queen with the Order of the British Empire - yet it's her personal glamour that keeps her an object of global media fascination. 'Vogue' photographed her weddig. 'Vanity Fair' covered her divorce and the criminal trial that followed. 'Harper's Bazaar' toured her London town house and her New York mansion, right down to the closets. In creating the shoes that became a fixture on 'Sex and the City' and red carpets around the world, Mellon relied on her own impeccable sense of what the customer wanted - because she 'was' that customer. What she didn't know at the time was that success would come at a high price - after struggles with an obstinate business partner, a conniving first CEO, a turbulent marriage, and a mother who tried to steal her hard-earned cash. Now Mellon shares the whole larger-than-life story, with shocking details that have never been presented before." Minor lean to spine, remainder mark on bottom of text block, very light waviness to edges of text block. Dust jacket has very light rubbing, very light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds.
