343 pp, 8vo 8 3/4" H. B&w maps/battle plans, reproductions. "(A) classic eyewitness account of the Anglo-Zulu War. The author was a man of action and a writer who had remarkable insight into contemporary attitudes. His account of the first phase of the famous campaign is the only one by a professional journalist, and it includes descriptions of the massacre at Isandlwana and the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift. As Special Correspondent for the London 'Standard', (he) joined Lord Chelmsford's Centre Column and attached himself to the officers of the Natal Native Contingent. He was the first man across when the column entered Zulu territory on 11 January, and he witnessed the opening shots of the campaign at the storming of Sihayo's Kraal. When Lord Chelmsford set out on reconnaissance from the doomed camp at Islandlwana on the 22nd, Norris-Newman was with him; he gives a vivid and powerful account of the events of that day, culminating in the return to the site of the massacre and a night spent camped among the dead. (He) also witnessed the aftermath of Rorke's Drift, later accompanying the Eshowe Relief column. Present at the battle of Gingindhlovu, he was the first man to reach the besieged garrison. Originally published in 1880, (this book) has been the foundation for many subsequent studies of the Zulu campaign and presents the full contemporary record." Small Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper. Dust jacket has some minor rubbing, minor edge wrinkling.

Transcripts of official AIB reports are also included for 15 recent accidents which reveal the painstak ing process involved. A comprehensive log of all British military aircraft accidents since 1966 (to the time of printing) is a major feature of the book, supported by a selection of photographs which have not seen widespread publication befor e . 276 pp, large 8vo (9 7/16" H). B&w photographs, maps, diagrams. "The RAF's Air Sea Rescue Service saved thousands of aircrews during the Second World War, often in the most challenging conditions. This wide-ranging, authoritative account draws on over 40 first-hand testimonies and official reports from the National Archives, as well as dramatic, previously unpublished photographs. It explores Air Sea Rescue action in three operational areas - northwest Europe, the Mediterranean and the Far East - and features a wide variety of rescue craft: RAF or Royal Navy launches, airborne lifeboats, aircraft such as the Lysander or specialist amphibians and flying boats. In-depth research into official records reveals how the Service was formed and how it evolved in wartime years; it also provides many fascinating details of the training and equipment on which physical survival was to depend. Several of the compelling individual accounts, from new archival research or interviews with surviving members of the Goldfish Club, appear for the first time in print. They vividly evoke the reality of being shot down at sea, sometimes drifting for days awaiting rescue, and the variety of forms in which this eventually came." Place, date and signature in ink on free front endpaper, minor wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has minor edge wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, very light rubbing and two faint rub lines on rear panel.

67 Prien, Jochen and Rodeike, Peter. Translated by David Johston. Dust jacket art by Jerry Crandall. MESSERSCHMITT Bf 109 F, G, & K SERIES: AN ILLUSTRATED STUDY.
Schiffer, Atglen, PA, 1993, first edition.
208 pp, 4to (11 1/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0887404243 Profusely illustrated with b&w and colour photographs, b&w drawings/diagrams. "During its ten years as the Luftwaffe's standard fighter, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 had to adapt to keep up with the rapid pace of technological developments, and the various operational demands which were placed upon it. The result was a multiplicity of variants, and few aircraft appeared in as many variations as did the Bf 109. A significant n umber of publications have attempted to come to grips with this multiplicity. This new work stands out through its methodology, which has led to new, and different results. Supported by a large number of mostly until now unpublished photogra p h s o f the Bf 109, selected from more than 20,000, and detailed line drawings, this book offers a concise overview of the later versions of the Bf 109 based on the latest known information. This presentation is based not just on well-known pub li ca ti o ns a nd handbooks, but on unknown material as well - in particular the loss reports submitted by Luftwaffe units, as well as extensive factory and RLM records. It has been possible to gather details of more than 21,000 machines from the se rec ord s, de tai ls which have enabled the authors to correct errors present in existing publications." WHO SANK SURCOUF? THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PRIDE OF THE FRENCH NAVY., Rusbridger, James.
68 Rusbridger, James. WHO SANK SURCOUF? THE TRUTH ABOUT THE DISAPPEARANCE OF THE PRIDE OF THE FRENCH NAVY.
London Century 1991 0712639756 / 9780712639750 Very Good Very Good
209 pp, large 8vo (9 1/2" H). B&w illustrations. "At 3pm on the afternoon of 12 February 1942, the French Submarine 'Surcouf', then the largest submarine in service with any navy, sailed from Bermuda bound for Tahiti via the Panama Canal. On board were 129 French officers and men, and three members of a Royal Navy liaison team. From the moment she left Bermuda, 'Surcouf' was never seen again. Not a single scrap of wreckage, body, or anything remotely connected with this giant vessel was ever found. (She) simply disappeared. On the night of 2 July, 1941 'Surcouf', docked in Devenport, was forcibly taken over by the Royal Navy in an operation that resulted in three deaths and many injuries. A motley collection of Breton fishermen were press-ganged into geting 'Surcouf' seaworthy again. Too slow and cumbersome to serve in home waters, (she) was sent off to Canada to escort convoys across the Atlantic, but almost immediately reports circulated that 'Surcouf' had sunk some of the ships in the first convoy she was guarding. When the British liaison officer warned his superiors 'Surcouf' was a menace and should not be kept in service, he was accused of cowardice and replaced by Sub Lieutenant Roger Burney, a young, naive officer who had enjoyed a long homosexual relationship with the singer Peter Pears and the composer Benjamin Britten, and was later to have 'War Requiem' dedicated to his memory. After taking part in the unauthorised seizure of the Vichy-held islands of St Pierre and Miquelon in December 1941, which greatly angered Roosevelt and embarrassed Churchill, 'Surcouf' was ordered to sail for Tahiti. Burney warned the Admiralty that (her) crew were unreliable, and that they were openly talking about mutinying and defecting either to France or Martinique. However, the Admiralty insisted 'Surcouf' sail - it was never seen again. The vanishing of 'Surcouf' became one of the most controversial affairs to sour relations between the Allies with accusations that it had been deliberately sunk by the British or American navy." 70 Selby, John. Foreword by Major-General F.C. Graham. THE THIN RED LINE OF BALACLAVA.
London Hamish Hamilton 1970 241019001 First Edition Very Good - Good-
257 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w and colour illustrations - photographs, reproductions, maps/battle plans. "(T)he Charge (of the Light Brigade) was only a vivid firework display on the fringe of the main action. It was the Highland Brigade and in particular the 93rd Highlanders, the 'Thin Red Line' of the title, under the inspiring leadership of Sir Colin Campell who really saved the day. This new narrative of the battle, based exclusively on eye-witness reports from British, French and Russian sources, presents the conflict as a coherent whole. Here are Raglan, Cardigan, Lucan, Campbell and Scarlett; Bosquet and Canrobert; the staff officers, the surgeons, the lady spectators, the war corres-pondents, the ordinary soldiers on both sides. The political manoeuvring, the armies arriving in the Crimea, the Allied success at Alma, the ravages of cholera, Inkerman 'the soldier's battle', Tchernaya, the storming of the Redan, the siege of Sebastopol, the influence of Florence Nightingale and Maitre-chef Soyer - this is the Crimean War, a struggle which need not have taken place, which produced no decisive solution, and which demonstrated with appalling clarity the inefficiencies of the British High Command." 243 pp, large 8vo (9 13/16" H). B&w photographs, reproductions, maps. "This collection of reports sent back to Britain by newspaper correspondents in the field reflects the tensions felt during the progress of the war, including the uneasy match between patriotism and a critical appreciation of events on the battlefield. The individualism of the Victorian reporters shines through, despite the haphazard attempts of the State to manage the news, presenting, along with over fifty contemporary photographs, a fresh, first-hand perspective on a campaign which heralded the advent of twentieth-century warfare." OSWALD MOSLEY., Skidelsky, Robert.
72 Skidelsky, Robert. OSWALD MOSLEY.
Holt, Rinehart and Winston, New York, 1975.
578 pp, 8vo (8 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. ISBN 0030865808 B&w plates. "The theme of Robert Skidelsky's brilliant biography is one of double tragedy - the self-destruction of Mosley and the failure of the British ruling class to meet the challenge of the twentieth-century. Describing Mosley's early life, Mr Skidelsky lays particular stress on his landed background and his experiences in the trenches during the first world war, both vital factors in forming his character and outlook . There follows his meteoric political rise in the 1920s, when as one of the few politicians who became 'Keynesians' he seemed more than anyone to have grasped the economic problems facing Britain. Frustrated and disillusioned by Ramsay M a c D o n a l d ' s leadership, he resigned from the Labour Government in 1930 at the age of thirty-four and founded first the short-lived New Party, then the British Union of Fascists. (The author) describes Mosley's turbulent career in the 1930 s wh en t he B UF ' to ok politics into the streets', his period in prison during the war as 'Churchill's guest', and finally his present view of world problems. Mr Skidelsky squarely confronts Mosley's most controversial fascist activities: th e gre at ral lie s a nd mar che s w hich often led to violence; his attack on the Jews and his campaign in the East End of London; and his opposition to the second world war which ended with his detention under Regulartion 18B. Drawing extensively on hit her to u npub lish ed Cabi net Pape rs and police reports (including those of the Special Branch), the author skilfully disentangles fact from mythology, and presents for the first time the full evidence on which an informed judgment on Mosl ey' s mot ives and respo nsibi lit y in thes e mat ters can be based; as well as shedding a new and unexpected light on police and government attitudes to fascism in the 1930s...."
