558 pp, 16mo (6 1/8" H). Thin burgundy leather over card covers/spine - gold lettering and decoration on spine, top edge gilt. Burgundy endpapers, integral ribbon bookmark, sepiatone illustrations, including frontispiece, decorated title page. **No dustjacket or slipcase.** A collection of 56 short pieces originally published in newspapers and periodicals concerning London life and including Dickens' first published fiction. The sketches are gathered under four headings: Our Parish; Scenes; Characters; and Tales and include: The Election for Beadle; Scotland Yard; Seven Dials; Hackney-Coach Stands; Greenwich Fair; Vauxhall Gardens by Day; Omnibuses; Public Dinners; Gin-Shops; The Pawnbroker's Shop; Criminal Courts; A Visit to Newgate; A Christmas Dinner; The Dancing Academy; Shabby-Genteel People; The Boarding-House; The Tuggses at Ramsgate; The Black Veil; The Bloomsbury Christening; The Drunkard's Death, etc. Scattered tiny foxing marks on preliminary pages and a few of the last pages, light browning and tiny foxing marks on fore-edge and bottom of text block, light edge wear, a few faint rub marks on top edge gilt.
