428 pp, 9" H. Dark blue cloth with black banding, gilt lettering on spine, gilt emblem on front board. Contents: Introduction: Progress of Alchemy in Europe; The English Magicians (Roger Bacon: The True and the Legendary / The Story of Dr. John Dee / Dr. Dee's Diary / Magic and Imposture: A Couple of Knaves / The Last of the English Magicians: William Lilly / English Rosicrucians); Witches and Witchcraft (Early Histoy of Witchcraft in England / Witchcraft in England in the Seventeenth Century / The Decline of Witchcraft in England / The Witches of Scotland / The Literature of Witchcraft). Splits in paper on inside front and rear hinges - some repair, but hinges are holding firmly, small remnant of label at bottom of free front endpaper, small piece missing from top corner of pages 185 to 202 and at top corner of free rear endpaper, small double-bump to top corner of pages 203 to end of book, small light stain in margin of page 232, light browning to pages - mainly in margins, moderate edge wear to boards, light wear on spine edges, wear at top/bottom of spine, browning to edges of text block, light browning on spine and a also large liquid stain.
