540 pp, + publisher's catalogue, 16mo (6 2/16" H), thin burgundy leather over card covers/spine - gold lettering and decoration on spine, top edge gilt - in slipcase. Burgundy endpapers, decorated title page, b&w illustrations including frontispiece. In this installment of 'The Leatherstocking Tales', Natty Bumppo (a.k.a. Hawkeye of 'The Last of the Mohicans'), a wilderness scout, guides a young damsel through the dangerous forests around Lake Ontario at the time of the French and Indian War. Falling in love, he is forced to remain single as she prefers his friend, Jasper Western. Very light edge wear, two or three small splits at bottom of front pastedown. Slipcase has light to moderate edge wear with some small areas of paper loss.
