263 pp, 8" H. Decorated red cloth binding with white lettering on spine and front board, top edge gilt. B&w photographs (collated). Inscribed on front free endpaper: "Sincerely yours / WD Flatt / Port Nelson / Ont". Signed, typed letter laid in - blindstamped "Lakehurst Villa / Port Nelson Ont" at top (8" H x 10" D, folded in half before typing, then folded again) - to Rev. P.F. McLaren, Russell, Ont., dated August 21st., 1917. In it, he mentions writing 'The Trail of Love', his family, the start of his lumber operations in Muskoka and his distress that, during the current war, people seem less respectful of the Sabbath day. From the Foreword: "It was my good fortune to be born of parents who hewed their home out of the Canadian wilderness, and to spend my early years among the pioneers of Wentworth and Halton Counties in the Province of Ontario, the simplicity and honesty of whose lives has been steadfastly engraved upon my memory. As a result, it is perhaps only natural that a most persistent call has come to me to record in a way that will be imperishable a few of the virtues of these honest and upright lives." Contents: The Canadian Pioneers; The Forests; Incidents in Connection with the Lumber Business; The Story of Trout Creek Farm; Observations Along the Trail. The book is complete and holding together in its binding, but is quite loose and would benefit from being resewn. Foxing to most pages, small tear at bottom of page 23 and one illustration page - archivally taped, dog-ear crease on page 187/8, 2" split in paper at bottom of inside rear hinge, light edge wear a general light rubbing to boards and spine, browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block, slight wear to top edge gilt.
