742 pp in two volumes - deep maroon cloth with gilt lettering and decoration on spines and front boards, top edges gilt. Red marbled endpapers, b&w frontispieces and decorated title pages. A few b&w plates, plus a photograph section in volume 2. Short biographies, collected under the headings: Invention; Manufacture; Commerce; Finance; Transportation; Labor; Public Life; Education and Literature; Art; Amusement; Philanthropy; Divinity; Canadians. The subjects of the biographies include: Thomas Alva Edison, Andrew Carnegie, Marshall Field, John Wanamaker, Sir Thomas Lipton, Cornelius Vanderbilt, Lyman Judson Gage, Samuel Gompers, Theodore Roosevelt, Jacob Gould Schurman, Ella Wheeler Wilcox, Lew Wallace, Frederic Remington, Charles Dana Gibson, John Philip Sousa, Helen Keller, John Burroughs, Nathan Straus, Robert Laird Borden, Goldwin Smith, Sir William C. Van Horne, etc., etc. Volume 1 has light browning on pages 338/339 at gutter due to laid-in piece of paper. Both volumes have light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine, tiny bump at bottom corners of boards (volume 1 has a tiny bump at one top corner), a few small light rub marks, very light browning to fore-edge and bottom of text block - volume 2 has small foxing mark on fore-edge.
