Four volumes, bevelled boards covered in blue cloth with gilt/black/blue lettering and decoration on spines and front boards. Brown endpapers to volumes I & II, white to volumes III & IV. Tissue-covered b&w portrait frontispiece in each volume. Pagination runs consecutively through the set - 1197 pages in total, plus publisher's advertising. Publication began in 1880 and concluded with volume IV in 1883. Contents - Volume I: The Scots at Home (The Land and the People / Early History / The War of Independence / Religion in Scotland - The Reformation and the Covenant / The Highlanders and Jacobitism / The Women and the Homes of Scotland / General Summary); The Scot Across the Sea (Abroad / Early Conquest and Colonization / British Rule after the Conquest). Volume II: The Scot in Public Life (The War of 1812 / Colonial Government down to 1791 / Constitutional Rule prior to 1812 / From 1815 to 1841 / Canada from 1840 to 1867). Volume III: The Scot in Public Life, continued (The Maritime Provinces from 1837 to 1867 / The Dominion from 1867 to 1882); The Scot in Professional Life (Universities and Colleges / The Churches / The Legal Profession). Volume IV: The Scot in the North-West (The Country and its early History / British Fur-hunting, and Settlement / The Rival Companies and Lord Selkirk / The Company and Colonization / The Canadian Pacific Railway / The Influx of Settlement / British Columbia / Journalism and Literature / Addenda). The books bear contemporary ownership blindstamps/signatures/dates of the Hume family of Galt. Some light rubbing/wear to edges, corners of boards and top/bottom of spine; light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine; wrinkling/rubbing to endpapers of the first two volumes; very light toning to edges of textblock - a little more on bottom; a few minor marks to text, but overall a clean, tight, handsome set, protected by removable stiff mylar jackets.
