314 pp, 10 3/8" H. Dark blue cloth spine with gilt lettering, decorated paper-covered boards (dragon and lion motif), map endpapers. "Illustrated with watercolour sketches made during the embassy by William Alexander." Slipcase decorated with reproduction of "a view of the city wall of Poan-gin with vessels of various kinds lying under it, 4 November 1792". "The text of Lord Macartney's journal is reprinted from 'An Embassy to China', edited by J.L. Cranmer-Byng, first published by Longmans in 1962. For the present edition, (his) extensive annotation and appendices accompanying the journal have been abridged, and a few other minor emendations made." Contents: Introduction; Editorial Note; Members of the Embassy; A Journal of the Embassy to China; Lord Macartney's Observations Upon China; Appendices: An Edict from the Emperor Ch'ien-lung to King George III; Biographical Notes on Lord Macartney and William Alexander; Notes; Index.
