262 pp, 9 1/4" H. Map endpapers, b&w photographs, maps, reproductions. "John A. McDougall left his Ontario home in 1873 to seek his fortune in the West, first as a fur trader on the Fort Carlton Trail, and then for some fifty years as a merchant in Edmonton (population forty when he first arrived there in 1879). During his lifetime he saw the Indians signing their lands over to the Crown; watched the hamlet of Edmonton by-passed by the railroad and later cut off for weeks by hostile Indians during the second Riel Rebellion. He experienced the Edmonton boom when the Klondike rush began and the decline resulting from the gradual abandonment of the overland route to the Yukon. A long hard climb to prosperity followed. (This book) throws new light on an important section of Canadian history and illustrates the magnitude of the changes that have taken place in the West in the past hundred years." Very light browning to spine and to edges of boards. Dust jacket has several edge tears archivally taped, a few small scuffs/rub marks, very light fading on spine/hinges, some light soiling on hinges, very small closed tear on front hinge.
