"Antony Alpers has tried to discard all preconceived ideas and re-enter the world of the Polynesians as it was before Cook's arrival in 1769. By reconstructing their legends, myths, folktales and poetry in an immediate and convincing style he has let them speak for themselves. And in a long introduction that is a masterly compression of the Polynesians' whole way of life he cuts away our illusions and leaves us not only face to face with the islanders but with the way they saw themselves and the jewelled archipelagos in which they lived and sailed." Contains a preface, introduction and note on pronunciation and spelling, followed by groups of legends under the following headings: The Creation; The Heroes; Seven Ages in Thirteen Chants; The Marquesas, and Mangareva; Easter Island; Hawaiian Islands; Tongan Group; Samoa; Atolls and Outliers; New Zealand and the Chathams; 'From Darkness to Light'. These are followed by 'Notes on the Text and Illustrations', 'References' and 'Glossary and Index'. Very light edge wear, light wrinkling at top/bottom of spine. Dust jacket has been price-clipped, has slight edge browning, light edge wear/wrinkling - mainly at top/bottom of spine, one small edge tear.
