29 pp, oblong hardcover (7 1/4" H x 10 1/8" D) in pictorial glazed boards - no dust jacket (as published for the English first edition). ISBN 0233978798 John Goodall, whose illustrations are familiar to readers of the Miss Read stories, presents a 'story without words'. He takes us through the evolution of an English castle from the moment the Normans paused to select a site, through the English Civil War and its near destruction, to its reconstruction and enlargement during Georgian times and its height of elegance in the Edwardian era, until the 1970s, when the owners open its doors to raise money for its maintenance. In between all but the final double pages, lies a half page that when 'flipped' revals further aspects of castle l i fe. The colour illustrations are unmarred by text, but there is a single page describing the scenes at the beginning of the book. A book which invites readers to let their imagination roam! A few tiny light foxing marks at top edge of copyright a nd index pages, minor rubbing to glossy boards. Very Good+
