171 pp, 8vo (8 11/16" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w plates. "Many artists have felt impelled to write autobiographies, or to keep journals. Maurice Vlaminck, the French painter of Flemish origin, was no exception. He was an outstandingly un usual character, even at a time when the artistic world of Paris was filled with unusual characters. In this book of reminiscences he reveals himself to have been a man of singular honesty, integrity and vision. It is indeed a rare delight to fin d the painter of sensuous and dramatic landscapes capable of writing such highly imaginative and unconventional prose. He tells of his early youth when he was a violinist and professional cyclist, and then how almost by accident he came to be a pa in ter. With Andre Derain he started the Fauve school in search of a more sensuous and naturalistic approach to art. He was not a great admirer of Picasso but he loved Modigliani both as a man and a painter, and many of his views on people and eve nts will no doubt be regarded as controversial, though no less interesting for all that. He describes, too, with great vividness, his experiences as a conscript and, later, his war time service in 1914-18. The book continues with his descriptions of his life as a painter and his attitude towards his art, all interspresed with penetrating portraits of the simple men and women with whom he came into contact....throws a completely new light on Vlaminck, and on painters of the Parisian school i n ge neral." Very light browning to pages, light browning on endpapers, browning to edges of textblock, light edge wear. Dust jacket has has very small chips and tears - mainly at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, ight edge wear/wrinkling, light soil ing/rubbing - mainly on rear panel, light edge browning. Very Good-/Good+
