THE MUSEUMS OF PARIS. GREAT GALLERIES SERIES.

Author Name    Charmet, Raymond. Translated by James Brockway.

Title   THE MUSEUMS OF PARIS. GREAT GALLERIES SERIES.

Publisher    Olbourne, London, 1968.

Seller ID   20304

155 pp, small 4to (10 3/4" H), hard cover in dust jacket. Profusely illustrated in b&w and colour. "The Louvre is by no means the only museum in Paris worthy of attention. All the arts in their diversity are represented in thirty museums, smaller but of equal importance, whose buildings alone are of architectural interest....The Musee de Jeu de Paume, the sanctuary of Impressionist paintings, acts as a complement to the Louvre. The National Museum of Modern Art is remarkable in that i t s c o llection is in a constant state of flux, the artist's works being relinquished upon the hundredth anniversary of his birth. It embraces the Nabi movement, the Cubists, and the 'Paris School' of twentieth century art. In contrast, the acti vi ti e s an d creative output of primitive civilisations of Africa, Asia, Europe, U.S.S.R., and Arctic regions are demonstrated in the Museum of Man, while in the prehistoric section we may witness the evolution of man. Other museums furnish examp les of A si ati c art, the archaeology of China, and contemporary Chinese painting. Small objets d'art going back to the sixteenth century can be found in the Medals Room at the National Library, and the Historical museums cover life at all level s of soc iet y a nd p ublic events. This comprehensive coverage of art treasures is completed by the temporary exhibitions held in the Museum of Popular Arts and Trades which embraces most facets of interest - homes, costumes, musical instruments, tool s, ho bbie s, b elief s, as well as War and Maritime records." Light browning to pages and endpapers, very faint cigarette odor, light browning to edges of textblock, a few tiny dints to bottom edge of boards. Dust jacket has light edge wear /wrink ling, taped 1" t ear wi th creases and small hole at top of rear panel, two small closed tears - one with crease at top of front panel, browning on inside surface.
