87 pp, 8vo (8 5/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations. A fictionalized account of the boyhood of Salem woodcarver and architect Samuel McIntire (b.1757). "Samuel thrilled to the familiar sights of his home town. He loved to study t he strangely shaped roofs of the houses, examine the carvings which decorated the houses and the ships, and work with the soft wood himself to try to fashion what he saw around him. He longed to give all his time to this work he loved, bu t h e k n e w that life on the sea would be a more prosperous one, and he did not want to disappoint his family. An unexpected turn of events was to start Samuel on his way toward the career in which he distinguished himself. In this glimpse of t h e ea r ly l if e o f the famous architect Samuel McIntire, the author has drawn an inviting picture of what it was like to be a boy in Old Salem." Very light browning to endpapers, gift inscription on front pastedown, previous owner's small s tam p on fr ee fr ont en dp ap er, slight fading to spine and edges of boards, light browning to edges of textblock, minor rubbing, tiny dint on top of textblock, very small stain on fore-edge of textblock, light wrinkling at top/bottom of textbl ock. Dus t ja cke t is pri ce-c lip ped , has chips small chips and tears at top/bottom of spine and flap-folds, a few small edge tears with creases, very small hole/tear on spine, moderate edge wear/wrinkling, slight darkening to flap-folds, a fe w sma l l li ght s tain s and soil ing o n re ar p anel, light rubbing.
