Profusely illustrated in b&w with tables, formulae, drawings - 38 plates (some fold-out) (collated) - diagrams, graphs, drawings. Contents : Reconnaissance - Fording; Crossing on ice; Boats, rafts or flying bridges; Bridging. Nature and Measurement of Gaps to be Bridged - Classification of bridges; Parts common to all bridges; Camber; Ruling dimensions. Loads on Military Bridges and Stresses Produced Thereby: General case of loads on a supported beam. Materials: Timber; Iron and steel; Cordage, wire rope and chain; Knots and splicing; Iron and steel wire rope; Chain; Joints and fastenings; Graphical determination of section modulus; Regulations for testing spars, ropes and cordage; Central test loads for spars; Ropes and cordage; Test loads for steel wire rope; Test loads for hemp cordage. Accessories required for bridging operations: Use of spars. Organization of working parties. Interior - previous owners name on title page and contents page, one or two plates with tiny light foxing marks, slight "perfumey" odor, pages 53-57 and pages 76/77 have small colored pencil check marks in margins, pages 53 /54 are wr inkled and creased at top corner, plate IX has light browning and creases at top corner, book slightly cracked at plate XI, pages very light browned in margins, otherwise clean. Exterior - previous owners name and date on fore-edge of textblock, book is cocked, large soft crease at rear bottom corner, moderate rubbing/edge wear, small bump on spine edge, discoloration and soiling on covers and spine, browning to edges of textblock. Good reference copy.
