 7. Rowse, A.L., edited, with introduction and commentary by. (William Shakespeare.)  SHAKESPEARE'S SONNETS.
Harper & Row, New York, 1964, first American edition.
319 pp, large 8vo (9 3/8" H), hard cover in dust jacket. B&w frontispiece. "In this new edition of the 'Sonnets', Dr. Rowse sets forth his conclusions - and the reasons for them - on such long-disputed questions as the dating of the Sonnets, the identity of Mr. W.H. and of the rival poet, and the nature of the two loves with which the poems are concerned. He then presents the Sonnets themselves in the best text he has been able to arrive at, based on the original though in modern spelling and punctuation. Each sonnet is followed by a prose paraphrase and by a commentary. Sometimes the commentary occupies only a few lines; in other cases it is much longer and includes such information about contemporary events as is essential for an understanding of the text. The reader more or less acquainted with Shakespeare's plays but unfamiliar with the Sonnets will find this volume the ideal introduction to their beauty, pasion and pain. And for the students hitherto balked by usages or references which have refused to yield up their meaning, Dr. Rowse's exposition and editorial notes make his edition invaluable." Tiny speck on top of textblock, very minor edge rubbing, minor wrinkling at top of spine, faint watermark at bottom edge of rear board. Dust jacket is price clipped, has several small closed tears that are taped, a few tiny chips, light to moderate rubbing/soiling on rear panel, light to moderate edge rubbing, light rubbing on front panel, light watermark at bottom of rear panel.
