| 2. | Hyde, H. Montgomery, ed. with introduction by. (Oscar Wilde.) Foreward by Rt. Hon. Sir Travers Hurmphreys, P.C. THE THREE TRIALS OF OSCAR WILDE. University Books, New York, (1956), Ist U.S. edition. 384 pp, 8vo, hard cover in dust jacket. B&w illustrations, including reproductions of pictures by 'Spy'. ''In the first trial, Oscar Wilde brought an action for criminal libel against the Marquess of Queensberry, who had objected to his son's assoc iation with Wilde. The pugnacious peer so defended himself that evidence was brought forth resulting in the arrest of Wilde under a Criminal Law Amendment Act newly passed amid increasing concern at the spread of homosexuality in the educated class es. In the second trial, Wilde was jointly charged with a notorious character, Alfred Taylor. Literary genius had appeared in the dock on more than one occasion but seldom on a charge of sodomy. In the witness box, Wilde fully lived up to his rep utation as a wit and some of his best dialogue is to be found in these proceedings. The jury failed to agree. In the third trial, Wilde was retried separately, the jury did agree and Wilde was sentenced to two years' imprisonment. Sir Travers Hum prheys, Wilde's junior counsel in all three trials, has contributed his interesting personal recollections in a foreword. H. Montogmery Hyde, the editor, has written a most comprehensive introduction and has included six instructive appendices of i nformation of special interest to lawyers, doctors and psychoanalysts.''
